This dazzling and deftly written romance...will have readers torn and teary before the artful conclusion.” (Library Journal (starred review))
“With her trademark sense of humor, lively pace and smart, sassy characters, Guhrke pens a sparkling battle of wills between a thoroughly modern miss and cantankerous writer with a dark past.” (Romantic Times)

Almost quit at 40% (but I guess I'm glad I kept on?)
By OLT
(2.5 stars for the disappointment of it all.) If I hadn't read Danker's and others' reviews I would have given up on this at 40% and got on with the rest of my life. But my interest was piqued: It was going to improve. Oh, good. My pre-order $3.79 was not going to waste.
This starts out dismally. Like one of the worst of the HRs of the 1990s. Heroine, for irrational reasons, exposes herself to possible ruin at a ball. Hero saves her from ruin at the hands of one man, only to compromise her stupidly himself. He "nobly" does the right thing and offers for her. She of course refuses.
But, yes, this does improve at about 65%. I like the fact that these two, who have many strikes against their success as a couple, manage to talk reasonably and rationally and come to an understanding of what to expect of each other and their relationship. I also like that, although there is an apparent irrational lust/love at first sight/kiss, especially on the part of the hero, he manages to control his libido well, and the one and only sexual relations scene in the book is at the behest of the heroine.
In other words, at 65%, the H and h start to become rational, intelligent, thoughtful people who manage to work out their problems and trust issues with realistic conversations. Some reviewers have described this book as having "sparkling" dialogue. It didn't sparkle to me as much as it entertained and reassured and let us know that they realize there's more to a relationship than sex.
Oh, one interesting thing I noted in this. Guhrke takes the opportunity here to work in a paragraph or two that try to justify one action of hero Stuart of the previous book, How to Lose a Duke in Ten Days: An American Heiress in London. Those who read that one may remember some readers' complaint about Stuart's treks to Paris whenever he felt the need for sex during his long stay in Africa. The implication here in this new book is that the jaunt to Paris was more for a get-together with all his buddies. (Jack, the hero of this book, having a flat in Paris that they all gathered at once a year.) A sort-of exculpatory for the off-hand comments in TEN DAYS about sex and syphilis?
And then there are the muffins. All right, it was thoughtful of Jack to think of them for a picnic, but so much talk about British vs American muffins makes me think that Guhrke perhaps once upon a time messed up about muffins in one of her other books and is now wanting us to know that she knows the difference between the Old World variety and the New World variety.
But that's neither here nor there. The book's OK in places but not really very interesting. Guhrke can write, especially dialogue. She usually does romantic feelings well (although here not so much). But this is not her best work. I don't see myself ever rereading it. Just thinking about having to read that first two thirds again fills me with dread.

A dull beginning morphs into some interesting dialogue
By Danker
SPOILERS
I found the writing in the opening chapters of Guhrke's Catch a Falling Heiress awkward, flat and dull - in no way reflective of the talent demonstrated in her much earlier works.
The h and H also failed to engage me - they are both impulsive, impatient with rules and, to a degree, used to getting their own way. It is hard to warm to them and that is a problem, because, for a romance to be successful, from the beginning I need to feel connected to at least one of the protagonists.
Added to this weakness in the opening chapters, the responses to their first kiss are so implausible that I almost stopped reading - he feels the touch of her velvet lips and is lost to her forever, deeply ensnared and in love; she soon admits that this touch of the H's lips is electrifying, despite having watched him knock unconscious her childhood friend (and the man she has just decided to marry), being pulled into the H's arms by superior/brute force, kissed without any compliance on her part and conscious that her mother and a local gossip (a hackneyed device) are watching them?
OK. I can believe that he is hit by love at first sight of her glorious eyes. But not her. It is not as though Guhrke even has the h look across the crowded ballroom and become entranced by the H's appearance. On the contrary, without even meeting him the h expresses contempt for men of his stamp, finds his demeanour arrogant and his appearance saturnine. And yet, minutes later, after this stranger demonstrates frightening violence to her friend and forces her to submit to his embrace, this naive virgin, who has only been kissed once before in her life, is somehow electrified by the kiss forced on her?
Despite my incredulity, I persisted, kept reading and so encountered the inevitable next reaction by the h as she became angry and refuses to be bullied into marriage. Much more interesting.
The rest of the story is a ping-pong between the h and H as she rejects his proposals, insists she would rather marry a toad, escapes to England, engages in some rather boring scenes with alternative suitors and so on. Dull.
This isn't, however, a total disaster of a book. I enjoyed, for example, that the H is the one consumed by jealousy, unsure and worried about whether she will marry him. In the latter sections, there is also some interesting dialogue between the h and H as, amongst other things, they argue about trust, discuss parenting and what their other roles will be in any potential marriage. During those discussions she shows her mettle and her intelligence (as she shreds his romantic gestures, revealing them to be manipulative and self serving) and he demonstrates his similar understanding of her self delusions. And he also reveals a somewhat attractive mix - his incapacity to back down when under pressure, as well as his ability to acknowledge and feel remorse for his faults. In my view, that is the strongest component of the book.
Unlike my early Guhrke favourites, this will not, however, go on my re-read pile. It doesn't have the requisite throat gripping angst or even the intense passion of the early works.

A Great Installment to the Series!
By BlithelyBookishReviews
Catch a Falling Heiress is the 3rd book in Laura Lee Guhrke’s An American Heiress in London series. Historical Romance is probably my favorite genre, and it’s because of stories like this.
My thoughts…
I’ll say this right up front, Catch a Falling Heiress is my favorite book in this series, so far. It overlaps slightly with book 2, How to Lose a Duke in Ten Days, so it’s important to read these in order because we get the details on what actually happens to Van Hausen - the vile man with no conscience, no care for anyone but himself. Details… that’s what I wanted and that’s what I got in this book!
I fell madly in love with our hero, Jack, the second son of the Earl of Featherstone. He was not loved by his father and older brother - that I can tell, anyway - and he learned early on that he’d have to make his own way in life. His early years were rough, but with determination and great friends he became an amazing man whose story needed to be told.
Linnet … such a stubborn woman, but it seems to me that’s the way the “American Heiresses” are. They’re so very different from the usual London princesses, and that’s what makes these stories shine – well, that and the amazing heroes!
It’s so much fun watching these men of the ton try to understand (and woo) these women who are nothing like the simpering little chits they’ve been exposed to, and that - along with a great storyline - is what makes Catch a Falling Heiress so entertaining.
The bottom line…
Laura Lee Guhrke’s historical romances are magic, and if you haven’t yet given her stories a read, you’re missing out! The An American Heiress in London series sits proudly on my “must read” shelf, and I can’t wait for the next installment!
