Cute story but needs a good proofreader
By Penny
This was a cute wholesome story and a quick read. Although the story line was good, there were a lot of errors in grammar, wrong verb tense used and just plain bad sentence structure. Some editing and proofreading would have made this a much better read, and then I would probably have given it 5 stars.

Doors of the Church Are Open: Smoke and Mirrors, by Sonya Shuman

Welcome to the life of the Golden family. Al Golden, a man. A reformed drug dealer turned entrepreneur and pastor of the largest church in Newark, New Jersey. The Goldens have it all: Looks, fame, fortune, faith and God's favor. Another thing they have that is not so apparent to the untrained eye of the public that praises them, is flaws. Lauded and loved by the residents of the city of Newark they can do no wrong. Or so it seems from the outside looking in.

The invisible dome that had surrounded the Golden family for so long begins to crack beneath the weight of unresolved issues and grief at the passing of their beloved Carla Golden, the matriarch. The Goldens shiny exterior begins to tarnish before everyone's very eyes as their past comes back to haunt them and bad habits hidden in the darkness; secrets held behind the closed doors and the velvet rope of the pulpit of the church are brought to light.

Will they survive under the weight of the pressure of exposure? In mid fall off of the religious pedestals set so high by the community, do they have the strength to keep their composure?

A microcosm for the hypocrisy that lies underneath the covers of American society, the Golden family, a sleeping giant, is about to be exposed.

A tale of truth and lies; loss, lust, love, life and grace and humanity; They are left to wonder if their faith has failed them or if they are their own undoing. Can this Golden family survive the impending implosion that is their lives?

This is a barrier breaking story about the rise and fall of the kings of the church. A narrative that depicts reality in the raw. It is humanity, heaven, hell and high water for the reader. Not for the faint of heart, it is an adventurous drama that reflects the real lives of the haves and the have nots. Dispelling religious dogma, this deep read serves salvation and nakedness. A must read. This work will change the life of every reader and make you rethink your relationship with yourself, God and others. You are guaranteed to never be the same after ingesting this soul food.

From the Author
I wrote this book to dispel myths about God, salvation, people and life. What influenced the journey to The Doors... were my experiences at various churches over the years. Me being a confused Christian having been trapped by religion. Having been beaten into submitting to man's will, not that of God. Fortunately enough, I was not raised in a religious household. In hindsight, I believe that as a youth, I may have enjoyed too much freedom. Because of such libertarian rearing or lack thereof, depending upon view, worshipping authoritative figures has never been a priority on my list. I have always been rebellious in that aspect.  Keeping in mind, I believe in giving respect where it is due, in the same token, I am also a firm believer that God is no respecter of persons not withstanding, there is a time and place for everything. Even Jesus encouraged people to render to Caesar what was his. Give respect and honor where it is indeed due.

There is a way to come before kings as God is a God of order. As there is God-ordained authority and leadership where in fact we must submit in many instances, We must bear in mind, dominion and authority are not given exclusively to "men" as in the sex, per se. Often times where we see "man" or "men" in biblical text, it means the whole of humanity. Not just males. Not just leadership. We all have something to bring to the table. As equally, we are all very flawed creatures who ourselves need to submit to the leadership of God's Holy Spirit. One day every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord. One day, we will all submit willfully to the will of God.

That being established, there are far too many people in the world, most notably, the African-American community that idolize and magnify clergymen/women; leadership, celebrity, etc., on a whole. This leads to inflated egos, corruption, pride, the fall and destruction, more importantly let downs. We created "gods" making these people super when they are just as human as we are. We are all composed of the same materials. From dust to dust. People find themselves manipulated into purchasing products and sleeping with leaders of the church that have pridefully partaken of the nectar of the "false gods" that is "Kool-Aid" i.e., fame. Hanging on the every word of a politician that comes with his/her own song, dance, bag of tricks and agenda. The Lord knows us all behind those closed doors of our churches, offices and homes. We are all human.

We dance around golden calves all the day and night here in America with little to no repercussion. The Lord is urging the sleeping giant that is these United States and religious factions all over the diaspora to wake up.

In closing, we have all forsaken The Lord and forgotten love. The hearts of man have waxed cold. This is not something I wanted to do. This is something that had to be done. Thus, I submitted.

Furthermore, I wrote this book because I believe it is what The Lord's Spirit, placed in my spirit to give birth to. it is time for a change in America. Again, most notably in black America. it is time to change our view. The time has come to renew our minds. The time for religious practice has come and gone. It is now time or righteous realists to rise up. It is time for a greater understanding of one and other, self and The Lord. It is time to be in right relationship with God the Father through Jesus Christ the son. He is calling us to come up higher.

From the Inside Flap
As you read this story. I pray that your heart softens, your eyes open and your mind changes. I believe in this hour, God is challenging us to change. We have a responsibility to The Lord, ourselves and one another that we have forgotten. We have gotten to a place where everybody is expendable and where the human soul holds less value than a material item.

We have relinquished our devotion to The Lord and have made for ourselves Golden Calves that are clergy, celebrities, men and women, politicians and fans for that matter. We have turned away from what matters, to things that hold no real value. We have forgotten what we came for. This book is an eye opening, controversial look into the lives of each one of us. In this hour, I believe The Lord is pulling back our covers and exposing our nakedness. Doors of the church are open!

Treasured (Secrets of the Loch), by Candace Camp

Love is in the cards for a young Scottish heiress in the first book of a delicious new trilogy of historical romances, Secrets of the Loch, from New York Times bestselling author Candace Camp.
A family legend of hidden treasure mingles with the mist over the shores of Loch Baille... But it's not the cache of gold dating back to Culloden that Jack Kensington claims when he arrives in the Highlands; it's the house he won in a London card game from a luckless Scotsman.
Stunned to learn that her wastrel brother wagered their family estate, Isobel Rose must find a way to save her home and the people she loves...even if it means accepting a loveless marriage. Or perhaps not so loveless? Isobel unlocks the secrets of desire in the arms of the mysterious and handsome Englishman, but a series of accidents makes her fear that she will soon be a widow instead of a wife. As their hunt for lost riches turns into the search for a killer, Isobel fights her attraction to the man who stole her birthright...but can Jack convince Isobel that he can provide a home for her heart, and a love to treasure?

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Isobel Rose’s profligate brother, Andrew, has lost their ancestral Scottish estate, Baillannan, in a card game. Jack Kensington, the Englishman who won their home, intends to sell it. But Isobel has a proposition. If Jack will marry her, she’ll continue to manage their holdings and send the profits to him in London. The marriage will, she tells him, be strictly a business arrangement. Jack is quite taken with the spunky beauty and agrees to her terms. He’s determined to make it a marriage in fact, however, not one of convenience. Unfortunately, there’s someone who’d rather see Jack dead than wed, and no one knows who that is. Camp’s witty historical romance is set during the Highland Clearances, a period when tenants were “cleared” or evicted from their homes by their rich landlords to make room for the more profitable venture of sheep farming. Camp deftly weaves together the enticing elements of her novel—suspense, family relations, the mystery of an old murder, a hidden treasure, and, of course, an unlikely romance. There’s something for everyone in the first book of the Secrets of the Loch trilogy. --Shelley Mosley

APRIL 1807

It was raining. It had been doing so, Jack thought in disgust, ever since he set foot in this benighted land. Sometimes the water fell in slanted sheets, lashing him like bits of iron; other times, it subsided into a steady, miserable drizzle. But even when the rain stopped briefly, mist still hung over everything, as if the very air were so laden with moisture it could not hold it.

A cold drop of water slid between cloth and skin, trickling down his back, and Jack turned up the collar of his greatcoat as he gazed out across the bleak landscape. The road—if this rutted, narrow path could be termed that—cut across thick mats of heather and disappeared into the distance. There were few trees between him and the gray curtain of mist, only the brown and green land and a few scrubby bushes. Off to his right, a trench had been dug into the ground, exposing a straight wall of black earth. Rocks of all sizes dotted the lumpy, irregular ground, adding to the image of desolation.

What had possessed him to come to Scotland?

He had asked himself that question last night as he’d lain on the thin straw mattress in the grim little inn in Kinclannoch—indeed he’d asked it almost nightly for the past week, and had still not come up with a satisfactory answer. There was no reason to see the house that was now his or to talk to the people who worked on the estate. His only desire was to sell the place, which fortune had dropped in his lap like an overripe plum. Whatever little tickle of proprietary instinct had made him want to see it, whatever odd pull he’d felt at the thought of being a landed gentleman, the truth was his impulsive journey up here to claim the estate made him as big a fool as the bird-witted Scotsman who had wagered his home on the turn of a card.

Still, it made even less sense to turn back now, when he had drawn so close to his destination. If he had understood the innkeeper’s thick brogue, the house could not be much farther.

His horse whickered and shifted as a gust of wind whipped through them, driving the rain into Jack’s face and nearly taking his hat with it. He grabbed the once elegant, now sodden hat, jamming it more firmly down on his head, and leaned over to stroke a soothing hand down the horse’s neck. “Steady on, Pharaoh.”

Now, blown by the wind, the mist receded, and he could see the narrow loch and, at last, the house. It lay on a shelf of rock beside the water, a long, straight line of stone unbroken by curve or ornamentation. As gray and dreary as the loch and the sky above it, the house might have been formed out of this bleak landscape itself.

Baillannan.

If Jack had harbored some hope that the sight of his new home would lighten his mood, he knew now he was doomed to disappointment. Nothing could have looked less welcoming. Suppressing a sigh, he dug in his heels and started forward.

Isobel was carefully pulling out the last few stitches in her embroidery when her aunt startled her by exclaiming, “We have a visitor! How nice! Barbara, did you know someone was coming?”

“Isobel,” she corrected automatically, and her aunt nodded vaguely.

“Yes, dear, of course.”

“Who is it?” Isobel set aside her needlework and stood up, suddenly hopeful. “Is it Andrew?”

Aunt Elizabeth squinted down at the courtyard below. “I don’t think it’s anyone I recognize.”

“A stranger?” Isobel joined her aunt at the window, but their visitor had already disappeared, and she saw nothing but the groom leading off an unfamiliar bay horse.

“He looked soaked, poor man,” Elizabeth went on sympathetically. “Perhaps he’s a traveler seeking shelter from the rain.”

“A traveler to where?” Isobel asked pragmatically. “It’s my guess he’s gone astray. No doubt Hamish will set him straight.”

“It would have been nice to have a visitor,” her aunt said wistfully. “So many people have left, one hardly sees anyone anymore.”

“Yes, since the Clearances began, our closest neighbors are now sheep,” Isobel agreed tartly.

“The MacKenzies would not have sold if Ronald was still alive. Poor Agnes; she will not enjoy living in Edinburgh, however much her son may have profited.”

Agnes MacKenzie had been Elizabeth’s closest friend, and Isobel’s aunt had been lonely with her gone. Isobel could not help but feel that the loss had affected Aunt Elizabeth’s mind as well as her spirits; she had grown more forgetful the last few months.

Isobel murmured a vague agreement, not wanting to set her aunt off on that unpleasant path. She returned to the sofa and picked up her embroidery hoop, saying, “I fear I’ve made a shambles of my stitches. What do you think I should do?”

Elizabeth was distracted by Isobel’s plea for help, and she started toward her niece. But she had scarcely taken a step when the quiet was interrupted by the sound of a voice rising in agitation downstairs. Surprised, both women glanced toward the door. A moment later, there was the clatter of feet on the stairs, and one of the maids burst into the room.

“Miss Isobel!” The girl’s face was flushed and her voice trembled with excitement. “Hamish says come quick. There’s a man here, claiming Baillannan is his!”

“What?” Isobel stared at the girl. Her words were so absurd that Isobel thought she must not have heard the maid correctly.

“A man, miss, at the door. An Englishman. He says he owns Baillannan. Then Hamish says he maun be daft, but the man says, ‘Nae, it’s mine,’ and shows him a paper, and Hamish sends me to fetch you.”

“Isobel . . .” Aunt Elizabeth turned toward her, frowning. “I don’t understand. An Englishman, here? Who is he? What does he mean?”

“I have no idea. It’s nonsense, of course.” Isobel started toward the hall. “Don’t worry, Auntie, I will straighten it out.”

At the foot of the staircase Isobel was met by the sight of Hamish, the man who had been the Rose family butler all her life, standing, arms crossed, as if he would bar the man from the stairs physically. His weathered face, usually set in stoic, even grim, lines, was red as a beet, bushy brows drawn together, dark eyes glittering with dislike.

Opposite him stood a stranger, tall and dark-haired, his face creased in frustration. He would have been a handsome man, she thought, if he had not been soaked to the skin, his cravat a soggy lump around his neck, starched collar points utterly wilted, and his fine wool jacket stretched out of shape by the weight of the water it had absorbed. He held a waterlogged hat in one hand and a many-caped, gray greatcoat hung over the same arm, both of them puddling water on the stone floor beneath him. His boots were caked with mud, and between the sides of his open jacket, his wet shirt clung to his chest. It was made of fine lawn and the water had turned it almost transparent, so that she could see every line and curve of his chest and stomach. As she watched, he reached up and shoved the mop of hair back from his face, stripping water from it. His hair was thick, and slicked back as it now was, it left his face in sharp relief, emphasizing the square set of his jaw and the high slant of his cheekbones. An errant drop of water trickled from his temple, sliding down his cheek and curving over his jaw to disappear in the cloth of his cravat.

Isobel realized that she was staring, and she quickly averted her eyes, a faint flush rising in her cheeks. “Hamish? Is there a problem?”

The stranger looked up at her, relief flooding his face, and burst out, “Ma’am! Thank heavens, you speak English.”

Isobel raised her brows, her voice faintly amused. “I do indeed, sir. I believe you will find that most of us do.”

“Not so I could tell,” he responded with a dark look at the butler.

“I canna help it if you dinna understand clear speech.” Hamish set his jaw mulishly.

The stranger ignored his retort, addressing his words to Isobel. “If I might be so bold as to introduce myself, I am Jack Kensington, ma’am, at your service.” He swept her a polite bow, elegant in spite of his drenched condition.

He was clearly a gentleman, his speech and manners as refined as those of her brother or cousin—perhaps more so—and she suspected that his clothes were equally sophisticated when not soaked by the rain.

Isobel was as intrigued as she was puzzled, and she came down the last few steps and held out her hand to him. “I am Isobel Rose, sir. I’m pleased to make your acquaintance.”

Mr. Kensington looked taken aback, but he recovered quickly and took her hand, bending over it politely. “Mrs. Rose. An apt name for such a lovely woman.”

“Miss Rose,” Isobel corrected him, pulling her hand back. His words were too forward and no doubt meaningless flattery, but she could not deny the lift of pleasure at his compliment.

“Dinna trust him, Miss Isobel,” the butler warned, taking a step toward her protectively. “This Englishman is trying to swick you. Or he’s daft. He says he owns Baillannan.”

“I’m sure his intent is not to swindle us,” Isobel replied. “Perhaps he has been misled.” She turned to Kensington. “I am sorry, sir, but you are mistaken. Baillannan belongs to the Rose family.”

“It did,” Kensington responded tersely, his courteous manner giving way to irritation. “But it is mine now. I have it from Sir Andrew Rose.”

“No!” Isobel stared at him in astonishment. “Andrew would never have sold Baillannan.”

“He did not sell it, ma’am. He wagered it on a game of whist. And lost.”

“No,” she repeated, but the blood drained from her face, and for an instant she thought she might faint. “I don’t believe you.”

“Then believe this.” He shoved a piece of paper into her hand. “It is Sir Andrew’s chit.”

Isobel stared at the familiar writing, the bold swoop of the A, and this time she did have to reach for the newel to stay upright.

“Miss Isobel?” Hamish stepped forward anxiously and took her arm to support her. “What is it? The young laird never—”

“Yes.” Isobel kept her gaze on the words, now swimming before her eyes. “I fear he did. ’Tis Andrew’s hand. He wagered Baillannan,” she finished bitterly.

“I have the deed, as well,” the Englishman added mildly.

“No doubt.” Her stomach was roiling. She wanted to scream and shred the note, to toss it back in the stranger’s face and tell her men to toss him back out into the rain. But she was a Rose, and so she must put iron into her spine. Isobel blinked back her tears—she refused to let him see her cry.

He was holding out the deed to her, and she took it, running her eyes down it as if she were reading it, when in truth she could not take in any of the words, her mind overwhelmed by something close to terror. She had no idea what to do, so she clung to the behavior that one expected from the lady of Baillannan, a stoicism that hid the turmoil inside.

“Welcome to Baillannan, Mr. Kensington,” she said tightly as she handed him back the papers, though she could not manage to look him in the face. “Hamish, show Mr. Kensington to a room. I am sure he would like to get dry. And no doubt he would appreciate a cup of tea, as well.”

“Miss Izzy!” Hamish went an even deeper shade of red, and his eyes bulged. “You canna mean to give him your home! Your father . . . your grandfather . . .”

“Hamish,” Isobel said firmly. “I cannot undo what Andrew has done. Baillannan apparently belongs to Mr. Kensington now.”

Hamish set his face mutinously, but finally he bobbed his head. “Aye, miss.”

He seized Kensington’s coat and hat, grabbed up the satchel at his feet, then went to speak to the servants, shooing them toward the kitchen.

Isobel turned back to their visitor in awkward silence, then rushed to speak. “I apologize that your room is not ready.”

“No, no need to apologize. Indeed, I should do so for the shock I have given you. I thought Sir Andrew would have written, but no doubt his letter has not had time to reach you.”

“No doubt. If you will excuse me . . .” She gave him as close to a smile as she could muster and turned away.

“No, wait.” He followed her to the foot of the staircase. “Please.”

Isobel stopped on the stairs and turned reluctantly to face him. He was a step below her, so that his head was level with hers, only inches away. His eyes, she realized, were not black or brown as she had thought, but a dark blue, shadowed by thick black lashes. The odd color, combined with the high slash of his cheekbones, gave his face a faintly exotic look. She found it unsettling.

“Are you—I’m not entirely sure I understood what that fellow said, but it seemed—are you related in some way to Sir Andrew?”

“I am his sister.”

“His sister!” His eyes widened. “I’m sorry. Sir Andrew never mentioned . . . I didn’t know . . .”

“There is no reason you should.” This time she could not manage even an attempt at a smile. Whirling, she ran up the stairs.

“Isobel?” Her aunt stood outside the door of the sitting room, looking a trifle lost.

Isobel pulled up short, barely suppressing a groan. Aunt Elizabeth’s memory had been growing hazier the last few months, and Isobel had found that any unexpected occurrence tended to make her condition worse. But Isobel was not sure she could explain the situation calmly when she felt as if she might shatter into a storm of tears herself.

“Isobel, who was that man? Was he talking about Andrew?” Her aunt’s face brightened. “Is Andrew here?”

“No. Andrew is in London. Or at least I suppose he is, since he has not bothered to write.”

“He is so careless that way.” Aunt Elizabeth smiled indulgently. “Of course, young men have better things to do than write home.”

“He might have thought of something besides himself for once.”

“Isobel? Are you angry with Andrew?”

“Yes, I am.” She added, softening her tone, “A bit.” She couldn’t give in to her feelings in front of Elizabeth.

“But why was Hamish upset? Who is that man?”

“He knows Andrew. I—he is staying here for a time.”

“Oh. How nice—a visitor. He was quite a handsome young man, I thought.” Elizabeth’s eyes gleamed speculatively, and for a moment she seemed like her old self. “It will be good for you to have someone your own age here.”

“Don’t.” Isobel felt as if she might choke. “Please, don’t try to matchmake. It’s impossible.”

“Nonsense. Now come in and sit down and tell me all about him.”

“I cannot.” Isobel pulled away, ignoring the faint hurt in her aunt’s eyes. “I will come back later and tell you everything I know. But right now I must go. I—I have to fetch something. From Meg.”

Her aunt frowned. “Meg?”

“Meg Munro, Auntie; you know Meg. Coll’s sister. Their mother Janet was Andy’s wet nurse.”

“Of course I know Meg.”

The vagueness in Elizabeth’s gray eyes made Isobel doubt her aunt’s words. I cannot bear it, she thought.

“I must go,” she repeated, and fled down the hall without looking back.

Inside her bedroom, Isobel closed the door and sagged against it. She wasn’t sure how she had gotten through it without breaking down. Her knees were jelly, her hands trembling. She heard the sound of footsteps and voices in the hall outside her door as Hamish and the Englishman walked past, a bitter reminder that her home was gone.

Not just the house she had grown up in, but the loch, the earth, the rocks and caves, every inch of this land and its wild, harsh beauty. Her very life was tumbling down around her, ripped away by her young brother’s folly. Even her beloved aunt was being taken from her bit by bit each day, her mind retreating.

She could not hold back a sob. Grabbing up her cloak, she ran from the room, tearing down the stairs and out into the yard as if pursued by devils.

Repeat of another Candice Camp book
By Avid Indy Reader
I was excited when I learned CC had a new book out. I bought the Kindle version through my husband's account. The good news is that I liked Jack and Isobel. Bad news is the reason is that they and the plot seemed awfully familiar to CC's book, Bitterleaf, which is a far superior book (and the first book I ever read from her). I realize these books are boy meets girl, conflict, gradual resolution with a little action in them, but these two books were way too similar.

SPOILERS AHEAD:
This book: Jack wins the land and is a bit of a scoundrel, and marries Isobel initially for personal gain.
Bitterleaf: Jeremy lands at the plantation as an indentured servant. He agrees to marry Meredith for personal gain.

This book: Someone tries to kill Jack and Isobel.
Bitterleaf: Someone tries to kill Jeremy and Meredith.

This book: After Jack is wounded and stuck in bed, they make love.
Bitterleaf: After Jeremy is wounded and stuck in bed, they make love.

Even the scene and dialogue and the way Isobel/Meredith make love to their respective men is very, very similar.

This book: A family member is the would be killer.
Bitterleaf: A family member is the would be killer.

A very "bitter" disappointment.

Really? Is this really Candace Camp?
By RomanceEscape
It's not often that I write a review, but having been a faithful Candace Camp fan, I felt like I just had to in this case. The pace of this book was just so slow. I absolutely had no problem putting it down, where as in the past I've always read her books within a day or two. This book took me a week. The overall plot of the story is what drew me in, but the way it was carried out just felt so disjointed. The dramatic sections felt rushed and hastily put together. The ending was very anticlimactic as well. I thought to myself, "That's it? All that build up and that's it?". Candace is a great author, but her recent works haven't engaged me as much as her past books. If you're a Candace Camp fan, by all means read it, however, if not I would pass.

B rating...
By Smitten with Reading
My Review:
It's been a long time since I've read a Candace Camp book, but back when I used to read historical romances regularly (many, many moons ago) she was on my auto-buy list, so I was pretty excited to see if her writing still appealed to me now. Short answer...it does.

I liked this book. I enjoyed the premise and the relationship between Jack and Isabel. I adored the Scottish vistas and scenery that Ms. Camp described so incredibly well. I felt like I was walking along the cliffs and in the castle ruins along with the characters and it was like a mini-vacation on my couch for me.

I really enjoyed Jack as a character. He was a great balance of great guy vs. one who feels he's not really worthy of Isabel. He's a gambler that won Isabel's home from her brother in a card game, not realizing that it was the family home and that he'd be putting out Isabel and her aunt. He felt the perfect amounts of remorse about that alongside the fact that he is the owner of the house now. I liked their bargain between the two of them and felt like that whole part of the story was very believable. My one complaint was that Jack was put into the "damsel in distress" situation just a few too many times for me to be happy since he's supposed to be the hero in the book, not the heroine.

There is more of the story that is written from Isabel's point of view, but I didn't feel like I got to know her that well. Most of her story delves into the mystery and her determination to keep her home and it's crofter's safe. There wasn't quite as much about her history...at least that's the way it feels in retrospect. I just don't feel like I got to know her and her emotions as well as I did with Jack.

I really loved the whole mystery of the treasure along with the castle ruins and caves systems. I don't know where the series is going from here, but I'm hoping that this isn't the end of the treasure story line.

I don't read historical romance very often, but this was nice for a little change of pace. Candace Camp still writes a great story and I enjoyed my little "visit" to the Highlands thanks to her.

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

As shaman, he must prepare the way for his successor, who will be chosen through ancient rituals designed to reveal true character. As Wicasa, he can only wait for signs from the Great Spirit to know if one will replace him to lead the people in spirit during this trying time.

While traveling homeward following a quest that had taken him far from his ancestral mountains, he receives a vision from the Grand Father telling him the name of the next Wicasa: Flaming Eagle, a name he does not recognize. He knows the four young men who are candidates to become shaman and must consider their achievements and character as they strive for manhood. Although plagued by emotions regarding the unknown, White Wolf strives to maintain balance with nature while honoring the traditions passed down through the ages as he prepares the way for the next generation of his tribe. Meanwhile, he and his tribe must deal with the ever-present terrorism of nearby savages as well as the foreboding specter of the future invaders.

Set in the early history of native North Americans, this novel presents a complex view of a society in which White Wolf and Flaming Eagle must strive to be worthy of their people beyond their roles as warriors and providers."

YES! Fantastic book that reminds you why and what to be grateful for - quick Saturday read in the park!
By Andrea
I loved this book - absolutely LOVED it - for several reasons:
1. It was a fantastic reminder about all the things I'd read about before and had forgotten - i.e. Why to be grateful. Who has control over my life. Why reactions are more important than the circumstances we face.
2. It was a quick, leisurely read on a Saturday afternoon. This book is best enjoyed over the course of an afternoon (give yourself about 4-5 hours) with a pen, highlighter and notepad close by. Picnic optional.
3. This book gives action items and resources to continue the path to happiness - who doesn't love action items?! This book is filled with substance and direct examples that I can use in my own life. I actually feel more efficient for having read "How To Live Remarkably"
4. I could go on, but I will conclude with saying, this book provided me with instantaneous gratitude for what I have in my life. It also made me realize how to be more self aware of my reactions to my circumstances.

Passes the Indoor Bike Test!
By Francie VW
Ah, a man after my heart. Of course this conqueror of mediocrity is interested in continuous improvement. Of course I am interested in living remarkably.

Good nonfiction authors get to the point, excellent nonfiction authors get to the point using do it with relevant, experiential examples. In How to Live Remarkably, Steve Gallegos demonstrates he is an excellent nonfiction author. Normally, I review books on Goodreads, and judge them on holding my interest while I ride my bike indoors on the Computrainer. Although I didn't read this book while riding my bike on the Computrainer, I could. That's saying a lot, because riding inside is boring and tedious. Any read that has the slightest weakness can't survive. How to Live Remarkably caught my interest, and you've got me thinking on how I can be better. The reviewer named Debbie was correct; this could be a great book used in a corporate book club or peer group.

Review
'Back to the Black' is written from the heart by a man who has been there. If you think you're the only person who's struggling to cope with debt, he'll show you that you're not and help you find ways to put your problems behind you. But only if you want to, of course. Getting out of debt is not easy. It will take self-discipline and sacrifice. If you're ready for that challenge then read on - and I wish you the greatest success.- Simon Read, Personal Finance Editor of The Independent newspaper

From the Author
Why have I written this book? Put simply: a few years ago I went through a severe debt crisis. I had turned a blind eye to the problem and came very close to bankruptcy. With the help and support of friends and of a few professionals (one of whom happened also to be a friend) I eventually came through the experience without permanent scars to my spirit and credit rating. After I had managed to clear my debts and get back to the black, I decided to write a book from the perspective of someone who has been there, had the problem and found a way through it.

I want to share what I learned from my experiences. If what I've written helps you to get out of debt, this book will have served its purpose.

Sound advice
By Helen Baggott
Reading Michael MacMahon's book, it occurred to me how lucky I've been. Apart from a mortgage I've never owed more than I could afford to clear. That's a great ethic, but it's reaffirmed in this book how often getting into debt is beyond a person's control. Illness, loss of a job, death of a partner - all are beyond our control.

I'm not sure if, when you're overwhelmed by financial problems, your first reaction is to read a book. But it should be. I suspect the success of this particular book will be in it being bought to share - by a friend or family member who recognises someone in need of help.

The book is immensely readable. It doesn't patronise, it offers good advice that can be acted upon immediately.

I received a copy of this book from the author - in return for an honest review.

Useful and practical guide
By Kew
This is a well-researched and practical guide to help you solve any debt problems that you may have. Although the book has been written in the UK, the pricipals apply to where ever you are in the world and the author does include some indication of the sums in dollars or euros.

The author is able to write at first hand experience about this problem as he was himself in debt some years ago, so he fully understands the stress and difficulties involved. In fact, some of the first advice in the book deals with how to deal with that stress before you start to tackle the issues of what to do about the debts. He offers a number of options to help you decide what course to take - eg. to go bankrupt or not to go bankrupt, or how to negotiate a deal for yourself. He includes a number of case studies to help illustrate the situations and sums up each chapter with a brief resume of the points covered. At the end of the book he has provided a list of useful resources that people may wish to call on for help - government bodies, websites, organisations and charities.

Comprehensive and Practical
By alan
This is a great book, well-written and enjoyable to read. Full of practical ways to get yourself out of debt - and then stay in the black. I loved the case studies - helps to know that people have managed to deal with worse situations! The author urges us to get clear about where we are financially, and to start doing something about it. There is a comprehensive resource section at the back, and the sample letters at the back was a nice surprise - so often we don't tackle problems because we don't know where to start, having these templates makes it much easier. If you have issues with debt, get this book and sort it out now.

Travel through the twisting, grinding and bumpy road of life demands frequent introspection and self interrogation. Pausing, reflecting, revisiting the route, examining the effect of your words and actions and doing a course correction is essential if you wish to craft a remarkable legacy worth emulating.
Philip Young was very proud of his background but was haunted by the fear of failure. His frantic clutch at security and his desperate longing for the comfort zone is remindful of our own certain tight spots in life.
What happened during that day’s travel and immediately thereafter that prompted a mysterious change in Philip which forty odd years couldn’t? What was the treasure buried between the ears of a taxi driver and the wealth that lay in the pages of a book?
Experience the saga of the journey Philip Young was so sceptical about, the company of a taxi driver that was barely exciting to start with, and a book he carried merely to see him through the idle hours of the journey.

his superior competency at work results in an inflated ego
By Shilpa Iyer
Vineet Bhatt’s first novel is a treasure trove of nuggets of wisdom.
This story, dazzling in its powerful simplicity and inspiring wisdom, is about an American corporate executive assistant Philip Young, who travels much against his wishes from his homeland in New York, to revive a sagging informational technology sector branch of his company in Kolkata, India.
Although he grudgingly accepts his new environment along with his wife Rose, his initial success with his Indian colleagues, his superior competency at work results in an inflated ego, which creates “a gap” with his team whose admiration and reports often appear fake and labored. Thus, the business deteriorates further with the board of directors questioning his competence and propose closing down their overseas operations. Philip suddenly receives word from headquarters in New York, and is asked to travel from Kolkata to Bhubaneshwar, to discuss the updates and future of the company.
With much trepidation in his heart and no answers to provide, he decides to travel by road and strikes up simple yet inspiring conversations with his Taxi driver Feroz, a simple man in his late twenties, with an effervescent personality, all of whom point Philip in the right direction of his much needed personal transformation.
No one knows, if Philip will be able to surmount the obstacles and turn the tables of losses into huge sustainable profits in his business right away. But what starts out as a journey to find answers on how to turnaround a sagging business in a foreign land, turns into a discovery of the inner treasures found within and the process of the much needed personal transformation to make this journey.
Lush with scenes of Indian landscape and diaspora, heart-felt deep observations of the mysterious of Nature, and deeply sensitive nuggets of wisdom, the story of Philip is an eternal testament to the transforming power of our belief coupled with the importance of listening leading to self-improvement and growth. There are some wonderful quotes within this book that are worth framing and placing on our desks to remind us of how much we have to learn about life. This easy-to-read book is an opportunity for much-needed personal introspection in today’s mad rat race. Reading through makes one feel like a cow chewing the cud to reflect at our own pace the importance of living for others, and what we do for others live forever, while what we do for ourselves only fades with us.

A philosophical novel
By Mona Verma
The Rear-View Mirror is a brilliant novel which compels you to reexamine your life and explore its true meaning. It tells the story of Philip Young, who along with his wife Rose has left the comfort of their New York life to take over the company's deteriorating business at the Kolkata branch. The business there is failing, Philip is struggling to adapt and just when he is melancholic and broken and wants to hang up his hat and leave, the story takes a dramatic turn. The taxi ride to Bhubaneswar to attend a company meeting is an enlightening and life changing experience for Philip. The taxi driver Feroze is talkative and endearing, complete with a Shahrukh Khan ponytail and flashy clothes, and he is upbeat, charming and positive, despite his personal misfortunes. The writer describes India and Indians with accurate and perceptive details and also highlights the ills facing the country along with subtle hints on how these problems can be solved. I could visualize the lush landscape of India , the slums, the traffic, the roads, the innocent villagers and more as the language is lucid and descriptive. Each chapter delivers a philosophical message and in the end the pieces of the puzzle fit together for Philip who is able to come to a resolution. Just when I thought the story had ended, the last chapter delivers a shocking blow which only makes you realize that despite all the problems we face and the difficult decisions we have to make, being alive is a miracle and a blessing and we should make the most of it.

He does not hold any degrees and diplomas but has a superior understanding of life than Phillip
By Amazon Customer
The book takes its reader on a journey of life. It compels one to stop, think and reflect. An amazingly involving book with vivid descriptions of Kolkata, the highway, it transports the reader to the places the taxi travels through. You feel the bump on the roads, hear the noise around the taxi, and taste the paan. You ride the emotional roller coaster with Phillip; feel his insecurity, his dilemma, his indecision, his arrogance at the deference shown by his team. The characters are well developed and continue to grow through the book. Feroze, with his ideals, makes the reader realize that individuals are responsible for their actions and just because everyone does it doesn’t make it right. Feroze makes us see the difference between education and literacy. He does not hold any degrees and diplomas but has a superior understanding of life than Phillip, a graduate from a prestigious American university. It makes one realize that anything and everyone can be a source of learning; that education is an on-going process and does not stop with the degree certificate. What Feroze teaches Phillip, and through Phillip, the readers, cannot be taught in any school. All in all an engaging book with lots of messages without being preachy.
