September 2001 - Two couples fight to learn the meaning of love, sacrifice, and living for today...before it's too late.
Wall Street investment banker Ian Brown and his eight months pregnant wife Stacy Gold live in a beautiful Brooklyn Heights brownstone on Willow Street. When Stacy gives up her publishing job to become a stay-at-home mom, she soon gets bored with sitting on the Promenade, sipping Starbucks. With time on her hands, Stacy begins to fear losing what little intimacy she and Ian have left, once the baby arrives.
Aspiring actor Mark Gray and his lover Paul Green have been living long-distance for the past six months. Mark keeps a studio on Willow Street while Paul works as a lawyer in Boston, near his sick mother. When Mark learns of Paul's mom's dying wish to see him marry her son, he is faced with the reality of finally coming out to his parents. With time running out, Mark soon discovers what committing himself fully to another person truly entails.
But with the clock ticking, will these two couples ever learn to compromise -- or will they keep putting things off for a day that may never come?

In September 2001, I was living in Brooklyn. I worked as a publicist at a commercial book publisher in Manhattan, while also pursuing a career as an actor. I had only recently written my first play, JOHN R, which was being readied for a workshop by an off-off Broadway Theatre company in which my partner, Craig Bentley, and I were members.
Craig, also an actor, had just begun his graduate studies at the Academy for Classical Acting at the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, DC -- a one-year MFA program then in its second year. We were now living apart, confident that our long time relationship could survive the long distance.
Approximately 2 weeks after Craig had moved down to DC, I woke up late on a beautiful Tuesday morning, rushed past the volunteers reminding us to vote in the primary election that day, and rode the F train to my Midtown office. Arriving 20 minutes tardy, I snuck into the building, took the elevator up to the eerily quiet 8th floor where, surprisingly, no one was to be seen. After grabbing a cup of coffee in the kitchen (no time for Starbucks!), I sat down at my desk and began my morning routine of checking voice mails and emails.
Maybe 15 minutes later, the ding! of my Yahoo Messenger alerted me to a message from my brother back in Michigan, asking if I was okay.
And thus it all began...

Emotionally gripping

Was fortunate enough to read this before it was published. Explores the differing dynamics of two couples whose lives overlap. This is a serious, funny, and poignant play. Not a light read, but a very satisfying read.
