Underneath These Skirts

The self-assertive style of the author, Njoki wa Maitha, harmoniously fuses with my perception of Kenya as a country changing its social fabric, dismantling some taboos and improving the social outcomes at a fast pace. I have knowledge of some female writers from Kenya, who have the subtlety of the African spirit, and the philosophy of the ancestors.
Njoki's flight of mind reaches in the book the land of evergreen pieces of life like love, lovemaking, friendship...
Strong declarations, like "I hated poverty, as much as I hated religion," disrupt the storytelling and bring to light the sense of life that is deeply rooted in past dramatic experiences and search for self-identification.
The author employs slight deviations from the main line to shed light on traditional, typical behaviours, like that of the father who is never smiling or making compliments.
A piece of poetry by the end of the first Chapter is striking with curious beauty, inspiring to read more...

Interesting Book

Underneath these Skirts by Njoki Wa Maitha is a story of a real life situation that happens to quite many. Its quite interesting as it gives a story of an ordinary girl named Neema who happens to be strong willed, no nonsense, courageous and a very adorable girl. The story narrates how Neema goes to college but her life is ruined by Dru who makes her pregnant. Having multiple challenges, Neema is in a dillemma whether to get rid of the baby but miscarriages before making any move. Only to note the pregnancy was heterotropic. Abandioned by her family, she goes to live with Dru and manages to move on and live a normal life. Only to realize that she went home with another woman's child after birth during her graduation day.
The story is quite educative and gives an insight of what exactly happens in the society and is untold. The story educates young girls and parents on how best to maintain a healthy but still disciplined relationship.

The makings of an interesting tale...

I can see where the author was trying to go with this book and believe they might have the makings of an interesting story there. However, there were glaring errors which really put me off.
The English is really quite bad, with words missing, inappropriate words and words such as 'sitted' which is not part of English language - 'sat' would be the appropriate word in this case.
A good proofreader could have corrected these mistakes and made all the difference to the book.
I didn't find the story or characters very believable, in particular the main character. The way she interacted with other people didn't ring true and seemed to go against everything she stood for.
I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.
