Review

“First-rate book. Win and Meredith are a super couple and fine writers.” ―Clive Cussler

“The ghosts of Mark Twain, Jack Kerouac, and Joseph Conrad haunt MOONLIGHT WATER, the latest in the long and honorable tradition of road stories, but with 21st century angst laid in. To this, the Blevins writing team has introduced the themes of spiritual awakening, personal redemption, love rekindled―and a thumping good detective story. How they managed to fit all this between two covers, and in such entertaining fashion, is the stuff and substance of great literature.” ―Loren D. Estleman

“A quirky and heartfelt story of a lost soul just trying to find some meaning in life. Aren't we all? The best part is the clear reverence for Navajo wisdom and the vast and wonderful desert from which it is born.” ―Michael and Kathleen Gear

“Moonlight Water takes the reader on the high road of adventure. Running from the rock & roll of an old life to the edge of the world & beyond. It's as old as time and as new as tomorrow. Love it.” ―Gil Bateman, exec at Elektra Records, co-founder, Wyndham Hill Records

“Moonlight Water is an engaging, spellbinding novel of life, love, courage and redemption.” ―Liberty Voice

Pot Hunters
By Sumner Wilson
Rob Macgregor suffers a huge blow to his ego, and even more to the sense of his own manhood. He arrives home, already tired of the "super rock star" life he leads, and receives the final blow to his self-worth when his business manager slaps him upside the head with the news that he has to vacate the house and give it to Rob's wife. Georgia, Rob's wife, loves the business manager, a woman. Rob has already lost one wife in a similar manner, although his first loss was to a male.

So instead of literally killing himself, after a great deal of inner debate, he fakes his own death through a boating accident. His friend, a successful lawyer is the only person other than Rob himself who knows what truly happened to the "rocker." Rob changes his name to Red Stuart, buys a van, equips it with a bed, and hits the road to find himself. By and by, he lands in Moonlight Water, a Navajo community in Utah. He takes a room at a home for the aged, called Harmony House, and his story unfolds from there.

He throws in with a beautiful Navajo maiden who works for the BLM. Zahnie is the beautiful maiden's name. She is the granddaughter of the one-hundred and three year old Navajo wise man, Winsonfred Manygoats. Winsonfred, has a pal, a vulture by the name of Ed, who in "reality" is the reincarnation of the famous writer, Edward Abbey. Ed, is Winsonfred's eye in the sky, and keeps Winsonfred abreast of what is happen in the surrounding red rock country.

Bad things indeed are happening among the cliffs and the ancient Anasazi ruins. Pot hunters! They're stealing all the goodies left over from that ancient, ghostly tribe, who disappeared from the surface of the earth many years ago. These goodies are worth big bucks, and wherever big bucks reside unsavory characters have a knack of congregating.

Zahnie takes Red Stuart for a river journey through what must be a gorgeous piece of land, what with the red bluffs, and clummies and whatnot to view as they slide on down the river. Eventually, we are introduced to the bad guy in the tale, a fellow named Kravin.

Without relating the entire adventure, we'll just say, that bad things happen to Red, Zahnie, and Zahnie's son, Damon, who by the way, is pretty much of a fine songwriter and singer himself. But with the help of Winsonfred Manygoats and Ed, the vulture, Red, Zahnie and Damon run down the mine shaft where the Kravin gang are hiding the stolen treasures. They take care of the bad guys, and Zahnie, Red and Damon, not to mention Winsonfred find themselves back in good graces with the law that had been hell-bent to toss them in jail. Harmony House is saved. Damon is on his way to becoming a great musician and best of all, Red and Zahnie (by this time in the tale, Zahnie is one-hundred percent pregnant) get married. Georgia, through a mental slippage, decides to give Red the old house, which is worth some bucks. In the end all is well and peaceful in the red-rock country.

I enjoyed Moonlight Water, and am all set to recommend it with a five-star rating.

Nourishing Adventure
By Alimojo
I'm a big fan of Meredith Blevin's story telling - she always manages to surprise, entertain and nourish me deeply with her words and so I knew before cracking the spine of this book I was in for a great read. Crazy wisdom rides between her lines so perfectly and in Moonlight Water even more so. Navajo elders assert their visions and knowledge. Against the backdrop of Utah high desert an adventurous story of love unfolds. Early in the book Blevins gives a sense of what is to come: "As he walked, he carried that knowledge in each step, and he knew it in his flesh. Felt it the way a man feels his desire to meld himself heart and soul with a particular woman. Knew...." Ahhh, sweet lines!
I felt a strong sense of place - the Utah landscape - and whats really cool is that through following the Blevins on Facebook I discovered their friend the photographer J.R. Lancaster who lives and works in Utah as well. While reading the book his photographs flashed through my mind's eye and I would often sign onto FB for a fresh look. (J.R. Lancaster was appointed by the Navajo Nation to photograph many of the sacred sites described in the book.) What a great and memorable experience this book was. Only one thing left to do: Visit Utah and see for myself. I love it when a book hits you like that. Two thumbs up.
