Flickering Empire: How Chicago Invented the U.S. Film Industry tells the fascinating but too little known story of how Chicago served as the unlikely capital of film production in America in the years prior to the rise of Hollywood (1907--1913). As entertaining as it is informative, the book straddles the worlds of academia and popular non-fiction alike in its vivid illustration of the rise and fall of the major Chicago movie studios in the mid-silent era (principally Essanay and Selig Polyscope). Colorful, larger-than-life historical figures like Thomas Edison, Charlie Chaplin, Oscar Micheaux and Orson Welles are major players in Flickering Empire -- in addition to important but forgotten industry giants like 'Colonel' William Selig, George Spoor and Gilbert 'Broncho Billy' Anderson.

I was afraid that this would be written more like a reference book and luckily it's very accessible
By Jillian Mckeown
I live in Chicago, know zero about film history and I was able to grasp the information because of how the authors relate the facts in a more story-telling style, as opposed to a more technical style inherent in many books on history. I was afraid that this would be written more like a reference book and luckily it's very accessible. I am a public librarian and will definitely recommend to library patrons interested in film history and/or Chicago history.

If you are interested in reading about little-known corners of history, then you will like this book!
By The Reviewer Formerly Known as Kurt Johnson
Most histories of the U.S. film industry tell of the invention of movies by Thomas Edison, and then talks about the industry’s move to Hollywood, California. In fact, the story is a whole lot more complicated than that. Did you know that in the early days of movies, Chicago was the center of American movie-making? Did you know that the first movie stars worked in Chicago, and that most of the early genres and techniques were pioneered there? Probably you don’t, so you really need to read this book!
Yeah, I must say that I found this book to be a fascinating read. The author does a great job of telling the stories of the beginnings of movies, what happened where and why. If you are interested in early movie-making, then you really should read this book. Heck, I would never have said that I was a Hollywood-junkie, and yet I found this book really fascinating from just a historical viewpoint. There was so much that I did not know.
I really enjoyed this book, and think that you will too. If you are interested in reading about little-known corners of history, then you will like this book!

A new look at the history of film
By janice m. smith
This is an excellent work, very readable to non film persons. The attention to details is superb, even to points not associated directly to the narrative. The authors make a valid case for Chicago starting the film industry, and their research is voluminous and solid.
The manner in which the authors develop the main characters and their interaction with one another makes this book read like a novel.
Great read and very informative.
