Interesting Story with a Social Message
By Nimi
With Shamsuddin's Grave, author Paromita Goswami has weaved an emotional story of struggle, in the backdrop of social ostracism in India, and the plight of supposed illegal refugees who have come from Bangladesh to India.
Latika and Snehlata are two gentle souls who are example of those who rise above the discriminations and unjustice of the society.
Snehlata has provided living quarters for Shamsuddin for years.
Latika is back to her hometown, Guwahati after having known the fast life of a metro city.
The story of a simple man, Samsuddin. He leaves his village, works hard, lives through difficult times, feels guilty if he is not faithful to his wife. He does it all to make a good life for his family.
Things do not turn out as he expects them to.
Shattered and disappointed, Shamsuddin still holds on to hope.
Shamsuddin's Grave's pace is a little slow in places. But I think it serves the important purpose of giving details of the place and its' culture.
The story of Shamsuddin's Grave is a multi-layered one. Besides the main characters, there are many other that leave an impact.
The author has written characters who touch your heart as you relate to their emotions.
Each one has their own story to tell. Paromita Goswami makes a strong statement about the society through this book and makes you ponder over the many wrongs which we are so used to that we take them in our stride.
Shamsuddin's Grave touches on many social problems, but does not preach about them. At least, not too obviously.
The ending of Shamsuddin's Grave was a surprise. It made me smile (a little sadly), even as it sent a chill down my spine.
Does luck favour the ones who already have luck on their side, I wonder...
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Interesting

WOWs!!
Plot: A wonderful plot involving the state of the homeless Miya Muslims of Bengali origin who are ‘foreigners’ in their own land and are deprived of even the barest necessities of life. Their agony at being denied even a decent roof over their head is portrayed well through the plight of Shamsuddin the protagonist. One can easily relate to their sufferings and humiliation.
The twist towards the end, is the masterstroke.
Characterization : The characters of Shamsuddin and Lathika are well etched with all their imperfections. While Shamsuddin reflects the weak and oppressed, Lathika stands for the strong headed modern day woman who does not shy away from calling a spade a spade. The two reflect the opposite sides of human nature.
Language: Language is simple and hence easy to read and understand.
OOPs!!
Storyline: Though the title and tagline hint to a story about a homeless i.e. Shamsuddin and his grave, in effect it turns out to be more a story of Lathika the social worker. Though the story started out with that of Shamsuddin the protagonist, somewhere down the line Lathika took over and overshadowed him. The story seemed to drift like a rudderless boat. It is then only towards the end that Shamsuddin surfaces again. Though the author had a very strong plot/prompt, I feel she fell short of taking full advantage of the same.
Editing: Flawed at many places. Apart from the typos, the usage of certain words seem out of place. To cite a few examples- Instead of using ‘after filling her thirst’ and ‘bear the bruise’ the author could consider usages like,‘after quenching her thirst’ and ‘bear the brunt’. They fit in better.
Style: Long, winding narratives in some portions took off the sheen from the story and made it burdensome. The number of pages could be cut down if only the author had not dwelt too much on certain portions that do not seem to have a bearing on the story/ do not contribute much to taking the story forward. E.g. – the scene at the tea stall in page 56 is too vivid. The whole thing would have left a better impression on the reader, if put across in just a sentence or two.

Good Read
By V. Pratap
Hats off to Paromita Goswami, author of Shamsudin’s Grave, for writing such a good novel.
This novel is different, it’s not a story of an MBA Guy, not a story of an engineer, not a story of high class of society, it’s about a daily wage labourer, his plight, his struggle, and a young lady Latika, who explores her different aspect of life along the story of Shamsuddin, and the story represents a real life story, not so perfect, just like real life, where we face different situations, different emotions.
Overall rating: 3.5/5
Language: simple, lucid and easy to read.
Story: Reality of life, critical storyline targeting different problems like emigrant problem, human trafficking, rape, flood, where different characters walks through different phases in their life.
Recommendation: A must read for book lovers.
Demerit: Needed some last minute proof reading for grammatical and spelling mistakes like on page no. – 145, 168, 246. Hope they will be corrected in next print.
