Great read!

This is a great read as John Patrick Hickey gives the reader the tools that are necessary to achieve the success that so easily can elude us. John gives great directions through the practical things you need for any journey: a map, plan, vehicle, the right information, scheduled stops, a time table, and a journal. Great advice from John and a simple and practical book that encourages us, "Yes you can"!

The Journey Begins

Jack Hickey contacted me asking me if I’d be available to read an EBook he’s written on achievement. Generally, I respond favorably to requests to read books unless I have really absolutely no interest whatsoever in the subject matter. I told him he could email me a copy of his manuscript and I would send it to my Kindle and when I got the chance, I would go through it for him.

I had the chance to do that recently to which, that brings me up to the first point I want to make about the book. This is a good short book. You will not take a lot of time to read it. The lessons found in there can be learned easily and each chapter in the book ends with some immediate suggestions that you can follow. There are also interesting sidebars along the way that contain great motivational quotes.

Those wanting to find a full Christian emphasis will not do so, and that is fine. The principles of success work regardless, though Hickey does say later in the book that he is a follower of Jesus Christ. This is the kind of message that too many Christians should have. Too few Christians have any sort of drive in them to do anything to change the world around them and just go along with what the surrounding culture has to say.

Along those lines, you will not find anything in here like you would in a Joel Osteen book. Hickey makes it clear that on the path to success, you do not take shortcuts. You will have to work. This is too often a dirty message to the world we have around us. We live in an age where people expect great skill to come upon them immediately. We do not think that we need to be reading books to educate us because, hey, we have Wikipedia and Google. What more do we need? Our culture has some of the greatest tools that we could have ever dreamed of for success, and instead we use them as tools of laziness.

While Hickey’s book is certainly helpful, if I had one aspect of it I would have liked changed, it has to do with those sidebars. It’s great to have the quotes of people throughout the years who have been successful and are motivational speakers in that regard as well, but often when I found a great quote, I would often be left thinking “I wonder where I can find that quote.” It’s a small little thing, but I hope that when the print version comes out that these quotes will have citations with them so that they can be looked up.

Still, that is my biggest criticism and that biggest one is really a small one. I think Hickey’s book is excellent and as a follower of Christ, I wish more of my fellow Christians had some sort of drive to succeed in them, and they sadly do not. We need to realize we were made for much more than what it is that we settle with and that we can do and be the light of the world as Christ calls us to be. It is not the fault that the means are not there. It is that the will to follow through with them is not there.

John's book uses the metaphor of planning a trip and then uses his book to take us on the trip. It shares some of the best insights from others in the field of personal achievement and integrates John's personal journey. It is a book that can be read and enjoyed both by someone new to this genre or by the active student of personal growth. The 1st step is to read the book but as John points out the most important step is to then apply what you learned from the book not just read it. Consciousness Archeology is a wonderful compilation of many recent, successful self-help books bringing us a guide to the journey towards self-knowing and insight. Many of the 29 books listed in the authors Acknowledgement have been on best seller list and contain hundreds of pages.
This book gives us a pocket size reference guide that we can turn to daily and find tips, answers and exercises’ to help turn our life towards the light.
Page by page and step by step Maximus Freeman shares his journey toward unlearning, self-forgiveness, mindfulness, the Inner-Teacher and Inner- Genius.
Maximus takes us through his personal ups and downs sharing his ride through life to show everyone that we all have our struggles. Then he leads us on the journey to knowing how to change the struggles into self-honesty that can be used to move us toward the light with more ease.
This book is easy to read and Mr. Freeman's writing style makes you think he is talking to you in person, telling you his story on the patio under the sun and wind watching the ocean in the distance.

Interesting spiritual self-help...

I will admit that this book is not within my normal "wheelhouse", although certainly we all need the occasional reminder when discord starts to weigh us down. I try to utilize yoga and certain other mental exercises to allow escape from "the ties that bind" so to speak. So, while I do not frequently read self-help style books, in this case at least I am glad that I did.

Freeman has enough to say to keep you interested in his process, although I was a bit taken back by how much he used other guru's ideas and freely quoted. That's not necessarily a bad thing, although I admit to thinking that the book would be elevated much higher if more of the work was personally owned.

Having said that, this book is worth taking the time to explore. Some of the ideas expounded were new to me.... and some were not. Taken in context, the ideas are worth considering and worth employing if you find yourself in need and agreeing with his premise of letting go, forgiveness, and moving forward. In reality I think those are three lynchpins upon which it is possible to relieve discord and build harmony. So, I find myself returning to the book and re-reading parts of it, not so much because I am in desperate need at this moment, but because I find it interesting.

So, if you are one of the many (or the few..) who need a spiritual lift and an occasional reminder of how and why we get ourselves into a personal funk....and what to do about it, then this book could be just what you need. Read it, consider it carefully, and then either act upon it... or not. We are, after all, a product of our environment. And if we allow our environment to control our minds, our sense of purpose, and ultimately our well-being, then we deserve what we become.

It's a short book. Take a few minutes, relax and read. I think you will be better for the experience.

Wonderfully Written, Journey to Enlightenment

Wonderfully written, this book is short, sweet, and directly to the point. Maximus Freeman shares with the reader a way to approach/work toward inner peace and enlightenment. Sharing intimate stories of his own life, he manages to not bog down the reader with tons of extraneous material that are off point. Rather, he models vulnerability and humility from details of his life experiences so that the reader may come to feel connected and not alone on this journey.

His lessons and suggestions feel like a harmonious connection of his wisdom and teachings many of us may already be aware of; yet, he found a way to compile and present the life-lessons in a successfully succinct manner. It took about 3-4 hours to carefully read aloud the book to a friend. We took many moments to ponder and discuss elements. We had “Ah-HA” moments as well as “Really?” moments, along with “yes…I heard that before” comments.

All the gentle reminders of how to find peace/enlightenment are needed to nudge us back on path or to plant a seed. If you are or are still searching for a path or know someone else who is, this book may be very helpful. By reading it, I find my own desire to move toward the light increased.

"one is never sure " who donne it"

and so fiendishly talented writer, Peter Halsey Sherwood, spins yet another mystery with a humorous twist on his lips and twinkle in his eyes;
as I was busily trying out the drinks recipes I was splendidly entertained by the adventure or the misadventure of the two Chalmers brothers, accompanied by a pack of colorful characters. I am eagerly awaiting the next book because I have become an admirer of these charming and to me clever books of "crime".

Mysterious Murder on the High Seas

Once again brothers Willloughby and Reynald Chalmers set off on an adventure narrated, in-part, by fiendish recipes. Off on the high-seas the brother encounter mayhem, murder and mystery as the plot from "A Murderously Delicious Hamwich Gumm Mystery" develops in twists and turns on the tumultuous high seas. Featuring colorful characters, beverages and plot points, this one is not to be missed!

Another great read from Peter Halsey Sherwood -- with lots of recipes included, it's the best of both worlds: a mystery and a cookbook! Sherwood's tone is arch and hilarious, and the scenes he conjures up are cinematic and intriguing. I wonder what those two brothers will get up to next?!

excellent story and characters

We have seen movies and TV dramas and read books about lovers who when forced to separate promise to wait for each other ‘forever’. How long do such promises usually last; weeks, months or possibly even years? Most frequently these promises and loves just slowly fade into memory. This book is a beautifully crafted story that follows such a vow for 40 years. It shows us with vignettes spanning those years how such a relationship was built that could spawn such an enduring promise. The story follows the woman who shared the vow and the pain and isolation that she willingly suffered to maintain her promise. But it is not just sadness; the story also portrays the personal growth and enlightenment she achieved. Reading this book, you will feel and share the emotions that the heroine Andy felt and you will share in her ultimate reward. A five-star read.
This is part two in the Citizens of Civilization series, following the story of Earl Hollsopple in Edge of Civilization. The author returns with the two main characters of that story and introduces us to more engaging residents of Las Vegas.

Searching Civilization (Citizens of Civilization) is the second in the Civilization series. It is another magnificent book by Jennifer Ott, and answers many of the questions that remained after reading The Edge of Civilization. Searching Civilization focuses on Andy and her life after losing Earl, her PTSD suffering Vietnam vet. Searching Civilization is a great love story about a woman who would not give up on her man, and the faithful life she lived during the 40 years she awaited his return. Once again, Ott has made the characters, and the scene, come alive in the mind of the reader.
Even though this is the second in the series, it stands alone as a well-written and compelling book. If you read The Edge of Civilization first, you will better understand the questions that Searching Civilization answers. However, in whatever order you read them, you will not be disappointed.
Oh, just one thing, be sure to have a bowl of crickets nearby to munch on as you read. And remember, everything goes better with hot sauce . . . even crickets.

Love that spans a lifetime

Searching Civilization gives the reader a side of Earl's story that really needed to be told. The book starts out with the modern-day Andi, but then it goes back to different time periods. Throughout these different time periods we get to see Andi as a whole, and the journey of her lifetime becomes clearer. True love doesn't always happen in the way that we think it will, and it isn't always immediate. I thought this book was a really good addition to the series.

Three years after I made an agreement with the U.S. Board of Directors of the More To Life (MTL) program to write a book that would support MTL students, as well as people who've never heard of MTL, it is done. I am excited, relieved, nervous and proud.  The excitement is about the possibility of spreading a human technology that literally can be life saving - it was for me. The relief is that this has been a project on my plate for a long time, and it's finally come to fruition.   Mostly I am proud of committing to do something that I had never done before. I know how to do what I do, I'm good at it. AND I branched out into unfamiliar territory. That was an awesome adventure.

Stephen Long is a high school teacher at the start of summer vacation. He's out for a jog trying to better himself--middle age has brought with it a paunch and high cholesterol--when he finds a discarded duffel bag full of money. A lot of money. 1.2 million dollars to be exact. Game-changing money. Life changing money. So much money that Stephen knows it will better his life and the lives of his wife and kids. He takes the money, ignoring the fact that the duffel bag he's found it in is bloodied and bullet pocked.

What Stephen hasn't noticed out in the woods where he found the money is the bag man lying mortally wounded some distance off. But the dying man has seen Stephen, and when two out-of-town gun men arrive looking for the cash owed their boss, the last thing the bag man does before he expires is to tell them everything he knows. Including Stephen's description.

The out-of-towners--who refer to themselves as Bandit and Snowman--are stone cold killers from down in New York City, sent to retrieve their boss' money. What they quickly piece together is the crew that owed their boss the money was robbed by the dead bag man. They hook up with the crew, which is led by a young thug named Antoine. Sure, 'twan is a gangster, but he has ambition and skill. He wants to parlay the money he makes hustling into his career as a magician for children's parties. Snowman and Bandit tool around town with 'twan and his boys, hunting down leads that will show them the way to their money.

Meanwhile, Stephen is already dreaming of the ways he'll spend the fortune he's come into. He'll buy a new car, hire a personal trainer, and leave his wife for Ming, the younger woman at work he's infatuated with. He's bubbling over with excitement and tempted to tell someone, but who's he going to tell? His neighbor, Allen? No. Allen is distraught over the disappearance of his drug-addled youngest daughter, Trina, who appears to have run away again. His other neighbor, Kyle? No. Kyle is beset by PTSD from a war in the desert and often stands around outside by himself outside at night on the lawns. Stephen won't be deterred. Brimming with optimism, and feeling that, for the first time in his life, things are going his way, he calls Ming and asks her if she'd like to meet him for a cup of coffee downtown. Surprisingly, she agrees. Things definitely are going his way.

Until they aren't. Stephen meets Ming at the coffee house and does his best to woo her. Unbeknownst to our high school teachers, one of 'twan's boys spots Stephen, recognizing him from a detail the bag man let on to Snowman and Bandit. Whne he follows Stephen to his house, he reports the information. Now the out of town killers know where Stephen lives. They know where their money is. And things are about to get crazy.

I got turned on to Tony with his Eden series. Since then I've read everythin he puts into print. This book is another great story with likable characters. Whether you want the good guys to win, you seem to be pulling for the bad guy. Excellent read. Buy this!

Again a Home Run By Tony M. Opened this book and could not put it down at all. If you liked any of his other work you will LOVE this. If you have never read any work by Tony, im so sorry for you. This man is an artist. Must read.

Skill is one of those books that I find to be rare. What has made it rare is that is so different than anything Tony Monchinski has written before. I started off reading Tony's work with the Eden series of books. Eden was just one of those type of books that I couldn't put down and I couldn't wait for the next one in the series. I was hooked from the first book to the last one.

Tony then introduced us to the I Kill Monster series. One of the few authors today that is not writing Vampire's and Werewolves that feel like they belong in a teenage star crossed lovers world. It really put the bite back into Vampires.

Warlord Dervish was another book by Tony that hooked me in right away. It has the action mixed with elements of horror. Tony's book Little Bird's was one of the first books to cause me to stop and look at the person sitting next to me. That was until I read Skill. Skill now has me wondering, what is it that my neighbor might be hiding? Why does that car keep circling the neighborhood? Who are those two strangers that keep walking past my neighbors house?

Skill has something for everyone to connect with. We live in a world that anything can happen at anytime and Skill brings that to light. Tony Does a great job in showing that and creating a world that is so true to life. I think we all know a character or two from Skill in our own lives. Knowing that makes me look at my friends, family and neighbors and wonder what they are true capable of.
