Nantucket Five-spot: A Henry Kennis Mystery (Henry Kennis Mysteries), by Steven Axelrod

Henry Kennis, Nantucket island’s poetry-writing police chief who will remind readers of Robert B. Parker’s Jesse Stone and Spenser, works a second challenging case in Nantucket Five-spot.
At the height of the summer tourist season, a threat to bomb the annual Boston Pops Concert could destroy the island’s economy, along with its cachet as a safe, if mostly summer-time, haven for America’s ruling class. The threat of terrorism brings The Department of Homeland Security to the island, along with prospects for a rekindled love affair―Henry’s lost love works for the DHS now.
The “terrorism” aspects of the attack prove to be a red herring. The truth lies much closer to home. At first suspicion falls on local carpenter Billy Delavane, but Henry investigates the case and proves that Billy is being framed. Then it turns out that Henry’s new suspect is also being framed―for the bizarre and almost undetectable crime of framing someone else. Every piece of evidence works three ways in the investigation of a crime rooted in betrayed friendship, in˜ delity, and the quiet poisonous feuds of small town life. Henry traces the origin of the attacks back almost twenty years and uncovers an obsessive revenge conspiracy that he must unravel―now alone, discredited and on the run―before further disaster strikes.

Review
Near the outset of Axelrod’s satisfying follow-up to 2014’s Nantucket Sawbuck, island police chief Henry “Hank” Kennis thinks a bomb threat―to blow up the summer Boston Pops concert, where political and business elite gather―is a teenage prank, so he’s surprised when Department of Homeland Security agents Jack Tornovitch, with whom he tangled on an earlier case, and Frances Tate, a romantic interest from that same case, arrive on Nantucket. Meanwhile, Zeke Beaumont, a former U.S. Army sergeant who served 10 years for drug dealing in Iraq, also comes to the island, to take vengeance on the military officer he blames for his incarceration. Hank’s knowledge of Nantucket and its residents pits him against Jack, who focuses only on local suspects. Suspense builds when Hank discovers a frame-up within a frame-up, and he races the clock to identify and stop the bomber. Despite a pasteboard villain and a far-fetched climax, Axelrod crafts an enjoyable, fast-paced read. (Publishers Weekly)

Those darned summer visitors are ruining it for the rest of us
By Lisa Ahlstedt
Chief Henry Kennis is attempting to keep his Nantucket Island community in order during the yearly influx of visitors during the summer. Unfortunately, a mad bomber is threatening to wipe out the rich and famous who congregate on the island for the 4th of July holiday. One bright spot is that the bomber's activities have gotten the attention of the FBI and Dept. of Homeland Security, who send agents to investigate, including Henry's old flame Franny Tate. Is it too late to rekindle their romance that started when they worked together in Los Angeles (where Franny is still based)? Henry hopes the answer is no as he woos Franny with dinners and evenings out. Unfortunately, Henry is also acquainted with Franny's partner, the obnoxious and overbearing Jack Tornovitch, who likes nothing better than blustering around while Franny does all the work (then taking all the credit). Tornovitch wastes no time in pointing the finger at several of Henry's friends and co-workers for the bomber's activities, even arresting assistant police chief Haden Krakauer and not allowing him contact with the outside world. In flashbacks, we are introduced to "Zeke," the bomber, who began plotting his revenge against superior officers who allowed him to take the fall for a drug-dealing ring that was operating while Zeke was stationed in the Middle East. Zeke obviously has taken on a new identity, but who is he? Could he be someone Henry has worked with for many years without suspecting his ulterior motives, or is he one of the influx of visitors to the island? Time is running as a big 4th of July fireworks show will gather everyone on the island together in an irresistible target for the bomber.

I enjoyed the suspenseful build-up of Henry and Franny trying franticly to unravel the identity of the bomber, while being obstructed at every turn by the obstinate and glowering Tornavitch. At the same time, I felt there were so many characters to keep track of that I had a hard time sorting them all out. When someone was mentioned, I had to flip back in the pages to figure out who that was. Still, the story moved quickly and I could sympathize with Henry, trying hard to keep his little piece of the world safe and orderly as it is threatened by forces beyond his control. I understand this is the second in the Henry Kennis mystery series, so if I go back and read the first one, it might be easier to sort out characters!

Great read
By Terri Hoffman Curtis
I just finished reading Steven Axelrod's Nantucket Five-Spot and am trying to find a profound statement to sum up this roller-coaster ride of a read. All I can think of is "WOW". I'm exhausted due to Axelrod's talent that takes the reader right along with his characters on this crime-solving adventure.

Nantucket Five-Spot is the second book featuring Nantucket Police Chief Henry Kennis. In this story, Kennis must stop someone who is threatening to set off a bomb at Nantucket's Boston Pops concert. Axelrod reeled me along like a fish on a hook, making me think I had the criminal's identity figured out from the start, then surprising me in the end. He threw in so many red herrings, twists and turns that I still suspected another to appear right up until the last sentence.

This was my first Axelrod read. When I started reading, I was tempted to compare his main character to Jesse Stone, or Jessica Fletcher (yeah, I'm that old). As I progressed through the story, I realized Axelrod definitely has a unique style of his own, and to compare him to any other author would be a disservice to him and Chief Kennis.

My only complaint is with one chapter where the story turns to the point of view of a character who dies. That happens to be one of my pet peeves; dead people can't tell their story in first person unless it's a paranormal story. I won't name the character or chapter because I don't want to spoil the story for the next reader, but that character and entire chapter seemed contrived and unnecessary.

Characters from Axelrod's first Chief Kennis book are mentioned throughout this second story. That glimpse and Axelrod's writing style have me ready to read the first installment, and I look forward to more.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Complicated but interesting plot
By consumerinaz
Police chief on Nantucket dealing with bomb threat. Good. Complicated plots. Hero is so tolerant as to be unbelievable at times. Former love interest comes back into picture. Also an ex-wife and 2 children. Reader kept interested. I did guess main bad guy before it is announced.
