With an eye for quirky detail, Helen W. Mallon presents four lively characters who are each, in different ways, on a blindfolded hunt for intimacy. Izzy, the burned-out mother of twins in Did You Put the Cat to Bed? tries to provoke her clueless husband by painting the town red. In ‘You Say You Want a Revolution,’ Sarah, a motherless child of the ’70’s, flaunts her sexual liberation, refusing to admit she’s being used by an older man. Casual Day at the Crazy House celebrates the everyday side of craziness as Olivia tries to get her dad to emerge from his new living quarters—the bathroom—in time to attend her high school graduation. In Indecent Exposure, Chip is a straitlaced man who wants to grieve his recently deceased father with a closed-mouthed dignity befitting the old war veteran. Instead, he is confronted by the revelation of his sister’s tell-all family memoir. Mallon puts pressure on her characters to explore the threads of intimacy by which we connect—and fail to connect—with those we love, and she finds our humanity most poignantly expressed in the spaces between.

What is in a name? Stories worth reading.
By Karen Daiter
I read through these stories in one sitting-- moving from one to the next, my curiosity tinged with trepidation. Helen moves from different voices with ease, letting her reader into the inner world of characters at moments that come to define aspects of their very nature. Most of her characters have a sense of innocence gone awry, their search for emotional connection or truth revealing their strengths and challenges in equal order. Her honesty strips her characters raw of protective trappings and her readers, like her characters, are cast into experiences that change them. These stories are unexpected and compelling.

Helen's stories reveal the hidden turmoil that lies just beneath ...
By Marjorie A Meyers
Helen's stories reveal the hidden turmoil that lies just beneath the calm surface. A new mother with a reliable husband and two health babies is suffocating in her "normal" family. A student thrilled by a grown up affair discovers that she is far more responsible and alive than the grown up. A proper Quaker family hides insanity in a bathroom and a grieving son, who has always been the proper one, deals with grief by doing something crazy. Each story makes you plumb your own ideas of satisfaction and ends with a surprise that makes you think some more.

A wonderful story collection with emotional resonance
By Kindle Customer
Helen Mallon is the go-to story-master for anyone seeking well-written, fun, quirky tales with emotional truth. Her writing is gorgeous. She deals with subjects such as the longing to connect and be loved, the urge to be seen and understood. I recognize these people. I run into them all of the time. My personal favorite is Casual Day at the Crazy House for its combination of comic-tragic hijinks. Highly recommended for anyone who wants insight on the human condition, a great short read and an author who you can consistently depend on to deliver the goods.
