"Jump's poignant page turner with a Southern-fried setting and a hint of Steel Magnolias is picture perfect." -- Romantic Times BookClub TOP PICK!

From the Author
I'm ridiculously excited to be writing for Special Edition and to be starting a whole new series with the hunky Barlow Brothers! I love connected books--love reading them, love writing them--and especially love writing about family dynamics in large, loving families. In THE HOMECOMING QUEEN GETS HER MAN, I introduce Jack Barlow, the hunky former military man with a secret to keep from his old girlfriend, former beauty queen Meri. I had so much fun bringing in his brother Luke, and introducing the Barlow family. Like all families, they are far from perfect, which is what makes them so fun to write about!

I have a large family myself--three brothers and a sister. It was never quiet in my house, and even as adults, when we all get together, we still have some of the same jokes and teasing as we had when we were kids. My dad is also former military (as is my husband) so I always feel a special affinity for military heroes.

This time, my hero suffered from PTSD, something I knew very little about. I called on Colonel (Retired) Keith Landry, PhD, who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan and knew a lot about the subject. He and his lovely wife Nia have been fans for a while--and even highlighted one of my older book titles in their wedding last year. So a huge thank you to him for reading passages and giving me feedback on those critical sections.

I hope you enjoy the first Barlow Brothers book!

You can go home...
By S. Frank
Lovely story about going home to heal. Meri walked away from the pageants she hated and started a new life as a photographer in New York City. Now she has come home to North Carolina to help take care of her sick grandfather. She's also trying to recover from an attack that left her scarred and afraid to pick up her camera again. The last thing she expects is to run into her old boyfriend Jack.

Jack is out of the army and back home also. He's spent a year trying to hide from his memories. He's drifting a bit, working in his father's garage and doing handyman things for Meri's grandfather. Seeing Meri again reminds him of everything he's lost. She was the girl he loved, but pushed away before he left for the army. Now he can't forget his feelings of guilt over the death of his best friend and Meri's cousin.

Both Meri and Jack are suffering from PTSD. Meri ran from the city and her memories of what happened, but every time she picks up her camera she sees her attacker. She is hoping that being back home will give her the motivation she needs to take back her life. It isn't easy when she has to stand up to her pushy, stage mother, Southern belle mama, who pushed into all those pageants, and is still trying to run her life. Jack blames himself for Eli's death and has frequent flashbacks to when it happened. He hasn't been able to talk about it with anyone, and is certain that everyone else will blame him too.

Jack and Meri are frequently thrown together as they help Meri's grandfather. It soon becomes obvious that their old feelings are still going strong. Jack has no trouble seeing past the scar on Meri's face to the woman she is beneath the beauty. He's there for her when she opens up about what happened to her and her fears about what it has done to her, and is able to show her how strong she really is. He loves her but fears her reaction if he tells her about Eli's death, so he tries to stay away from her. Meri was hurt when Jack broke off their relationship way back when, but seeing him again shows her that the feelings are still there. She notices the way that Jack pulls back every time they seem to get closer and aches for the pain she sees in his eyes. Can their love overcome their fears?

I loved the depth of the emotions that each of the characters shows. Meri's fears about never getting her photography back are deep. Her hurt at the way her mother treats her, and her wish for her mother to see Meri for who she really is. I loved that she was able to express those feelings to her mother, and was really surprised at what happened because of it. Jack's pain was especially emotional. He was so haunted by his guilt and his memories that he hadn't ever allowed himself to grieve. The meeting between him and Meri by the treehouse was incredibly moving. The ending was simply terrific.

Beautifully written..True happiness is right in front of you,,,
By Ramona Kekstadt
Beautiful...The Homecoming Queen Get's Her Man: The beginning to an amazing series to be sure.
When Meri Prescott's returns to her home town of Stone Gap, it has her wondering if she made a mistake at first.
First stop see her mom, and it's as she expected it was going to go. The reason to visit home come was
to help Grandpa Ray. Meri gets a bit surprised when she reaches the backyard. The last person she wants to see
is Jack Barlow...well who's in the backyard none other then Mr. Barlow..The last time she saw him he was telling her needed more then she could give him, he left the very next day into the army.

The more Jack and Meri time spend with each other the feelings between them re-surface. He fights them every step of the way, and keeps pushing away from her. He is hiding and fighting demons, but she is running from something as well..She opens up to him, but it takes something else to make him break. You'll see and it really touching.

Is it possible for them to help each other? When they both find out the truth behind the secrets, the demons that they are both harboring?

My favorite line-
"What do you see?" Meri asked softly.
A white butterfly fluttered in the undergrowth, then flitted out of his line of sight.
"Beauty,"he whispered," I see...beauty."
"That's what I see, too, Jack, True beauty, not the manufactured kind.

I laughed out loud, cried.. I was touched by several moments throughout this book..
Highly recommend this book. Shirley Jump is amazing..

I can't say enough good things about it
By Cathy J.
This story of Jack and Meri really touched me. I can't say enough good things about it. It is wonderful on so many levels! Yes, there is the love story between Jack and Meri, which started when they were kids, and hit some serious rough patches. His stint in the war and the death of Eli would derail anyone. For a short book, this is so much more than a romance, though. It's the story of a town, a community of people that loves its own, and a sneaky family matchmaker. Plus, there is the heartache of strained relations between a parent and grown child. Even though these are all serious topics, Shirley Jump has made this a fun, entertaining read. I highly recommend it, and it just might heal some of the reader's own heartaches, that we all deal with in one way or another. I'm so glad I was given a copy in return for an honest review. It's the holidays and I have many things on my to-do list, but I kept finding excuses to push those things aside. Warning: this book is hard to put down. I loved it!
