Not my kind of hero or book...
By Fielding367
In the interest of full disclosure, I am a friends of Crow's. But, I am also an avid reader. If I were to have hated this book I would tell him personally and not written a review at all.

I read this book fully prepared to hate it. It's not my typical genre. I like spy thrillers, mystery, sci-fi fantasy, historical or fairytales. If I read general fiction, I prefer funny to factual. In this book, Crow introduces us to Frank and his daughter Penelope, there are also repeat characters from his first two books like Jaden and the sociopath Greg. I didn't read his first two books, but I didn't I missed out on anything and Crow didn't bother to recap the other two books, which I'm glad, because that always feels like a subliminal plug, by authors, to buy their other books.

At 23%, I thought, Frank is a weirdo. By 50%, I was frustrated by the teacher and wanting to attend the next teacher conference. At 75%, I was appalled by the entire "system." Crow took me from thinking, "Wow, Frank has all the markings of a sociopath!" to thinking "Frank is a great person! What's wrong with you people?"

Frank is ugly, huge, tatooed (not the sexy, brooding tatooed hero of romance novels), hears voices, smokes around his daughter, definitely not father of the year kind of hero. He is a convicted felon with a history of violence. Seriously??? What is there to like?

Crow challenged me to look past my stereotypes and prejudices to get to know Frank abd Penelope. He also challenged me to not blindly accept societal experts that tell you red is green and it is just our perception is off. In the end, Crow made me feel that I am Frank. I wanted to rush into Raleigh and offer them my home and defend them personally.

So, 5 Stars, because Crow convinced me that the scariest guy in a biker bar was actually a hero. Great job!

Terrifying- mystical and realistic
By A. Sloan
The author is clearly coming into his literary stride with this 3rd novel. The first few chapters ease you into the story, are well crafted, and deceptively lull the reader into a tentative quiet. Trauma is lurking, however, and there are bursts foreshadowing the darkness to come. Soon, the story led to one of the most vividly terrifying tales I've read. While the author's 1st book relied heavily on imaginary terror, the real fears evoked in this book were much more horrifying.

I enjoyed the use of some mystical devices which allowed the author to show the reader things happening behind the surface, as we're allowed to see people and things as they truly are. Midway thru the book I felt as if some of the characters were not always acting consistently with themselves and felt a bit artifical pushed forward in the story as the reader. The conclusion, though, while not easy or pleasant, was satisfying. The first third and final section were the best developed and my favorites.

If you've ever wondered what monsters hide behind a smiling face, been curious to see an inside glimpse of the worst case scenarios in child "protection," or wondered how it is that good is called evil and evil good...then this book is for you!

Something Different
By Sancho Panzo
Crow gets better with each of his books. They are the oddest blend of horror, crime, thriller I have ever read. His protagonists are strange broken characters whose very existences challenge the status quo thinking about many of our so called respectable institutions. Each story is original, but also linked to previous stories.
