Weights pressed down on Tori's eyelids. Her head ached. She examined her tender lips with her tongue. Swollen. Split. A moan escaped her. What happened?

She strained to open her eyes until one lid lifted. The other wouldn't budge. All she saw was a sideways view of the living room from her reclining position on the couch.

Oh yeah. Now she remembered.

She wiggled her fingers and toes to make sure she still could, then raised her hand to her face. Gingerly, she touched her eye and gasped. A massive, throbbing bulge.

How had she ended up like this—just like her mother—beaten and bruised?

Someone pounded at the door. She sat upright. Had he left? If so, was he back? Was he still mad? Her gaze darted to the back door. Could she escape? Or would he only catch up with her and punish her more?

Besides, where would she go? She hadn't bothered to get to know her neighbors in tiny Aubrey, Texas. The only person she knew was her boss. And her boss was at work where Tori was supposed to be. She covered her face with her hands.

"Tori, I know you're in there," Jenna Steele, her boss, called. "Your car's in the drive and I can see your purse through the window."

Okay, so her boss wasn't at work. What time was it?

Still daylight, but dimming. It had to be after the store closed. Jenna must be on her way home.

She held her breath. Russ must have left. Or passed out.

Please go away. Jenna—the paragon of virtue—couldn't see her like this. And what if Russ woke up or came back? She couldn't let him hurt Jenna—the only person who hadn't given up on her.

Other than Aunt Loretta.

"Just a minute." Head pounding, she got to her feet. A wave of nausea hit her followed by swimming vision in her good eye. Clutching a bookshelf, she waited until it passed and shuffled toward the door.

"I'm fine, Jenna, just sick. I don't want you to catch it. I'm sorry I didn't call in this morning."

"I'm not leaving until you open the door. We need to talk and if you're that sick, you might need to see your doctor. It is flu season."

Even though Jenna was probably miffed with her for missing so much work lately, concern tinged her voice. If Tori didn't answer, Jenna was likely to call the Texas Rangers, especially since her cousin was married to one.

But if Tori answered, Jenna might still call the Texas Rangers. Either way, she was toast.

"You have to promise me you won't call the police."

Silence for a moment. "Why would I call the police? Tori, you're scaring me."

"You have to promise. It will only make things worse if the police get involved."

"I don't see how that can be, but I promise."

Tori unlocked the door and swung it open.

Horror flashed in Jenna's contorted expression. Her hand flew to her mouth. "Who did this to you?"

Tori shook her head. Pain knifed through her head and she swayed.

"Sit down." Jenna took her arm, led her to the couch and headed to the kitchen.

Cabinet doors and drawers squeaked open and slammed shut. Ice clinked in a glass. Jenna was back a few minutes later.

Something cold touched Tori's swollen eye and she winced.

"Sorry. Should have warned you."

Her good eye singed and a tear slipped past her lashes.

"Is it possible whoever did this will come back?"

A sob escaped as Tori nodded.

"Then, let's get out of here."

"Where?" Tori bit the inside of her lip until she tasted blood. "I don't want Aunt Loretta involved in this. I don't have anywhere else to go."

"I do." Jenna helped Tori up.

"I can't go with you. He'll come after me. I've tried to break it off with him before." This morning to be exact. Maybe the day after Valentine's hadn't been the best plan. But she'd thought if she broke it off this morning when she was expected at work, he wouldn't hit her. Wrong.

"I live on a private ranch with five houses, an electronic gate with a top secret password and an alarm system. If he comes after you, we'll know it before he figures out which house you're in. And we have our very own Texas Ranger less than a mile away."

Tori blew out a breath. "I don't want to involve you."

"I'm already involved." Jenna moved the ice pack. "Go grab some clothes. We'll come back later and get the rest."

Obviously, Jenna wasn't going anywhere without her. If they didn't get moving, Russ would come back. And hurt Jenna too.

Brant McConnell punched in the code his friend, Gar-rett Steele had given him and rubbed a hand across bleary eyes. Past midnight. He'd be glad in the morning with the short drive to church.

The iron gate slid open and Brant drove through—for seemingly endless miles before he saw a road that turned to the right. He took the road and drove more endless miles. Trees lined the fence along each side of the drive and the dark shapes of horses dotted the miles of pasture-land. Some spread, Garrett.

Nine years ago, they'd both tried to catch a break in the Christian music industry in Nashville. Brant had given up after a year and come back home, while Garrett hit it big in Country music. But Garrett's life had spun out of control.

If he'd stayed in the music industry, would Brant have strayed from God, too? He'd bided his time as the song leader at his church. Until Garrett called a few months ago.

With his life straightened out, Garrett had headlined at Cowtown Coliseum opening the Fort Worth Stockyards Championship Rodeo for two months. And paved the way for Brant to follow in his footsteps. As if everything were falling into place with divine purpose, Garrett's church also needed a song director. Surely his big break at a mega-church would be just around the arena.

Finally, Brant caught a glimpse of a darkened house with a green metal roof. He pulled in the drive, parked and opened his door. An owl hooted a greeting, then quieted as a pack of coyotes yapped in the distance. Oh, the sounds of the country—always made him feel right at home. He slung his guitar over his shoulder, grabbed his overnight bag and elbowed the door shut.

The rustic porch with pine posts and a swing invited him to sit a spell. As the chorus of coyotes moved out of earshot he imagined having coffee there in the morning.

Silence measured in seconds. The brave owl tentatively hooted as Brant made his way to the door. The key Garrett had given him at church clicked in the lock. He pushed the door open and flipped on the light.

White stucco walls, an Austin stone fireplace, with log beams lining the ceiling. Rustic hardwood floors and leather furnishings. Nice crib. And this was only the guesthouse. Brant set his gear down and headed down the hall.

A darkened room to his right. The bedroom? He stopped in the doorway and ran his hand over the wall to find the switch. A floorboard creaked. He stiffened. Someone lurked in the shadows.

"Don't move," a female voice ordered.

"I'm not here to hurt anyone." His finger grazed the light switch and he flipped it on.

"I mean it." Some of the confidence in her tone wavered as light flooded the room. "I'll brain you right out of Texas."

A small strawberry blonde wielded a fire poker poised to strike. And she was sporting one humdinger of a black eye. Lord, help.

She didn't say anything, but started to cry.

He slipped his hands up in surrender. "I'm Brant McConnell, a friend of Garrett's. We were roommates in Nashville."

"What are you doing here?" Despite her weapon, her voice cracked.

"Garrett said I could crash here so I wouldn't have to drive so far to church in the morning."

"From Nashville." Sarcasm dripped from her words.

"I live in Fort Worth now." He backed away from her. "I won't hurt you. I promise. I'll just go back to my truck, and call Garrett. There must have been some mix-up. Obviously, I'm at the wrong house."

He backed out of the room, scooped up his guitar and overnight bag, and headed for the door. From the looks of her, she might come after him.

Who'd given her the shiner? It certainly hadn't been a cabinet door. Could have been a bar fight with another woman. But it looked like more than the average woman's strength could inflict. And she was too tiny to be the brawler type. Probably some jerk Brant would like to get his hands on. His gut twisted. He didn't cotton to a man laying a finger on a woman. Much less a fist.

What now? He didn't even know where Garrett's house was on the property and it was too late to show up on his doorstep anyway.

Drive back to Fort Worth? Should have stayed there. The encounter had jarred him awake, but how long would the adrenalin last? He needed to at least get away from the house so the battered redhead could relax. He started the truck, backed out of the drive and turned toward the gate, hating to think of her alone—crying.

A mile or so down the road, he pulled to the side. Wouldn't be the first time he slept in his truck.

He slumped down and tried to get comfortable. Could sleep in the pickup bed, but it'd get awful hard and chilly before morning.

Lights illuminated his cab from behind. He turned around as another truck approached.

Please not the redhead coming to clobber him with her poker.

The truck stopped beside him. He rolled his window down as a man got out. "Brant?" Garrett called.

"Hey." Brant covered a yawn. "I didn't mean to wake up the whole neighborhood. I was gonna sleep here."

"No way. Sorry about the houseguest. She just arrived today and I didn't even think about you coming in tonight since you've never taken me up on my offer before."

"I should have called, but I didn't decide until after the rodeo. By then it was late."

"Turn around here and you can follow me to the house."

"I don't want to disturb Jenna. I'll get a hotel in Denton."

"Nonsense, you're staying with us. Besides, Jenna's with Tori, the houseguest. She called to see if you were for real and since she was upset, Jenna went over." Gar-rett got back in his truck.

Brant backed his pickup around and followed Garrett back down the tree-lined drive. What was the houseguest's story?

She was a beauty—even with the shiner. What could possess a man to hit a defenseless woman? His chest boiled.

Garrett stayed straight instead of turning right toward the guesthouse and Brant followed. What seemed like countless miles later, Garrett's brake lights came on. Their headlights illuminated the sprawling Spanish style stucco house with a red clay roof. Some house.

Brant parked, got out and unloaded his guitar and overnight bag again. "Sorry I scared your houseguest. She was crying when I left. Waving a fire poker at me, but crying."

"Jenna will probably stay with her."

"What's her story?"

"She's an interior designer—works at the Fort Worth store for Jenna." Garrett shrugged. "I don't really know her story—other than she's not a Christian and if not for her, Jenna and I might not be together."

"How's that?"

"Tori dragged Jenna to my concert that started it all." Garrett headed for the house and Brant followed. "Any idea who hit her?"

"She hasn't told us yet. She's called in sick a lot lately, including today, so Jenna stopped by her place after work. Seems she's in an abusive relationship. Jenna managed to get her to stay here at least for the night and she promised to go to church with us once her face heals up. So be praying for her."

"I will." He already had. The moment he'd seen her eye.

Wednesday. Five days since the beating and with a ton of makeup to cover the bruising, Tori had made it to work for two days in a row now. She moved a bronze Texas long-horn statue to the center of the window display to catch the light better.

She'd let Jenna down so much lately, but that was over. Russ was out of her life, didn't even know where she was. The only problem, she'd have to go back to her rental house eventually. She couldn't stay in Jenna's guesthouse indefinitely. And when she did go home, would he show up?

Tori shivered. A distant memory flashed through her mind—her mom slamming into the wall. Her dad going after her again, stopping as he saw Tori peeping through her cracked-open bedroom door.

"What are you looking at, you little tramp?" he barked.

She shut the door and slid to the floor, her hands clamped over her ears. Until the noise stopped. He'd left or passed out—she couldn't remember which—and she'd tended her mom's wounds like she always did.

That was the last beating. The next day when she came home from school, she'd found her mom in the tub with her wrists slashed. Wounds she couldn't tend. Tori was just fifteen.

"I'll be in the office." Jenna touched her arm, jerking her back to the present. "Let me know if it gets busy again."

"Sure." Tori forced a smile.

"You okay?"

"Fine."

"You can't even see it anymore. Does it still hurt?"

"It's just bruised now."

"We'll get you through this." Jenna squeezed her elbow and turned toward the storeroom.

Tori's vision blurred. Jenna had been so good to her. And gotten nothing in return but grief.

How had she ended up with Russ? A man so much like her father.

For the first time all day, the store had slowed. She picked up the feather duster and swished it over dozens of lamps, sculptures and works of art.

The bell dinged and she turned.

A massive man wearing a ball cap filled the doorway.

Russ.

What a wonderful story! :)
By writer@heart
Rodeo Family is the fictional story of Brant and Tori, two main characters who are struggling.

Torn and tattered by a hard-knock life, Tori is reeling from an abusive romantic relationship with a man who used her as a punching bag. Needless to say, when she meets Brant, she's on guard because life has taught Tori that she cannot trust any man.

Brant is a good guy and it breaks his heart from the moment he meets Tori because he respects women and loves God. Therefore, any abused person is a problem for him, a problem that he wants to remedy. So when he sees the visible signs of abuse on Tori's face, Brant's heart not only breaks for Tori but he feels the instinct to protect her and prevent her from being hit again. He also wants to pummel the man who did this to Tori.

Author Shannon Taylor Vannatter does a delightful job of exploring the hearts of Brant and Tori, delving deep into their motivations and peeling back layers upon layers of characterization until the reader not only identifies with the hero and heroine's individual plights but the reader is compelled to keep turning the pages to find out what happens next.

Shannon's characters become close to the reader's heart so that by the time they reach the last page they feel like they've experienced life with these characters and while happy for the way it ends, the reader may wish they could continue the journey.

I'd love to read a sequel to Rodeo Family because it was that good! :)

A Wonderful Romance With A Crisis Of Faith
By katrina Epperson
Wow!!
A wonderful story. This author brings us a wonderful romance, but she also delves into the aspects of recovering from physical abuse. She brings us strong, well developed characters in Tori Eaton and Brant McConnell. This is not only a story about romance, but also about a person in a crisis with faith. The plot is fast paced and will keep the reader turning the pages. A good clean story. I like how the author reveals the emotional journey the character takes on her way to recovery. Even though this is a wonderful story it also includes a message that can be applied to our lives. I would recommend this book to anyone.

Seek God's Will
By Joan arning
Rodeo Family is a fun romance involving country music artists, rodeos, a worship leader and an abused woman. Tori’s past influences her life choices. Shannon Taylor Vannatter shows how asking God what His will is for our life and following His will can bring more happiness than we imagined. While this Heartsong Presents book is a quick read, it deals with abuse and adoption, I recommend this book to others!

I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion

The blast hit his body, a rush of hot air and shrapnel picking him up off his feet and hurling him through the air. The moment he hit the ground, Will's eyes snapped open—

His breath came in quick gasps and he blinked, looking around the room to get his bearings. He was home. He was safe. The explosion, so real and intense just a moment ago, had only been a dream. The same dream that returned every night.

Groaning softly, he threw his arm over his eyes and waited until his heart slowed to a normal rate. But someone was pounding loudly on the cabin door—that was the sound that had invaded his nightmare, the sound his brain had interpreted as an explosion.

Cursing, he got up and crossed the room, dressed only in his boxer shorts. He grabbed a T-shirt hanging on the back of a chair and tugged it over his head, ignoring the incessant throbbing in his head that never seemed to abate. Pulling open the door, he squinted against the afternoon light. How long had he slept? Two hours? Or an entire day? He'd lost track of time.

His sister, Elly, stood at the door of their grandfather's cabin, bundled up against the cold. Will turned away from the door, shivering as an icy wind whipped through the interior. "Either come in or shut the door," he muttered.

She followed him inside, slamming the door behind her. "You missed your doctor's appointment today," she said. "The clinic called me to find out where you were. Dammit, Will, I told you if you needed a ride, I'd come and get you. But you said J.T. was going to take you."

"He couldn't," Will said, crossing to the kitchen. He yanked open the fridge and pulled out a carton of orange juice, took a long drink, then closed his eyes. He'd laced the orange juice with vodka last night, and the alcohol spread a soothing warmth through his bloodstream. There were times in Afghanistan that he'd gone weeks without the taste of fresh fruit, and now all he had to do was open a refrigerator and there it was. "He got a job over in Bayfield."

"Get dressed," she said.

"I've already missed the appointment," he said. "It's too late."

Elly hitched her hands on her hips. "If you're not going to go to the doctor, then I'm going to bring the doctor to you."

Will froze, his hand gripping the carton until it collapsed. He placed it back in the fridge, then slowly turned. "If you bring her here, I will never forgive you," he said.

His younger sister had always been close to Olivia, but after the breakup, she'd been smart enough not to mention Olivia in emails or phone calls. Even so, Calumet was a small town and Olivia was a doctor. Everyone knew her. Hell, his old high school buddy J.T. had heard enough stories about her to fill him in on all the details of Dr. Olivia Eklund's life over the past nine years.

After Olivia had tossed him aside, she'd finished college and med school in record time. She'd married another doctor, but when he'd refused to move to the Upper Peninsula, she'd divorced him and returned to her hometown to set up her medical practice. She hadn't dated anyone in at least a year, but she had reconnected with some of her old high school friends. And she'd delivered J.T.'s son six months ago.

Will didn't want to care about Olivia; he tried not to be curious or imagine what she might look like now. But knowing that the one woman he could never have was living just a few miles away was more than he was able to deal with right now.

"And what if I did bring her out here? Maybe she could talk some sense into you." Elly brushed past him and grabbed the orange juice, taking a long drink. She winced. "Is there—"

"Yeah," he said. "It was New Year's Eve. I wanted to celebrate and I didn't have any champagne."

She shook her head and dumped the rest of the juice down the drain. "New Year's Eve was three nights ago. And you shouldn't be drinking." She spun around and grabbed him around the waist, giving him a fierce hug.

"I'm worried about you." She sighed softly. "You can't avoid her forever."

"And I can't erase the past nine years. We're different people, El. I'm not going to magically transform into the old Will the moment I talk to her. I know that's what you expect, that seeing her again will solve all my problems. But that's just some stupid romantic fantasy."

Elly sighed. "I'm sorry." She crossed the room and grabbed a shirt from the back of the sofa. "But you have to get out, Will. You can't stay cooped up here. You need fresh air and exercise. You look like death warmed over."

Will knew she was right. But the dull headache he had now could become agonizing at any moment. And he felt more comfortable alone and in the dark. "I am death warmed over," he joked.

Elly's eyes filled with tears. "Don't say that. You have no idea what we've gone through, wondering if we were going to get the visit, never knowing where you were or if you were safe."

Will cursed himself beneath his breath. Navigating the civilian world was impossible for him. A marine had to be emotionless, and he'd lived in that bubble for so long that now he had no idea how to relate to people anymore, not even his sister. "I'm sorry," he said.

Jesus, how many times had he muttered those words since he'd been back? It was so much easier to isolate himself and avoid these kinds of missteps. Bombs were easier to defuse than human emotions.

"I just need a little more time," he said. "It's hard to adjust to being home. Hell, I'm not sure it's even worth trying to adjust. As soon as I'm clear, I'll head back to my unit."

"Why can't you be done? Just stop. Now."

"It's what I do," he said. "I'm good at it."

"You could be good at other things," she said.

Will knew that wasn't true. This past month had been enough to prove that civilian life wasn't for him. And though his future in the military was still in doubt, he had every intention of finishing his tour and signing up for another.

He'd always wanted to be a marine. His father had been a marine, and his grandfather had been a submariner in the US Navy. Will had grown up with the stories about WWII and Vietnam, about honor and glory and serving with courage. Will had felt compelled to honor the family tradition.

His mother and sister had wanted him to wait to get his college degree. And Olivia had never accepted his plans, assuming he'd change his mind at some point or she'd change it for him. She'd never understood how deeply the military was etched into his DNA and he'd never been able to explain it to her.

"I'm going to pick up the boys at school and take them to hockey," Elly said. "Jim is working late and we're going to meet him for pizza after practice. You could come with us."

In truth, all Will wanted to do was crawl back into bed and close his eyes. But Elly was right. He should at least make an attempt to socialize. After all, there was a possibility the doctors wouldn't clear him to return to his unit and somehow he'd have to figure out how to belong in the land of the living again. "Give me a minute to get dressed," he said, raking his hands through his hair.

Elly handed him the shirt and gave him a grateful smile. "Thank you," she whispered.

She waited for him in the rusty SUV while Will pulled himself together. It took him a while. Since the explosion, his brain had been scrambled and it took longer to sort out the steps in any task. The doctors had said it would become easier once the effects of the head trauma faded.

He spent five minutes searching for his sunglasses, then found them on the kitchen table, in plain view. He slipped them on as he stepped outside into the low afternoon light. Drawing a deep breath of crisp, clean air, Will paused to let his head clear before starting toward Elly's truck.

As they drove into town, a country song started blaring from the radio. Wincing, Will reached out to turn it off and Elly glanced over at him. "Are you all right?"

"It's just a little difficult to process noise," he said. "It makes my head hurt."

"I'm calling tomorrow to make another appointment for you at the VA. You were supposed to go when you arrived home and that was three weeks ago. You should—"

"They said it would take time," Will interrupted. "It's hardly been four months since the…accident. The doctors expect it to take at least twice that before I start to feel normal again."

"What if it doesn't get better?" Elly asked.

"Then I get a different MOS," he said. "There are a lot of things I can do in the corps."

"But not in Afghanistan?"

"I don't know," Will snapped, his irritation rising. He wasn't sure he could survive a life outside of active duty. In the past three weeks, he'd felt as if he was moving through mud, all his senses slowing until he could hardly breathe. He craved the adrenaline rush of his job, the chaos that surrounded him every day, the pulse-pounding excitement of his work.

His dad had always said he'd never felt more alive than when he'd faced death as a soldier. He'd told Will that every man needed to experience these deeply held fears before he could gain perspective on the rest of his life. Strange how it was the exact opposite for Will. He'd learned to feed on his fear, to use it like a drug to numb his body and his mind. He didn't feel alive. He was dead inside.

"You've got to find a new line of work," Elly said, an edge of sarcasm coloring her words.

They drove into Calumet and headed toward the school. But Elly pulled over in front of the post office, then grabbed a package from the rear seat of the SUV. "Could you run that in for me?" she asked, reaching for her purse. She held out a ten-dollar bill.

"What is it?" he asked.

"A swimsuit. It was supposed to be for our vacation to Mexico in March, but I look like the great white whale in it. I hate winter. I get so…plump."

"You've got to find a new place to live," he said.

Elly laughed. "I'm going to run and grab a couple bottles of Gatorade for the boys. I'll be back for you in five minutes."

Will got out of the truck and walked up the front steps of the post office. When he got inside there were two people in line in front of him and he waited patiently, hoping no one would recognize him. But his hopes were shattered when the first person in line turned to leave and looked straight at him.

The world seemed to grind to a halt around him as he met her gaze. He held his breath, hoping she'd walk right by, but she stopped.

A tiny gasp slipped from her lips. "Will?"

She didn't look anything like he'd thought she would. His memories of Olivia Eklund had been of a girl frozen at age twenty, young and fresh faced with copper hair and freckles across the bridge of her nose. She still had copper-colored hair, but it was now streaked with blond and fell in soft waves around her face.

"Liv," he murmured. The room felt as if it was tilted and he couldn't keep his balance. God, she was stunning. She was, and always would be, the most beautiful woman he'd ever known.

"I—I heard you were home," she said.

"Not for long," Will replied. "I'm headed back. Soon. Real soon."

"Oh," she said, forcing a smile. "Well."

"Yes," he said, his gaze drifting down to her lips. He remembered what it felt like to kiss those lips, to taste the sweet warmth of her mouth. He remembered the first time he'd kissed her, on her fifteenth birthday. Will fought the temptation to pull her into his arms and discover whether his memories were accurate. Instead, he balled his hands into tight fists. "You look…good."

Hell, she looked beautiful. Radiant. Gorgeous.

She smiled and shrugged. "You look…great." Liv drew a deep breath. "I—I should go. It was great seeing you again. Take care, all right?" She hurried to the door and he watched as she stepped out into the cold.

When he turned back around, he found the postal clerk and the other patron watching him. He recognized them both. The clerk was a girl who'd graduated the year before him in high school and the patron was his old English teacher, Mrs. Paulis.

"Awkward," Will said, forcing a smile. He spun and walked out of the lobby, Elly's package still tucked beneath his arm. He waited outside in the cold, pacing a short stretch of sidewalk until Elly pulled up.

When he got inside, he tossed the package onto her lap angrily. "Did you set that up? Did you know she'd be there?"

"Who? Why didn't you mail this?"

"Are you saying you had no idea she'd be there?"

"Kristina Olson?"

"No, Liv. Olivia was in the post office."

Her eyes went wide. "Of course I had no idea she'd be in there. Jeez, Will, it's a small town. You're going to run into people you know. Get over it."

"I've been over it for nearly ten years. And I don't need you messing with my life. Just leave it alone."

"Maybe you should stay holed up in that cabin. At least then you wouldn't subject the rest of us to your paranoid delusions." She grabbed the package and got out of the truck.

Will closed his eyes and leaned back in the seat, covering his eyes with his hand and cursing softly. All right, maybe this hadn't been some grand plan of Elly's to throw them back together. And maybe he'd acted like a first-class ass.

There was one thing he did know for sure: his heart was beating faster and his mind was suddenly sharp. He felt alive and aware for the first time since the explosion. And he suspected that it had everything to do with seeing Olivia again.

SEDUCING THE MARINE~
By Coffee Time Romance & More
Only another soldier can understand how hard it must be for someone like Will to face the uncertainty of a future without the only life he has known. His fear of failing is his biggest hurdle, and as much as Olivia hates the idea of him going back to war she cannot stand by and not help. It would be too easy to fault her for selfishness, yet Olivia never lets him give up. Even knowing how much it is going to hurt in the end. I like that Olivia and Will’s story is not all about a conquering alpha male, but more of a personal quest to find the man within the soldier.

The Heroine was selfish
By Mya
The heroine was annnoying, whiny and selfish. She was all about "me me me me". I liked the hero but the heroine was hard to root for. Olivia made no effort to get Will's perspective. All she cared about was herself, her career, her choices. It was as if Will was wrong to not have the same dreams as hers. I think the author tried but failed to make readers understand Olivia's POV. First it was explained that Olivia didnt want a life with him because she didnt want him to go to war and move from base to base, but then when the hero find a temporary job as Military recruiter in order to stay close to his hometown, she freaked out calling him every names for considering to take the job. She was like "I want you to say no. I dont want you to talk young men into enlist in the military". WTF. So in her mind, Will had to give up his dream and military career but it was unacceptable for her to do the same. She was egomaniac as well. Her ego made her believe that she was better than the hero because she was a doctor.
And I dont think the author realized that the heroine was trying the hero's life like her ex-husband supposedly tried to dictate her life during their marriage. Yet Somehow it was ok for Olivia to do the same to Will. Sorry but I thought that the ex-husband dodged a bullet.
At some point, I was rooting for Will to say "enough" and dump her for good and find a woman who will love him with his flaws and dreams without asking him to be someone else. The hero was way too kind with her.

Good reunion story.
By S. Frank
Will and Olivia had been high school sweethearts that continued into college. But partway through, Will decided to drop out of school and join the Marines. Olivia was heartbroken - she had had the future all planned out. She couldn't see any way for their dreams to be compatible, so she broke things off with him.

Will had always intended a career in the service and was heartbroken that Olivia couldn't support his dreams. Ever since then he has kept his emotions bottled up, knowing that they could be a deadly distraction on the job. This proves true on the seventh anniversary of their breakup when a moment of inattention has him setting off an IED. Once he's out of the hospital he's sent to his hometown for further recovery from his injuries. Will isn't handling it very well. He has nightmares, is uncomfortable in crowds or social situations, and is worried that he won't recover enough to go back to his unit. He's also worried about running into Olivia.

Olivia went on to become a doctor and has come home to practice. She has big dreams that she has started to make come true. Olivia has always regretted the way that she broke up with Will. As she got older she realized that she had been selfish and immature, both in her plans and her actions. and would like a chance to talk to Will and apologize.

Their first meeting doesn't go too well, as Will basically looks at her and runs away. The second doesn't go much better, except that Will gives in to the urge to kiss Olivia. It becomes obvious to both of them that, while their relationship may have ended long ago, something is still there. Neither thinks that there's any chance of a lasting relationship between them, but the attraction between them is hard to resist.

The relationship that developed between them was interesting. Both insisted to themselves that they could pursue a physical relationship without getting the heart involved, that at the end each of them can continue with their lives as they were before. However, things don't work out that way and the emotions do get involved. Will realizes he had never stopped loving Olivia, but with everything he's going through he's not sure he can trust what he's feeling. There are times when he thinks getting out of the Marines is the way to go, thereby enabling him to have a future with Olivia. But just the thought of leaving the life he knows for one with so many unknown variables scares him. Olivia comes to realize that she had never stopped loving Will either, but leaving the life she has, and all the things she had planned for it is something she doesn't think she can do.

I felt for Will with everything he was going through. If he doesn't fully recover from his injuries and has to leave the Marines, he doesn't know what he will do. He doesn't feel like he fits into this world any longer. He investigates some options but it's hard for him to embrace the unknown. The only thing that really calms his fears is being with Olivia. Meanwhile, I will admit to some frustration with Olivia. She feels she's learned from past mistakes, and regrets not supporting Will's dreams back then. But when he spends some time working with the local recruiters, she goes off on him for continuing his plans to go back to his unit. It seemed like she still didn't really understand who he is and what drives him. I was glad to see how they both finally faced their fears and realized that with some compromise they could have it all.

Delaney Blair stood at the window in the hospital conference room. Lightning flashed as raindrops battered the glass. The summer storm sweeping through Lubbock matched her mood. Two of her son's doctors sat at the table she'd vacated. They'd been discussing Nicko-las's prognosis, and it wasn't good.

Neal Avery, the pediatric oncologist who'd cared for Nickolas throughout his first illness, interrupted her chaotic thoughts. "Delaney, we've explored every avenue available to Nick at the moment. There simply are no marrow donor matches in the national donor bank. Nor have any emerged from the collection drives you and your friends ran."

Delaney rubbed at goose bumps on her arms and hunched her shoulders against the harsh reality of Dr. Avery's words.

Konrad Von Claus, a visiting pediatric oncologist and immunologist, chimed in. "I've gone over all of Nickolas's records from the leukemia he fought when he was eighteen months old. Like Dr. Avery and the others who treated him, I found no reason to suspect his remission wouldn't last. Regrettably, patients who fall out of remission require more aggressive measures." Switching gears, he said, "It's a fact ethnic minorities have difficulties finding matches. One reason is due to migration. Blood markers are inherited. Some families don't migrate together. And many people are from blended cultures. What about Nickolas's father, Ms. Blair? I don't see anyone named Sanchez listed among the people from your area donor drive."

Delaney turned from the window. "Dario Sanchez isn't relevant, Dr. Von Claus. He isn't now, and never has been in Nick's life. Dario lives in Argentina."

The visiting physician locked eyes with Delaney. "Hmm. I'd say he was a very crucial part of your son's life once, wouldn't you? We must face facts," he said a little more gently. "Among ten million people signed up to be bone marrow donors, less than ten percent are Latino. To complicate matters, Argentines are often of European descent. Their bloodlines are Spanish or Italian, but some have a mix of English, German, mestizo or indigenous. That essentially means Nick's chance for finding a match outside his family is well below the norm. We already know that you're not a match. For Nick's sake, you should ask his father and family to be tested."

Mouth twisted to one side, Delaney shook her head until her red curls danced. "I haven't seen Dario in over five years. Nick is four and a half. " She broke off and said, "Dario doesn't know he has a son. We met when my father, rest his soul, bought eight bulls from Estancia Sanchez. To make a long story short, my father died suddenly, the bank foreclosed on our ranch and forced Dario's family to take back their very expensive bulls and…the truth is he didn't care about me." Delaney's voice faltered again because the doctor didn't lower or soften his gaze. She threw up her hands. "You're right. This isn't about me or my feelings toward a man who promised to keep in touch but didn't. This is about saving Nick's life. I'd walk to hell and back for my son. I'll see if I can find a phone number for the estancia online."

Von Claus closed the medical chart and turned to his colleague. "You should go there and speak to Mr. Sanchez. Don't you agree, Neal? Facing someone makes it harder for them to decline. A phone call may make it too easy for a man you haven't spoken to in years, one unaware he's a dad, to simply cut you off."

Dr. Avery left his chair and took Delaney's icy hands. "Dr. Von Claus is right. Time isn't on our side. No man with half a backbone would refuse to help his own child. You need to see him and explain the whole problem. I know a trip will be costly, but I agree a physical meeting offers the best chance you and Nick have. You might also be able to obtain blood samples from his other relatives while you're there."

Delaney squared her shoulders. "The good people of La Mesa recently set up a fund for Nick and me. I could use that money to fly to Buenos Aires. But is it okay for me to leave Nick?"

Both doctors nodded. Neal Avery said, "Nickolas is here where he's getting the best care possible for his spiraling condition until a spot opens for him in Dr. Von Claus's study in San Antonio. We can arrange for Mr. Sanchez and his family to be tested at a hospital in Buenos Aires. Of course, if any of them are a match, that person will need to travel here for the harvest procedure."

"It makes no sense that I'm not the best match,"

Delaney said bitterly. "After all, I'm Nick's mother. It seems crazy to think strangers may provide what I can't. I carried him in my body for nine months." She fisted a hand against her belly for emphasis.

"I know," Dr. Avery sympathized.

"It is the best decision." Dr. Von Claus scooped up the thick folder. "It's good Dr. Avery suggested Nickolas for my study. There's much we have to learn about body cells relative to blood cancers. I've had cases where neither parent was a match, and yet we found a donor miles away with near perfect markers. If only storing a newborn's cord blood was a common practice, we wouldn't need this needle-in-a-haystack search."

"True. But who thinks when their baby is born, the picture of health, that any of this could happen? At the time, storing his cord blood seemed a needless expense. I hadn't built my practice yet, and I wasn't sure I could manage a baby and the long hours required to be a large animal veterinarian. Playing the if-only game won't make facing Nickolas's father easier."

"But you will go?"

"Yes," she said. The doctors said their goodbyes, and she turned back to stare out the window. Another flash of lightning cut jaggedly through an ugly sky. She stayed for an extra minute to settle her churning stomach before going to explain to Nick that she had to leave for a few days.

She finally headed to his room, trying not to worry about what she'd do if Dario refused to see her—or talk to her. And he might. She had fallen passionately in love with the dark-eyed, dark-haired Argentinian the summer after she'd aced her board exams and had been free of school for the first time in years. Back then, everything had been brighter, happier as she'd arrived home a brand-new vet. Dario and his crew had been in town delivering bulls and trying to make other contacts in Texas. If he hadn't disappeared a few weeks before her father's untimely death, their relationship might have been more than an eventful summer fling.

Too bad she had let her heart get involved.

Oh, what good did it do now to plow up old ground? She couldn't erase Dario from her mind even if she wanted to. Obviously the same wasn't true for him. He'd promised to keep in touch, then didn't. She was reminded of him daily, every time she looked at Nick. She only hoped Dario remembered her. It could be a death sentence for Nickolas if she was that forgettable.

Shaking off the gloom, she tiptoed into Nick's room on the pediatric cancer ward. His roommate had been discharged. The boy had been older, about seven, but the kids had been friendly. Today Nick looked small and alone in the too-big sterile room filled with monitors and medical trappings.

Breathing deep, Delaney bent over him and finger-combed the mop of dark curls off his pale forehead. His long lashes swept up, and he reached for her hand. "Mommy, where've you been?"

"Talking to Dr. Avery. Did you have a good lunch?"

Nick nodded. "But when can I go home? You and Miz Irene cook better," he said, referring to his longtime babysitter. "Here they always bring me bouncy red Jell-O." He crinkled his nose in a manner that acutely reminded Delaney of his father.

After Dario's disappearance, she'd made the choice to carry on alone. She had vowed her child would be a Blair. But when her beautiful baby boy was born with more of Dayo's features than hers, she'd made Blair his middle name and put Dario Sanchez as his father on his birth certificate. Her son didn't deserve to grow up with a blank spot in place of a dad. And mercy, weren't those Dario's big dark eyes imploring her now as she sat in the chair and leaned over to kiss Nick's lightly freckled nose, one of the few features he shared with her?

"Listen, my little cowboy, Mommy has to go out of town for a few days. You have to stay here so Dr. Avery can chase away that old fever that's made you feel so yucky."

His eyes glazed with tears, and he gripped her hand more tightly. "I don't like being here alone. Will Josh be back?"

Delaney stroked his hand. "Josh went home. I'll ask Nurse Pam if you'll be getting a new roommate soon. Okay?"

"Maybe Miz Irene can come be here while you're gone, like she does at our house."

"I wish she could, Nick. Unfortunately this hospital is too far away, and Irene still has to take care of Sara Beth so her mom can work. Dr. Avery needs you here, because they have the best medicine to make you better."

"I don't feel better. I'm real tired." He yawned as if to prove it.

"You take a nap, then. I don't have to go anywhere yet."

"When I wake up can I play a game on your 'puter?"

"You bet." Delaney dug his favorite stuffed cow out from under his covers and tucked his arm around it.

The toy had been given to him by Zoey Bannerman, the teenage daughter of a rancher Delaney worked for. Zoey's dad and stepmom had been so supportive throughout this latest ordeal of Nick's. All of the ranchers and townspeople in and around La Mesa, Texas had. Two neighboring vets were taking caring of her clients. The only thing the community hadn't been able to do was round up a bone marrow donor for Nick. And they'd tried.

She noticed his eyes had drifted closed and his fingers relaxed their hold on hers. She leaned back in the chair where she'd spent far too many hours. Firing up her laptop, she searched online for Estancia Sanchez. She hadn't visited their site in a while. Her palms began to sweat. Before, she'd been too busy making a living and building a home for her and Nick to spy on Dario—and that's what it felt like. Then their lives had been turned upside down when, at age one and a half, Nick had been diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia. Living with dread, she'd juggled her work around doctor visits and treatments. The day Nick had been pronounced in remission gave the entire community reason to celebrate. And their lives were good until a few months ago when his fevers and unexplained leg aches had come back with a vengeance.

Delaney wasn't surprised to see a huge array of bulls on the Sanchez website. Bulls were, after all, the family business. The family sold them for stud and as trained bucking animals for rodeos. Her father, once head of the Southern Area Cattlemen's Association, had become a rodeo stockman. Some of his friends claimed he'd done so because of the prolonged drought—one of many things he hadn't bothered to discuss with her.

Wiping away tears, she scrolled through the website. The Spanish-style Sanchez compound looked beautiful. According to the information, the owner was Arturo Sanchez and his sons Vicente, Dario and Lorenzo. So Dario hadn't left the family business, although there was no indication how recently the website had been updated.

Closing the browser tab showing an image of grass-covered knolls dotted with grazing bulls, Delaney moved on to book a round-trip airline ticket leaving Texas the next morning. She also booked a moderately priced hotel in Buenos Aires. The total put a serious amount on a credit card she saved for emergencies. But this was an emergency, she thought, her heart melting as she gazed at her sleeping son.

She'd closed her laptop when staff wheeled a new patient into Nick's room. Delaney spoke quietly with his mother. Henry Nakamura, nearer Nick's age, also needed marrow and had fewer possible matches in the national donor bank than did Nick. Delaney promised herself that when they got through this and Nickolas was on the mend, she would devote her spare time to educating people, especially those of mixed race, of the dire need to be tested, hopefully to improve the terrible statistics.

The next morning she stopped to see Nick before heading to the airport. Parting from him took a toll on her heart.

"We'll spend extra time with him while you're gone," Nick's favorite nurse assured Delaney. "You just concentrate on what you have to do to get our little cowboy a donor."

Tears clogged Delaney's throat. All she could do was nod and swallow hard during her final wave to Nick. Pulling herself together, she dredged up a smile. "I'll phone you every day," she managed to remind him, pointing to the prepaid cell phone she'd brought him.

"'Kay, Mommy."

His breakfast arrived. Luckily for Delaney, her last glimpse of him showed him chatting with Henry about food.

Delaney couldn't relax on the cab ride to the airport or after she checked in. She'd brought veterinary journals to read on the long journey, but once the plane took off, her mind kept wandering. She continually reworded what she would say to Dario when she saw him.

Over eleven hours later when the flight attendant told everyone to prepare for descent into Buenos Aires, a major worry suddenly hit Delaney: What if Dario was out of the country delivering bulls? Oh, why hadn't she phoned Dario? That had been her first inclination.

Dawn was breaking. She rented a small SUV and checked into her hotel. She had managed scant little sleep on the flight. And yet, because she was anxious to put the meeting behind her and get back to Nickolas, she decided to sponge off, change and drive straight to the estancia.

Though it was fall in Texas, it was spring here in Argentina, on the other side of the equator. Most of the clothes she had taken to Lubbock were for cooler weather. Pride, though, had her opting for the one sundress she'd packed. Grabbing a cardigan, she made a face at the drawn woman in the mirror. There was nothing she could do about the plethora of freckles she'd never liked, or the dark circles under her eyes.

Delaney stopped at the front desk to ask a clerk for directions to Estancia Sanchez. She had only the address from the website.

Taking out a map and pen, the clerk drew a line that meandered through the city and out into what looked to Delaney like countryside. "I didn't realize the ranch was so far from the hotel," she murmured.

"It's actually nearer San Rafael. Depending on traffic, you should reach the estate in a couple of hours. It's a beautiful drive. Estancia Sanchez is muy bonito. The owners are well respected," the clerk said.

"Oh, do you know the family?" Delaney asked.

"I know of them. Many people mourned a few years ago when the patriarch was badly injured in a car accident that killed his wife. His second wife," she added after glancing around and lowering her voice.

Delaney blanched. "I…oh, I had no idea."

The clerk broke off speaking as she reached for a phone that had started ringing.

Heart tugging
By S. Frank
Good book with some definite heart tugging going on. Delaney is the single mother of a little boy who is very ill. He needs a bone marrow transplant and they have been unable to find a match. Desperate, she heads for Argentina, to talk to her son's father and get his help. Unfortunately, she never told him she was pregnant and she isn't sure what his reaction will be. Dario is shocked by her arrival, and initially quite hostile. He and his family hold her father responsible for their business troubles and he doesn't even want to listen to her.

I felt for Delaney. She probably should't have kept her pregnancy secret, but her reasoning was understandable. She and Dario were separated by actions her father took that she was unaware of, and were made worse by her father's death shortly afterward. Dario also had family troubles that contributed to the problem. I liked the fact that she gathered her courage and went to face him with the news. After his reaction, she didn't expect his help and was surprised when he and his sister arrived in San Antonio. Delaney worried that he would make custody demands and was not very welcoming. She began to see how determined Dario was to be a father, and was moved by how good he was with Nickolas. She also realized that her feelings for Dario had never died, but she was afraid to believe that he would feel the same and stay in Texas.

Dario was stunned to see Delaney. All he can think of are the threats that her father made against him and his family and what came to pass. He had loved her and thought that she was a participant in what had happened. At first he doesn't believe what she tells him, but feels compelled to investigate. When he first meets Nickolas he can't deny that he's the father and is determined to be a part of his life. I really loved seeing him bond with Nickolas. Dario also had to stand strong against his family's attitude against Delaney. It doesn't take too long before he admits that he still has feelings for her.

Both of them had to deal with their feelings for each other and worries about the future at the same time they were dealing with Nickolas's health crisis. Though they had a rough start, I liked the way that they tried to put his needs first. Working together for Nick gave them a chance to get to know each other again. Because of the circumstances, there wasn't much of a chance for romancing between them, but the connection was there from the beginning and they were able to build on it. The ending was quite intense with an interesting twist to the bone marrow donation. I really liked Dario's solution to their future, and the epilogue was a satisfying followup.

I loved the character of Dario's sister Maria Sofia. She may have been only nineteen, but she knows what she wants and isn't afraid to go after it. I loved the way she helped Delaney at the beginning, and then came to Texas with Dario. It was so much fun to see her stand up against his and his father's old fashioned attitudes. I really liked her determination and what she did with it. I'd love to see a book with her when she gets a little older. I can see her running some guy ragged.

Faster Than A Speeding Bullet .....
By Amazon Customer
Well, this episode certainly moved the story along quickly. Fast paced with some resolutions (of sorts) to mysteries and romances. Characters were exposed to new and heightened dangers on a couple fronts.

This episode featured many of the characters and continued to develop their stories. The episode also continued to develop new questions, while not quickly revealing the answers .....

As with an earlier episode, the author set up several 'cliffhangers' in this episode that make me want to jump into episode nine as soon as possible.

There was humor and danger with scenes that leave the reader hangling ........dying cellphones, people entering a room unexpectedly, listening to other peoples' conversations ....all lead to increased tension ..........NICE WORK !!!

Somewhat prophetic considering what happened in Orlando. Very disturbing. I am starting to wonder if any of the bad people in the series will ever get what they deserve.

Nantucket Five-spot: A Henry Kennis Mystery (Henry Kennis Mysteries), by Steven Axelrod

Henry Kennis, Nantucket island’s poetry-writing police chief who will remind readers of Robert B. Parker’s Jesse Stone and Spenser, works a second challenging case in Nantucket Five-spot.
At the height of the summer tourist season, a threat to bomb the annual Boston Pops Concert could destroy the island’s economy, along with its cachet as a safe, if mostly summer-time, haven for America’s ruling class. The threat of terrorism brings The Department of Homeland Security to the island, along with prospects for a rekindled love affair―Henry’s lost love works for the DHS now.
The “terrorism” aspects of the attack prove to be a red herring. The truth lies much closer to home. At first suspicion falls on local carpenter Billy Delavane, but Henry investigates the case and proves that Billy is being framed. Then it turns out that Henry’s new suspect is also being framed―for the bizarre and almost undetectable crime of framing someone else. Every piece of evidence works three ways in the investigation of a crime rooted in betrayed friendship, in˜ delity, and the quiet poisonous feuds of small town life. Henry traces the origin of the attacks back almost twenty years and uncovers an obsessive revenge conspiracy that he must unravel―now alone, discredited and on the run―before further disaster strikes.

Review
Near the outset of Axelrod’s satisfying follow-up to 2014’s Nantucket Sawbuck, island police chief Henry “Hank” Kennis thinks a bomb threat―to blow up the summer Boston Pops concert, where political and business elite gather―is a teenage prank, so he’s surprised when Department of Homeland Security agents Jack Tornovitch, with whom he tangled on an earlier case, and Frances Tate, a romantic interest from that same case, arrive on Nantucket. Meanwhile, Zeke Beaumont, a former U.S. Army sergeant who served 10 years for drug dealing in Iraq, also comes to the island, to take vengeance on the military officer he blames for his incarceration. Hank’s knowledge of Nantucket and its residents pits him against Jack, who focuses only on local suspects. Suspense builds when Hank discovers a frame-up within a frame-up, and he races the clock to identify and stop the bomber. Despite a pasteboard villain and a far-fetched climax, Axelrod crafts an enjoyable, fast-paced read. (Publishers Weekly)

Those darned summer visitors are ruining it for the rest of us
By Lisa Ahlstedt
Chief Henry Kennis is attempting to keep his Nantucket Island community in order during the yearly influx of visitors during the summer. Unfortunately, a mad bomber is threatening to wipe out the rich and famous who congregate on the island for the 4th of July holiday. One bright spot is that the bomber's activities have gotten the attention of the FBI and Dept. of Homeland Security, who send agents to investigate, including Henry's old flame Franny Tate. Is it too late to rekindle their romance that started when they worked together in Los Angeles (where Franny is still based)? Henry hopes the answer is no as he woos Franny with dinners and evenings out. Unfortunately, Henry is also acquainted with Franny's partner, the obnoxious and overbearing Jack Tornovitch, who likes nothing better than blustering around while Franny does all the work (then taking all the credit). Tornovitch wastes no time in pointing the finger at several of Henry's friends and co-workers for the bomber's activities, even arresting assistant police chief Haden Krakauer and not allowing him contact with the outside world. In flashbacks, we are introduced to "Zeke," the bomber, who began plotting his revenge against superior officers who allowed him to take the fall for a drug-dealing ring that was operating while Zeke was stationed in the Middle East. Zeke obviously has taken on a new identity, but who is he? Could he be someone Henry has worked with for many years without suspecting his ulterior motives, or is he one of the influx of visitors to the island? Time is running as a big 4th of July fireworks show will gather everyone on the island together in an irresistible target for the bomber.

I enjoyed the suspenseful build-up of Henry and Franny trying franticly to unravel the identity of the bomber, while being obstructed at every turn by the obstinate and glowering Tornavitch. At the same time, I felt there were so many characters to keep track of that I had a hard time sorting them all out. When someone was mentioned, I had to flip back in the pages to figure out who that was. Still, the story moved quickly and I could sympathize with Henry, trying hard to keep his little piece of the world safe and orderly as it is threatened by forces beyond his control. I understand this is the second in the Henry Kennis mystery series, so if I go back and read the first one, it might be easier to sort out characters!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for this review.

Great read
By Terri Hoffman Curtis
I just finished reading Steven Axelrod's Nantucket Five-Spot and am trying to find a profound statement to sum up this roller-coaster ride of a read. All I can think of is "WOW". I'm exhausted due to Axelrod's talent that takes the reader right along with his characters on this crime-solving adventure.

Nantucket Five-Spot is the second book featuring Nantucket Police Chief Henry Kennis. In this story, Kennis must stop someone who is threatening to set off a bomb at Nantucket's Boston Pops concert. Axelrod reeled me along like a fish on a hook, making me think I had the criminal's identity figured out from the start, then surprising me in the end. He threw in so many red herrings, twists and turns that I still suspected another to appear right up until the last sentence.

This was my first Axelrod read. When I started reading, I was tempted to compare his main character to Jesse Stone, or Jessica Fletcher (yeah, I'm that old). As I progressed through the story, I realized Axelrod definitely has a unique style of his own, and to compare him to any other author would be a disservice to him and Chief Kennis.

My only complaint is with one chapter where the story turns to the point of view of a character who dies. That happens to be one of my pet peeves; dead people can't tell their story in first person unless it's a paranormal story. I won't name the character or chapter because I don't want to spoil the story for the next reader, but that character and entire chapter seemed contrived and unnecessary.

Characters from Axelrod's first Chief Kennis book are mentioned throughout this second story. That glimpse and Axelrod's writing style have me ready to read the first installment, and I look forward to more.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Complicated but interesting plot
By consumerinaz
Police chief on Nantucket dealing with bomb threat. Good. Complicated plots. Hero is so tolerant as to be unbelievable at times. Former love interest comes back into picture. Also an ex-wife and 2 children. Reader kept interested. I did guess main bad guy before it is announced.
