Morality Tale Under the Guise of Detective Fiction
By Matt Burns
Before even beginning to read DEVIL'S DANCE, I noticed a not-so-positive review on Amazon saying that the book didn't quite live up to the "standards" set by LOSER'S TOWN and BABYLON NIGHTS. This made me a little wary about investing my time in reading the third Spandau installment. However, being a lover of Hollywood novels and a writer of them myself, I couldn't resist reading it. And I'm glad I did!

Not only did DEVIL'S DANCE live up to the standards set by its predecessors, but I actually think it ended up exceeding them. Granted, it's been a while since I read BABYLON NIGHTS and even longer since I read LOSER'S TOWN, but I thought DEVIL'S DANCE took its depth and philosophical content one step further than the other novels, which, to some readers who care more about plot and mystery-for-mystery's-sake, may not have been a good thing. DEVIL'S DANCE has a great plot and the way the mysteries unfold make it very difficult to put the book down, but I personally want more than good plot and mystery and this is why I really appreciated the complexity of the novel's characters and their varying philosophical outlooks on life.

Take the character of Atom, for example. Rather than make him the typical one-dimensional, evil incarnate type-of-character, we learn how such a destructive nature took form, mainly from an intense trauma that involved the witnessing of his Armenian brothers' beheadings and subsequent desecration of their bodies by Chechens. Atom is essentially a monster born out of the Armenian genocide. He emphasizes that he believes in God but he hates God because He allows such heinous atrocities to happen in the world, like what occurred with his brothers. What kind of being could create humanity and allow such awful things to happen in it?

In Atom's eyes, God is a sick - pardon my Japanese - f*%#, so he essentially chose to be bad to spite Him. He may not even believe it at the core, but Atom keeps telling himself and others that it's a dog-eat-dog world where people are just "meat" with no soul worth respecting and you're a sucker if you believe otherwise. This is certainly a warped outlook and his acting like a victim of God is a copout for his immorality, but we can still understand where he's coming from and why he's acting the way he does. The concept of sympathy for the devil comes to mind; Atom is a broken victim of an intense childhood trauma and that's why he is the way he is.

Atom's description of the world as a messed up place is, indeed, very accurate and, as we read the novel, we see how truly messed up it is (particularly Hollywood). There's no doubt that the world is severely troubled. But the question is how a person should react to it, which is perhaps the true meaning behind the human condition and the dilemma Spandau struggles with throughout the novel. For Atom, his reaction is to wallow in his victimization and be as immoral as the world presents itself because there's no point to being moral in an immoral, dog-eat-dog world. Might as well be a shady loan shark that takes advantage of weak people, make lots of money and not be a sucker who honors a soul that doesn't exist. At least, that's what he keeps telling himself.

Atom's destructive outlook is later contrasted with Walter's (Spandau's boss) more passive philosophical perspective . Where Atom presents an immoral philosophy, Walter presents the amoral philosophy when he tells Spandau that all you can do in the messed up world is do your job; this is the only way to remain focused and grounded in an unreality (Hollywood) of confusions and illusions. This philosophy makes a lot more sense than Atom's. In fact, Spandau and perhaps the reader are almost convinced that this - lets call it - morally indifferent philosophy may be the best way to go. Then again, in response to Walter's philosophy, Spandau makes a reference to "Eichmann and the banality of evil". The reference alludes to Nazi officers who used the 'I was just doing my job' excuse to justify their atrocities during the Nuremberg trials. Maybe amorality doesn't work either.

A bit later in the novel, a third philosophical outlook is presented with the character of Father Michael who says the amoral "do your job" philosophy is yet another copout. Instead, Michael says that all you can really do in the confusing world is "do the right thing", meaning do whatever you feel is morally correct at the time, which sometimes is at odds with what a person has to do as part of their job.

In the end, I personally found Father Michael to be one of the most enlightening of characters. When it came to the whole "judge not, lest ye be judged" Matthews 7:1 passage, I have to admit that I understood its meaning in the same way Spandau did: basically, don't judge people unless you want to be judged yourself. Father Michael, however, reminds Spandau that the passage is often misunderstood and it's essentially another way of wording the "golden rule", meaning judge people with the same judgement that you would want cast on yourself. In other words, measure people's actions by the same standards that you would measure your own.

Michael's explanation of the true meaning of Matthew 7:1 and his issues with the non-judgmental "I'm ok, you're ok" world insinuates that a core problem at the root of the messed-up world (Hollywood in particular) is that there isn't enough judging going on. Maybe there needs to be more shaming when it comes to people and their blatantly immoral actions. Maybe that's the only way things will change for the better.

It's important to remember, however, that Father Michael (even though he's named after an Archangel, which, incidentally, is contrasted with Atom who's named after a weapon of mass destruction), is not God and his character is simply providing yet another worldview to be considered along with those of the other characters in the morality tale that is Devil's Dance. It's up to Spandau and also the readers to decide which philosophical outlook is best to adopt as their own. Rather than shoving any particular worldview down anybody's throat, the morality novel simply gets you thinking about different philosophical perspectives and that's what is so great about DEVIL'S DANCE. It's also what makes it stand apart from most commercial detective fiction.

So...all of the above is another way of me saying that I highly recommend reading this book. It's perhaps the best Spandau novel yet. They seem to only be getting better and I'm looking forward to the next one.

Hollywood Life and Crimes
By andrew review
This is the third Daniel Depp thriller I've read. I've enjoyed each of them. However, this one contains more philosophical insight than the previous two . The protagonist spends a lot of time trying to examine himself and his weaknesses as he lunges through the underbelly and the high lives of Hollywood. Fortunately Depp is adept at this type of writing and it adds depth and texture rather than distracting from the story.

Fails to live up to the earlier two books
By Brian Baker
Depp's first two Spandau entries were sharp, edgy, somewhat satirical mysteries rooted in the Movieland sub-culture, affording us an insider's peek at the slime under the façade that is mythical "Hollywood".

Unfortunately, I didn't think this book lived up to that same standard.

I found the story line to be muddled; characters' actions were all over the map, with consistent inconsistencies. Spandau seemed somehow "diluted", less grounded than in the earlier books, less forceful. Easier to distract and push around. Less decisive. I actually found some of the secondary characters, particularly Pookie and Leo, far more entertaining than the protagonist.

Pretty disappointing. Hopefully Depp will be able to get back on track next time.
