The bombing of an atomic lab in Ohio and a mistaken killing in Southeast Asia set off this roller-coaster mystery set in the 1990s at the cusp of the Internet age. The ride begins when college instructor Graham Bell tries to connect with a wary salon worker calling herself Linda Chapman. Then the flirtation turns deadly when Chapman disappears and a SWAT team invades his house hunting Tori DaMantova, the Antigone bomber. Investigators stun Bell when they find DaMantova’s fingerprints in his house. Bell uncovers information, however, that casts DaMantova in a different light and sets out to find her. One step ahead of her pursuers, the instructor tracks DaMantova across the country to land himself in the middle of an incident far bigger and more sinister than he could have imagined. What began as an attempt to find Tori DaMantova takes him into a menacing underworld after an elusive Eurydice.

Location, Location, Location!

Readers searching for a Dan Brown-ish type thriller would do well to open the "pages" of this e-reader. Chasing Antigone is a fast-paced adventure novel that will appeal to anyone buzzed by `sixties activism, literary allusions, spy novels, and intriguing musical references. As a former librarian, I can recommend Hirst's e-novel as a suspenseful nonstop travelogue of mysterious exploits that carry the reader from Vietnam to Ohio to Michigan to Arizona and California.

Akin to a Dan Brown protagonist, Hirst's narrator Graham is a university scholar who chases after a Woman With A Past (aka Linda the hairdresser). As her agenda of secrets increases, his mystification and fascination with this woman grows until he is irrevocably drawn into her struggle and her former life. First entranced and then enlisted, Graham follows a trail of clues as Linda becomes Tori, and we fall victim also to the author's spell, following the brisk and breathless pace. With a book title like Chasing Antigone, readers can expect this modern tragedy to have its Greek allusions. Indeed, the story opens with a Bible-quoting hitchhiker who takes on the role of a Greek prophet to foretell the action and issue warnings. As a kind of Greek chorus to our reading, his sudden reappearances on the sidelines keep us apprised and in tune with the action. Like the grieving Antigone of the Greek classic, Linda/Tori has a brother slain on the battlefield of Vietnam; it's his death she seeks to honor. Linda/Tori is a radical who, like the rebellious Greek Antigone, refuses to play by the rules. A series of unexpected risks leads to the harsh ordeals experienced by the two main characters as they rush toward denouement. As in the ancient Greek play, enough punishment brings wisdom, and so the conclusion brings it to the reader as well as the protagonists!

Readers familiar with the locales will enjoy spotting landmarks and insider references to Miamisburg OH, Marquette MI, and Flagstaff AZ. A big draw for me was in the accurate descriptions of places like Mound Laboratories, Thill's Fish House, and the Snowbowl, not to mention detailed Vietnam war memories, all of which add to the verisimilitude of the writing. A glance at the author's bio from his web page and various published articles reveals that he successfully followed the philosophy to "write what you know" of an exciting multitude of locales to make this story come to life. If I may, I will borrow and rephrase an old adage of realtors for this reader's review. There are three things that matter in successful novels of "place": location, location, location. This novel has them.

Old Friend from PC Liberia writes a great novel
By andy hanson
My interest in this book is selfish. I know the author yet I cannot get my head around the fact that this story moves me back into an era that I smoked my way through, and the book woke me up.
Finished this ebook in two phases, months apart. But as I read I got wound into the story as if I were reading a Times
best seller. It is not my habit to read through something staring at my computer. Rather I want to be comfortable. Yet this tale sat me done and kept me here for 7 hours straight in my second phase. I had to lap up the story and not miss a word.
Following the main character from Vietnam, through San Francisco to the upper peninsula of Michigan and then back down to the San Francisco peaks in Arizona this story zips through a time period that many of my age remember well and still have trouble with the outcomes. We all suffered as Mr. Bell does through different but in no small way similar
events.
This is a very good story it captures you early and does not let go. Tracing the life of this man does in no small way but help to raise ideas and feelings about the whole period of action. I was taken back to the whole insanity of the Nixon era, and alerted to how we got to the state we are in today with the revelations of Mr. Snowden. The paranoia of the past is right back in our face today under different guises. Reading Chasing Antigone has helped me see clearer into the coming times.
