Hatteras Island, North Carolina
1881

It shouldn't be long now, lass. We tack down the coast for another day or so. By late tomorrow we ought to be in Wilmington for sure."

"But that will put us to port at night, will it not?" Olivia Madison looked up at the burly sailor, her heart filled with dismay. She disliked arriving in the dead of night when darkness appeared ready to swallow ships and their unsuspecting crews. She also hated it for other reasons. Darkness had come when her parents succumbed to disease—her mother when she was a little girl and her father to a strange fever just a year ago. Then darkness had taken her only living family member, her twin brother, Nathan, arrested in the dead of night with no one there to help him. Darkness and light were not alike to her, despite what Scripture said.

Olivia refused to let her fellow sailors know her fear of darkness. Instead she stood tall like the main mast and tightened the belt that held up pants far too large for her slight frame. Olivia gripped a mast with one hand while shielding her eyes from the glare of the sun with the other. It had been a long journey, but she felt the end was near. The other crew members on board the schooner had performed their duties admirably, safeguarding passage across the vast ocean. Father had chosen his men well.

Tears sprang in her eyes when she thought of him. Broad-shouldered, able-bodied, but with a twinkle in his blue eyes, strength permeated his very being both as a ship's captain and as her father. Sadly he'd lacked the strength to overcome the fever that had claimed his life.

What had followed both amazed Olivia and helped ease her grief. The sailors who had worked for her father all left their ports of call to attend the funeral. Each of them pledged their devotion if ever she needed it. Now was that time, with Nathan's life at stake. Her brother had been imprisoned wrongly. And Olivia was taking this journey to help set him free.

"You're certainly quiet," commented a sailor named O'Malley. An Irish sailor on an English vessel seemed a great irony, but it was all Father's doing. He was no respecter of persons. He had always treated the Irish, the Scots and the English as if they were brothers. Father had united the men. No wonder the sailors loved him so.

More tears glazed her eyes, and she deftly wiped them away. "I only pray we will accomplish what we set out to do," she answered the man.

"We will, never fear. You have your father in you. You won't rest until this mission is done, and soon it will be." He patted her on the shoulder as a father would his daughter.

Several of her father's loyal sailors, including O'Malley, had answered her call for help in this venture. And so had others. In the crates concealed in the ship's bowels were family jewels and heirlooms, along with possessions given by wealthy friends, ready to pay off the rogue who'd imprisoned her dear brother. She tensed at the mere thought of the man who'd betrayed Nathan in a poor business deal. He had taken all the money, leaving Nathan with debts he could not pay. Now the dreadful debtor's prison was his lot, but not for much longer. Not if Olivia had anything to do with it.

She shook herself from her thoughts and considered the man before her, one of her father's favorites. "Are you still eager to see America, O'Malley?" she asked.

He grinned. "Of course! Not a sailor among us doesn't wish they could live there. The weeks we'll spend in Wilmington while you are visiting your uncle in Raleigh will be like a holiday to us."

Olivia wished she could share in the excitement. Instead a certain anxiety prevailed. America was a land she knew so little about. She'd heard many speak about it. It didn't seem so very different from England, though ports on this side of the Atlantic were few and far between. Now they sailed south along the Carolina coast of an endless sandy shore, nearing their goal and the completion of a long journey. They'd had but one storm to contend with, and even that wasn't so terrible.

Soon she would meet for the first time her only living relative besides her brother—her uncle, Dwight Browning. Dwight Browning was a prominent figure in the city of Raleigh, with many powerful people in his circle of friends. Informing him of Nathan's pitiful and increasingly sickly state, he'd urged her to come to America with the possessions she was able to gain through close friends and the wealth left in the estate. He would personally see to their sale and quickly raise the money needed to pay Nathan's debt.

I will do what needs to be done. Father would be proud if he were alive.

Olivia turned and headed below deck to the small cabin normally reserved for the captain. Inside the tiny room she knelt beside a large trunk and fumbled for the buckles. Resting atop the many belongings she carried from her native England lay her leather-bound journal, safely stored in oilskin in a box made of maple. She slowly slid back the top to the box and drew out the journal, eager to add another entry. Her heart fluttered. This time tomorrow her journal would boast of a triumphant landing at Wilmington, followed by her arrival in her uncle's company a week later. In a few months, God willing and with the work of her industrious uncle, she would revel in Nathan's freedom.

A knock came on the cabin door. Her maid, Alicia, opened it to find O'Malley with a grim look on his face. "The wind's changin', lass, and storm clouds are on the horizon. We may yet be delayed. So it 'tis with Providence in these things. We can only trust to His goodwill. Stay below deck."

Olivia quickly shut the trunk, even as Alicia stared with large eyes. The ship began to lurch. "Oh, miss, it's a storm!"

"It will be all right," she said as calmly as she could muster as the room swayed to and fro. Even now she doubted her own words. Please, God, we are but a breath away. Please let us arrive in safety!

Jacob Harris looked out over the ocean that churned with white-capped waves, the relentless salt water hungrily lapping the sandy beach. A misty fog rolled in with the waves. "I hope there's no ships out tonight, Jake. It looks like it could get rough," said Bodie, his fellow surfman in training.

Behind them, the glimmer of light from the lifesaving station's watchtower faded in the fog. Large raindrops splattered on them from thick clouds that hid the night stars. "We are definitely going to see a good storm," he agreed with his companion. "Come on. It's three miles to the substation. I'll show you what you need to do."

He felt in his pocket for the medal he would give to the surfmen of the next station, letting them know he and Bodie had done their part in the nightly beach patrol. But the brewing storm mirrored the personal storm within him. Earlier that day, he'd received the worst news possible. The lovely and fair Rose Leigh-ton, his lifelong friend and love, returned to him the silver thimble he'd given to her as a promise of marriage many months ago. Jake still winced when he remembered her words. "I will not be your wife, Jacob," she had declared.

Even now Jake could feel the small lump of the precious object in his breast pocket, beneath the heavy, oiled canvas coat he wore while on patrol. "Why?" he had pleaded with her. "I do not understand." He felt like a sailor in one of the shipwrecks, watching a rope slipping quickly out of his sweaty palms, sending him into the frothing ocean below.

"I can't bear the thought of you going out into the storm to save others," she had said. "You believe you are braving the seas, but you don't care that you could be hurt—or even drown." Her voice faded away. "I won't live with that kind of fear, thinking I could lose you."

He took some measure of comfort knowing that she cared whether he lived or died. Being the surf-man of a lifesaving station was dangerous, to be sure. But he had saved countless lives and cargoes without incident. Wasn't that worth some sacrifice? "Rose, please understand. My calling is to save others from drowning. I may sometimes need to risk my life, but others will die if I don't."

Rose had trembled at his words. "If the wind and storms can sink boats and kill people, think what it could do to you! And me. I could be a widow." She shook her head and turned away. "I'm sorry."

Jake shook himself out of his reverie, shuddering from the memory of Rose's words. Bodie cast him a curious glance as they swung their lanterns. They turned their gazes outward to the ocean, looking for any ships in distress.

"What's wrong?" Bodie finally asked. "You don't seem yourself."

Jake did not want to tell him what had happened with Rose and the embarrassment he felt. Yet he could not quell his friend's curiosity. He quickly explained the broken proposal.

"I'm sorry to hear that. I liked Rose."

"It doesn't matter," he said, searching for the words to lift his confidence. "I'm married to the sea anyway. It's the life I have chosen."

"Not me," Bodie said. "I'm not marrying no sea. I mean, I like this work so far, but I love Sally too much."

"Does she like that you're a surfman?"

"Of course. She thinks it's grand. She calls me her hero. She even likes the fact that I share the same name with the lighthouse up the coast there."

Jake winced. How he wished Rose had felt the same way. He paused to scan the distant horizon, and suddenly he saw something. A blink of a white light through the rolling fog. His fingers tensed around the handle of the lantern, which he raised higher in the darkness. All thoughts of Rose vanished at this telltale sign.

Bodie stood beside him, also scanning the ocean. "What's the matter? Do you see something?"

"I thought I saw a light flash. Can you make out anything?"

"Not really. It's too foggy."

Jake continued to stare. "There it is again! See that? It could be a passing ship or it could be one in distress. Take my lantern and hold them both high. The brightness will let them know where the shoreline is. I hope they saw your lighthouse up north warning them of the coastline."

Bodie's hands trembled as he held the lanterns high. "There it is again!" Jake exclaimed. "It's not far from the coast. I'll shoot off a signal, then we need to get back to the station and alert the others." He lit the Coston signal or flare he carried in a pouch while excitement and nervousness bubbled up inside him. "We need to inform the keeper." He began running back toward the station with Bodie right behind him. "I'm sure they saw it from the watchtower."

Bodie said nothing as he followed. When Jake saw the other surfmen readying the equipment, his fear was confirmed. He inhaled a sharp breath to calm his rapidly beating heart.

"We saw the signal, and the keeper gave the order," shouted Grayson Long, surfman number one. "The ship is lodged on the sand bar. It's close enough to use the beach apparatus. As it is, the seas are growing rough."

When another signal, white in color, pierced the bank of clouds hovering over the ocean, Jake knew that tonight they were called upon to save lives. Raindrops pelted him in the face, sending water dripping into his eyes. He brushed it away, thinking of the verse from a well-known hymn while the men worked to ready the equipment that would aid the ship:

Trim your feeble lamp, my brother Some poor sailor tempest tos't Trying now to make the harbor, In the darkness may be lost. Let the lower lights be burning, Send a gleam across the wave, Some poor fainting, struggling seaman, You may rescue, you may save.

A chill of anxiety coursed through him for an instant before being replaced by determination. Lord, I know now I could never ignore a life that might be saved in exchange for a hand in marriage. Even if it's the woman I love. His fingers slipped on the wet ropes as men yelled at each other, ready to shoot the line from the cannon out to the imperiled ship. This is what I'm called to do. This is all that matters. Lord, You saved others from death when You gave Your life. Can I do any less? The thoughts strengthened his resolve to do what mattered most. The troubled ship and its crew had made the decision for him.

Jake jumped when the Lyle gun fired, hurling shot and a line toward the distressed ship. He prayed the sailors there would know how to rig it so they could then feed the breeches buoy out to them. When the line turned taut, he sighed in relief.

Grayson slapped Jake on the shoulder. "They are ready for us to save them," he said.

The keeper signaled for him. "Jake, I want you to go out first," he said, pointing to the breeches buoy made of heavy fabric with strong lines that would feed him to the ship. Jake wasted no time doing as the leader asked. He wiped rainwater from his face as the storm beat down even harder and climbed into the breeches assembly. He soon felt himself being pulled out into the raging ocean waters. His feet caught in the waves. Water poured into his boots, pulling him downward against the fabric of the apparatus. He held on and squinted as he slowly approached the disabled schooner, caught on a rough sandbar that had likely torn a hole in the hull. Debris floated in the ocean as the ship listed to one side. His heart began to race. Little time remained before the vessel sank.

I was not disappointed in this newest story from Lauralee Bliss
By Melinda A Smith
I was not disappointed in this newest story from Lauralee Bliss. Learned about the lifesaving stations & techniques on the coast of North Carolina. The twist & mystery in the plot leaves you doubting the heroine's, Olivia Madison, story of the purpose of her voyage from England to N. Carolina. The hero, Jake Harris, was very human in his doubting of Olivia's innocence when evidence of piracy is brought against her. Quick story to read & a good historical.

A very well written book. A plot twist that leaves you doubting your own initial impression of the heroine. Full of intrigue, mystery and wonderfully wholesome. You'll not want to put it down. The author leaves the characters in a place that leaves you hoping for a sequel !

Fat thunderclouds rolled overhead and spat rain like machine gun fire as wave after wave battered Hadley Island's sandy beachfront. As it was on one of the barrier islands off the South Carolina coast, the sixteen-mile-long stretch of pristine shoreline was used to the abuse. Mother Nature's fury, however, was no match for the emotions roiling inside Brigit Wright.

Unmindful of the worsening storm, she continued to walk. In the pocket of the yellow rain slicker she wore, she fisted her hand around the already-crumpled piece of paper. Printing out the email hadn't changed its content.

Miss Wright, I will be arriving home the day after tomorrow for an extended stay. Please have my quarters on the main floor ready.—KF

Two curt sentences that still had her blood boiling.

Kellen Faust, heir to the Faust fortune, was returning—coming "home" as he'd put it—to continue his recuperation after the skiing accident he'd suffered four months earlier in the Swiss Alps.

If the news reports she'd read about his fall were even remotely accurate, then Brigit supposed she should feel sorry for him. Along with a concussion, dislocated shoulder and broken wrist, he'd snapped his ankle, mangled his knee and shattered the femur in his right leg. Four months out and the man was still in the midst of a long and very painful recovery. Even so, she didn't want him here while he did his mending, potentially meddling in the day-to-day minutia of running the exclusive Faust Haven resort. Brigit preferred to work without interference.

Kellen's family had a large home outside Charleston, as well as an assortment of plush real estate holdings sprinkled around Europe. Why hadn't he picked one of those places to do his recuperating? Surely they would be more accommodating to Kellen's large entourage and the other assorted sycophants who enabled his Peter Pan-like existence.

Why choose Faust Haven? This wasn't his home. It was hers, dammit! Just as Faust Haven was her resort, the name on the deed notwithstanding. While he'd spent the past five years hotfooting around Europe, living off what had to be a sizable trust fund and enjoying the life of the idle rich, Brigit had been hard at work turning a tired and nearly forgotten old-money retreat into a fashionable, five-star accommodation that offered excellent service and amenities and, above all else, discretion, in addition to its panoramic views. As such it was booked solid not only for the current calendar year, but for the next three. Brigit had made that happen. And she'd done so without Kellen's help.

Now the heir was returning and he wanted his quarters readied. His quarters? During the time she'd managed the resort, Kellen had never set foot on the island. It was Brigit's understanding that he hadn't visited the island since he was a boy. So she'd made the owner's private apartment on the main floor her own, and had turned the manager's rooms into a luxury suite that commanded a handsome sum.

Where was she going to sleep now? She might go to bed after most of the guests were tucked in for the night and rise long before they awoke, but that didn't mean she wanted to bunk on one of the overstuffed couches in the lobby or the big leather recliner in the library, no matter how comfy she found it to be for reading.

Muttering an oath that was swallowed by the wind, she stopped walking and looked back in the direction she had come. The cedar-shingled resort stood three stories tall—four, really, given the pilings that raised it another twelve feet above sea level to protect it from flooding. Natural sand dunes dotted with clumps of gangly grass buffered the structure from the worst of the Atlantic's abuse.

Home.

Kellen might refer to it as such, but for Brigit that truly was the case. It was here she'd come after her nasty divorce. Pride battered, feeling like an epic failure. The sea air, the sense of purpose, both had played a key role in ushering her back from the brink of despair.

Her gaze skimmed the balconies that stretched out from every room to maximize the view. Even though it was early afternoon, the lights burned brightly in the windows, beacons of welcome to any guests who had braved the worsening weather and boarded the last ferry from the mainland before the storm halted service. Once travelers reached the island, of course, they would still have to navigate the winding roads over the hilly center of Hadley Island to the eastern shore where the resort was situated. But even accounting for the slow going, those guests would be arriving soon.

With a sigh, Brigit headed back. She had a job to do and she would do it. Right now, her priority was to see that all new arrivals were comfortably settled in their rooms. Once that task was accomplished, she would work on figuring out her own accommodations for the duration of Kellen's stay.

By the time she reached the resort, any part of her body not covered by the slicker was drenched. She had hoped to have enough time to change into dry clothes and do something with her hair before the first guests arrived, but a full-size black SUV was pulling up under the covered portico at the main entrance as she came around the dune.

The driver hopped out, as did another man, who came around from the vehicle's passenger side. Both were big and burly. Bodyguards? It wasn't a surprise. A lot of the inn's guests were important people—Hollywood A-listers, business magnates, politicians. Before either man could reach for the handle, however, the rear passenger door swung open.

Brigit covered her mouth, but a gasp still escaped.

Kellen Faust. The heir was early.

She'd never met Kellen in person. They exchanged emails and texts a couple times a month, and occasionally a phone call. But he'd never come for a visit. Now here he was. In the flesh. And he wasn't at all what Brigit had expected.

Every photograph she had seen of him—and the guy turned up in print and online media reports with as much regularity as the tide—showed a handsome young man with sun-lightened brown hair, deep-set hazel eyes, a carefree smile and a body honed to perfection under what had to be the capable tutelage of a well-paid personal trainer.

Meanwhile, the man trying to exit the SUV's rear seat was thin, borderline gaunt, muscles withered away from long hours spent still and sedated. The dark smudges under his eyes made it plain he hadn't been getting much sleep as of late. He remained good-looking, but if his rigid posture and pinched features were any indication, he was far from carefree.

Vital, healthy, fit? None of the descriptions she'd seen in press clippings applied to the man now.

"I'll get the wheelchair, Mr. Faust," said the man who'd come around from the front passenger side.

"No! I'll walk," he bit out in an angry rasp that carried to Brigit despite the howling wind.

"But, Mr. Faust—" the driver began, only to be shouted down.

"I said I'll walk, Lou! I'm not a freaking invalid!"

Kellen swung his left leg out the door without too much effort, but when it came to the right one, he had to use his hands to manipulate the limb over the threshold. Then, lowering himself to the running board first, he eased to the ground. He held a cane in one hand. He used the other hand to grip the door frame. Unfortunately, neither support was enough to save him. A mere second after both of his feet hit the driveway, his right knee buckled. The man he'd called Lou caught Kellen under his arms before he hit the pavement. Ripe cursing followed. The other man rushed forward, as did Brigit, determined to help.

"Who in the hell are you?" Kellen bellowed, shaking off the hand she placed on his arm.

She pushed back her hood and offered what she hoped was a professional smile. Wouldn't it just figure that she looked her absolute worst for the occasion? Despite the rain slicker's hood, her hair was damp, and the bangs that she was three months into growing out were plastered against her forehead. As for makeup, she doubted the little bit she'd applied that morning lingered on her eyelashes and cheeks now. Her feet were bare, her calves spattered with wet sand. It was hardly the professional image she'd planned to portray when she first made his acquaintance.

"I'm Brigit Wright." When he continued to stare as if she were something to be studied on a slide under a microscope, she added, "We've spoken on the phone and via email for, well, several years. I manage Faust Haven."

That news elicited not a polite smile, but a snort that bordered on derisive.

"Of course you do." His gaze flickered down in seeming dismissal. Although he said it half under his breath, she heard him well enough when he added, "I had you pegged right."

So, the man had preconceived notions of her, did he? That didn't come as much of a surprise. And to be fair, she entertained plenty of her own where he was concerned. Still, it irked her that, after a mere glance, he could so easily marginalize her—both professionally and, she didn't doubt, personally.

Brigit cleared her throat and drew herself up to her full height of five foot six. Since he was hunched over, it put them nearly at eye level. When their gazes connected she didn't so much as blink. Using her most practiced "boss" tone, she told him, "I wasn't expecting you. Your email, which I received only this morning, said you wouldn't arrive until the day after tomorrow."

"I changed my mind."

"Obviously."

"I was in Charleston visiting…" His words trailed off and his expression hardened. "I'm here now. I trust that's not a problem, Miss Wright."

"None whatsoever," she assured him with a stiff smile. "I just wanted to explain that your quarters, well, they are not ready at the moment."

"Am I expected to wait out here until they are?" he demanded irritably.

Standing under the portico, they were protected from the worst of the rain, but the wind pushed enough of it sideways that it splattered them every now and again.

"Of course not," she replied as heat crept into her cheeks. What was she thinking, keeping a guest of his position, much less his current condition, out in the elements? She turned on her heel and marched toward the lobby entrance, calling over her shoulder, "Right this way, gentlemen."

Kellen didn't follow the ever-efficient Miss Wright inside to the elevator. Rather, he allowed Lou and Joe to half drag, half carry him in the direction of the door. He'd ticked her off but good. No surprise that, since he'd been so rude. Another time, he would have felt bad about the way he'd treated her. Unfortunately for her, both his usual good humor and his abundant charm had gone the way of his right leg. That was to say, fractured beyond repair. Or so the doctors claimed. They were wrong. They had to be. He couldn't spend the rest of his life like this…barely able to walk. A mere shadow of the healthy, active man he used to be.

The elevator doors opened after a bell dinged, announcing their arrival. The lobby looked different than he remembered from the last time he'd been to Faust Haven. Gone were the deep green, gold and maroon that had always struck him as more suited to a Rocky Mountains cabin than an ocean-side resort. Varying shades of blue and turquoise dominated the color scheme now, accentuated with weathered white and a pale yellow that reminded Kellen of sand. Overhead lights, along with the glow of table lamps, gave the lobby a warm, welcoming ambiance despite the storm that raged outside.

He exhaled slowly, and some of the tension left his shoulders. He remained a long way from relaxed, but he knew one thing for certain. He'd been right to come here.

He'd been second-guessing the decision to leave Switzerland ever since his plane touched down in Raleigh and the only one to greet him at the airport had been his mother's ancient butler holding a hand-lettered sign bearing Kellen's name. Orley hadn't changed much, but Kellen apparently had. The older man hadn't recognized him. Of course, it had been nearly a dozen years since Kellen had set foot in his boyhood home in Charleston.

And it had been longer than that since he'd been to the island.

He glanced around again. "This is…this is nice," he said to no one in particular.

"The remodeling was completed last fall. All of the guest rooms have been updated in a similar color scheme." She cleared her throat. Her tone was just this side of defensive when she added, "I emailed you numerous photographs."

He didn't remember the photos. He probably hadn't bothered to open the attachments. Too busy burning through his trust fund to care, he thought with a mental grimace. Well, he was done with that. In a way, the accident had forced his hand. He couldn't ignore his responsibilities any longer. It was time to put his degree to use and start earning his keep.

"They didn't do it justice," he murmured.

Nor, Kellen admitted, had the image he'd had in his head done her justice, despite what he'd just said about having her pegged.

For the past five years, he'd signed her paychecks, given the reports she'd dutifully sent on the first of each month a quick skim and approved her capital improvements—all while offering minimal input. This had been accomplished remotely. He'd never laid eyes on the woman to whom he'd entrusted what was now all that was left of to his birthright…until now.

She'd shed the old-man-and-the-sea rain slicker and stood in front of the reception desk wearing an aqua-blue polo shirt adorned with the inn's logo and a pair of white shorts that skimmed to mid-thigh. Nice legs—tanned, toned and surprisingly long for someone who probably topped out at five and a half feet. His gaze lifted to her waist, which was small, before rising to her breasts, which were just the right size to fill a man's hands.

Loved it just thought it was so good!

This is about Brigit who has been taking care of a resort only to find out that the owner of the resort is home and the resort is going to be occupied by more than just her. I really liked this book it was not only fun to read but you also can visualize her nerves when Brigit had free rein of the resort and now the boss is back. Now things aren't the way she thought and will she have to change rooms and so many thoughts were going thru my head as I was reading this book and I can't wait till Jackie's next one is out!

The Wheezer series continues to teach us Cherokee history
By Pat McGrath Avery
This third book in the Wheezer series is another winner. Sutton’s ability to simultaneously entertain and educate is apparent in each book. Wheezer and the Painted Frog portrays Sasa’s Cherokee family and people during and after the Trail of Tears. Wheezer and the Shy Coyote, the second book, brings Sasa into the ways of the white world when her guardian, Jackson Halley, gives her a home and an education.

In Wheezer and the Golden Serpent, Sasa is growing up. She travels to Boston with Jackson and his wife Anna, and her Jack Russell, Wheezer. A Mexican general seeks ways to secure his plan to take back Texas. Meanwhile Sasa debuts in society with no idea that a piece of jewelry given to her by an old Indian friend will lead to danger.

Sutton hopes to teach readers about Cherokee history and the role they played in our society. As Sasa learned the ways of white society in Boston, unrest continued in the west and in Mexico. Greed and the struggle for power continued to haunt Sasa and her people. Indians were blamed for the raids taking place along the Texas border, but tribal chiefs denied it. Were the raiders Indians or Mexicans? Ross decided to call a council that would bring together as many tribes as possible in an effort to secure peace.

The 1843 Peace Council actually happened and Ross deterred a probable war among neighboring tribes. Sutton hopes readers understand “his role in saving the Republic of Texas from a full scale invasion by Mexico. He did it using statesmanship.”

I hope that Ms Sutton continues to teach us history through Sasa’s adventures. Her respect for the Cherokees and their role in society is obvious in her writing. Her characters portray both the kindness and evil that can be found throughout history in people of all races.

Third Review of a Very Enjoyable Series
By Amazon Customer
This is the third book of this series I have read now. Each book is familiar yet different. the characters continue to grow and mature and the historical references keep pace. These little known facts of history are things I personally enjoy in a book. They share these things with a wider audience and thus become a part of the social conscience. I have not attended First Nation Pow wows in two states and one in Canada while working with a tribe in Northern New Brunswick. The gathering is realistic and to the point. It depicts the efforts made by the tribes to live in peace. It is a shame that it could not be accomplished as there were so many things to be shared and learned from this lifestyle and culture. All three of the books touch on this element and the transformation of Sasa and Wheezer keeps my interest and kept me pulling for them throughout the story. Keep up the good work!

Review
"This book was an eye opener since it made me see simple aspects of everyday life under different perspectives, more optimistic and just better. Which is just what I needed. More than once I felt like the author was talking to me and knew my experience, even though - like he says - we all have different definitions of happiness. But he managed to find the root of it all starting from his experience, and for me his method worked" - Gio

From the Author
I wrote this book to share with you the habits, beliefs and life changes that helped me become a more positive person. I once was a pessimist to the core. I found joy in complaining, things that went wrong and failure. Oh, don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about. Negative emotions can be rewarding, albeit in a twisted way.

Fortunately, watching The Secret (I know, it's cheesy, but hey, it worked for me) made me realize there's incredible power in myself if I only let go of negative emotions.

In this book, I will share with you how I learned to instill positive habits in myself, and what other changes I did to become a happier person.

Even if not all of the ideas will work for you (we're all different, and I don't claim that I came up with a perfect method to become a happier person), I bet that even one or two ideas from this book can change your life for better (but I know you will find more than just one or two ideas useful!)

About the Author
Nate Nicholson is interested in the practical aspect of the self-help literature. He writes books for people who want to make the most out of their lives by always striving to become a better person.

Nate enjoys writing about introversion and self-confidence, two things close to his heart. The journey he undertook to overcome shyness and become a self-confident person has helped him discover entrepreneurship, fitness, and personal growth, all of which are his main personal interests.

Helpful, but not organized well
By Deshanya
To sum up the book, focus on what you already have and be grateful for it, meditate, stop thinking about other people and do what you can to get to where you really want to be.

The book, however, is written in a less organized way, with a succession of individual tips to happiness, some of which are repeated as, according to the author, they're that important. I think I would have preferred the organization to separate the sections into What, Why and How, rather than habits, beliefs and changes. Particularly if the How section had more concrete things that could be done. I can easily believe that not having depressive thoughts would make me happier. And the example that was given on how not to have angry thoughts worked for anger. But the technique described didn't help for depression.

I agree with the author's whats and whys, but found his hows to be separated rather than together and more theoretical than I would like. My particular problem with advice, whether it be from a book or a psychologist, is that, if specific exercises are not outlined, I have no idea how to put their suggestions into practice. This book has a few (namely, each day thinking of 5 things you're grateful for, meditating, drawing up a plan of what a happy future would look like and going 30 days without complaining) which I admire, but putting them together and including more would have been more helpful to me personally.

I received an electronic copy of this book in exchange for a review.

A book to read over and over.
By Gio
This book was an eye opener since it made me see simple aspects of everyday life under different perspectives, more optimistic and just better. Which is just what I needed. More than once I felt like the author was talking to me and knew my experience, even though – like he says – we all have different definitions of happiness. But he managed to find the root of it all starting from his experience, and for me his method worked. I recognized myself in what he was saying and the listed steps to become happier, which wasn’t something totally revolutionary, just changing little but meaningful things, but as I was saying, it worked. There were also some beliefs and changes that weren’t completely new to me as my psychologist talked about them too, and it was refreshing to see that another person had felt the same way and was able to change their lives for the better. I also liked the quotes which opened some of the chapters, and also the references (I think I might read some of the books mentioned by the author). It’s a great read if you’re feeling down or depressed or just not at your best. This book will inspire you to do more and better (without requiring a revolutionary effort or anything like that), or, since it’s a quick read, it will make you feel less alone in the sense that you’re not the only one that feels that way or has problems, and if that’s something that may seem obvious - at least for me - it felt good to have a little reminder.

The world of Tannrias is soon about to face dark forces of destruction that have yet to be discovered by most of these diverse groups of races who consider Tannrias their home. During these dire times of the darkness that has yet to consume the realm of Tannrias, full of life, some groups since the beginning of their establishment have revealed to the world themselves as holy, righteous folk based on their appearances and actions, but looks and actions can always be deceiving. Sidgbrienn Trosgrid, the son of Chief Rogradin Trosgrid of the island Throzgar, suffered an ill-fated omen according to Throzgarian culture. However, fate may not yet have fully abandoned the young Throzgarian. It may indeed show him another path which will use him as one of the prime pieces Tannrias may depend on for delaying the darkness that is growing there. In addition, fate may have Sidgbrienn cross paths with folk who are willing to help him against the forces of wickedness and corruption for the same reason Sidgbrienn defies the two conflicts while others may simply join him for their own agenda. Can these different agendas affect the future of Tannrias and others in the long run, and can some factions established in Tannrias be involved with the mysterious darkness that has yet to reveal itself?

Neat story and was glad several of my friends suggested this book to me when I was looking hard for a fantasy fiction book. It is a bit different with plots and characters compared to many other fantasy books i read that are too aligned with characters and plots from one another. Eager for the second book to come out because the story still goes on and ends with some cliffhangers.

How do you know whether you are gay or not? In fact, how can anyone know whether they are homosexual or heterosexual or bisexual? If this is the question that’s bothering you, the first thing that you need to do is let go off the stereotypes. Just because you are not as macho as your college football captain does not mean that you are gay. In fact, you could actually be the captain of your football team and be a homosexual rather than a heterosexual. This basically means that gay men do not look different from your “normal” heterosexual male. They are not necessarily more feminine than straight men and they may be as interested in dressing up like a regular male. So, maybe someone just mentioned it to you that you may be gay. Or maybe someone just suggested that you have “too feminine” tastes, implying that you may be gay. This probably confused you and you wanted to just check out whether you are indeed gay. Don’t you worry; this quiz will surely help you. But before we do begin with the quiz, here is one thing that you should keep in mind. The stereotypes that you or your friends have about gays are probably all incorrect. You are not gay because you are good at keeping your house clean, or you are good at picking up the right clothes, or because you dress up neatly. You are gay because you are physically and sexually attracted to men and not women. You are gay because you form strong lasting emotional sexual bonds with men and not women. You are gay because you have a strong inclination towards getting intimate with men than women. You fantasize more about getting sexually involved with men rather than women. In short, do not use the common stereotypes that society has taught you about gays to determine your sexual orientation. Instead, this should depend on the physical and sexual attraction you feel for same sex individuals. So, are you more sexually attracted to men than women? This is the question that you should ask yourself. Still confused? Take The Gay Test and find out the truth.
