These six women prove to be tremendously courageous as they fight off Indians, find and kill fresh food, and keep their wagons upright crossing flooded rivers. At last, love finds these women and six of the most incredible love stories unfold. Even after Martha’s mother tells her she is too ugly and too tall to attract a man, she comes up with the ultimate catch!

About the Author
Wanda Reed was borne in Yuma AZ. and grew up in California. In her early years, she was a tomboy and had a great fondness for books. When she was in the third grade, she read over 100 books. The first novel that she read was “Black Stallion”. She has had a love of horses, dogs, and western movies throughout her life. These interests show up early in “Six Women West”. She was still in diapers when she brought her first dog home. The dog was an Irish Wolf Hound and was taller than her. Riding her first mule and owning her first horse fueled her interest in the West. The roots of “Six Women West” can also be found in the author’s strong interest in Western movies. She and her husband spent 4 years walking across the US 1985. Along the way they also walked the Oregon Trail and the knowledge from this journey is central to “Six Women West”. They also visited historical sites including plantation houses and slave quarters. With encouragement from fellow writers, she began writing the novel that kept running through her mind. "Six Women West" will be the first in a series of books that follows the unfolding of the lives of 6 fascinating, engaging and courageous women. Today, Wanda and her husband periodically travel to the Oregon coast.

I hated to see the story coming to an end

Six Women West was a thoroughly enjoyable book. I became involved in the characters lives. I hated to see the story coming to an end. Highly recommend for history content.
Each of the characters has a story about how they came to go west. The book showed us how impossible a woman alone during the Civil Wars survival was. But six women together could survive.

This was a great story, and I hated for it to end

This was a great story, and I hated for it to end. The characters were very well developed, and I love historical fiction, and cannot imagine crossing the country in a covered wagon, with all the trials and tribulations they faced on a daily basis. Also, the part of the story that had women going hunting on horseback was great. I guess I would starve if I had to hunt in order to eat. All the women were brave, and strong, but with a wonderful vulnerability and resourcefulness as well. If you love this genre, I highly recommend!

Old West anyone?

This book was awesome! Where is book two? I miss the characters already!!! Haven't come across a book this good in a long time!
I've often read reviews that stated that they felt they were "there" in the book...now I know what they meant! I loved this book! Love the competent women and their love of animals!
Dang what am I gonna read now? Durn. Please write more. I''ll be waitin'.

Sexy, Whimsical & Tender Scottish Romance

I'm frequently intrigued by secondary characters in the books I read and often left wondering what happens to them after the final page. Such was the case with Penelope "Pen" Tolbertson, sister of the heroine of Summer Is For Lovers and William McKenzie, brother of the hero of What Happens In Scotland. You can imagine my delight when I discovered Jennifer McQuiston's plans to write a story for the two in the novella, Her Highland Fling. I'm happy to say it more than met my expectations!

Readers - and characters - are taken on a fun, fast-paced, heartwarming journey in Her Highland Fling. With witty banter, quirky secondary characters and intelligent writing, McQuiston brings us an entertaining tale with plenty of humor and heart. I've been rooting for Pen since meeting her in Summer is for Lovers. She deserves a man who will show her there's more to life than her pencils and notebooks and who will love her for who she is but first, she must learn to accept that love. I was intrigued by William in What Happens in Scotland but fell head over heels for him in Her Highland Fling. When he finally declares himself, I decided if Pen didn't want him I was ready to travel back in time and claim him for myself.

The village of Moraig is brought to life through McQuiston's words. Characters from previous books are an integral part of the story, adding richness without detracting focus from the hero and heroine. Touches of whimsy add charm while quiet moments between William and Penelope fan the flames of desire in addition to gradually deepening the emotion and feelings between them.

As I mentioned earlier, Pen and William were secondary characters in McQuiston's first two books. Do you need to have read those books in order to enjoy Her Highland Fling? No. McQuiston has crafted a humorous, sexy, whimsical, tender story that stands well on its own. Having said that, however, there are occasional references that you won't "get" without knowing the previous stories and while William and Pen are fully formed characters, knowing their back stories will only add a greater depth of richness to the people you meet in Her Highland Fling.

Her Highland Fling

A truly sweet and delightful read, Her Highland Fling was simply wonderful. It was a charming, enjoyable read and I thought it was fantastic.

I really liked both of the main characters in this novella. Penelope was smart and determined to make her way in the world without having to rely on someone else. But, she also realized that she could do the same with someone there to encourage her along the way. William was just adorable. He was very smart, very devoted to the people of his village, and determined to take care of them in any way he could. And, he also had moments where he was struck into a bumbling fool because he was nervous around Penelope, which I thought was adorable. I thought both characters were wonderful.

The romance was lovely. Penelope and William were great together. They had a thing for each other from the moment they met and it quickly turned into something more. They definitely had chemistry as well and both of them were totally unapologetic about how much they lusted after each other. Both sweet and steamy, their romance was great.

The plot moved quickly and had me hooked from page 1. This book was genuinely fun to read, a sweet, entertaining novella if I ever read one. I really liked the story and I thought the ending was just perfect.

Her Highland Fling was a truly excellent historical romance novella that I absolutely loved. With its sweet romance, engaging characters, and delightful romance, this book was a winner. Romance lovers, you won't want to miss this one.

I couldn't wait to pick up this novella!

I couldn't wait to pick up this novella by Jennifer McQuiston! Both Penelope and William are characters from series of full length novels and I was delighted to see them again. Pen is a fascinating character, a female journalist in the Victorian age isn't an easy job and she's determined to prove herself. William isn't who she thinks at first, and as the story unfolds they embark on a lovely journey of discovery. But in the end, Pen needs to return to London and William has to stay. I loved how the author resolved this conflict so William and Pen could have their happy ending!

Life Is a Non-Stop Party When We Remove Our Suits of Armour!

I loved Joe Blow's book and plan to keep it nearby as a reference. This is my favorite line.

"Life is a non-stop party when we remove our suits of armor."

The author paints a vivid picture by asking us to imagine Mediaeval Knights in full body armor trying to play football. Imagine, he says, how it keeps the body stiff and unresponsive, and how it keeps the free flow of ideas and emotion from a mind that is likewise armored.

His analogy became even more clear, when he asks us to consider being at a party where we have a few drinks and begin removing our clothes--our suits of armor--our inhibitions. Most of us can relate to how relaxed and free we'd feel, regardless of whatever was going on.
The idea here is not to take up drinking or drugs, but to learn how to achieve this feeling naturally so we can at last be free.

Joe Blow says, "When we are armored, our ability to work together on problem-solving is limited. In our insecure state we are prone to find ourselves in conflict with others and the process can be frustrating. But in the non-armoured state, not only are we able to co-operate in problem-solving, it becomes the most enjoyable activity imaginable. What we really want is to be in a state of loving communion with others."

The book does a good job of explaining how we can keep off the merry-go-round that cuts us off from our capacity for unconditional love--how our inner child is as capable of loving ourselves as much as anyone. I took this to mean that when we accept others and ourselves without demands, it makes us all equal and truly free to live a fulfilling and happy life.

Very interesting book. His writing is different. His thoughts are very interesting. He doesn't have a degree in psychology but you would never be able to tell that.

More purple than sage, but worth reading

If you are not an aficionado of the Western novel but would like to sample the genre, then you should try one or more of the three great classics; Jack Schaefer's "Shane", Owen Wister's "The Virginian" , and this novel by Zane Grey. Of the three, "Shane" has the most literary merit and is the only one with claims to being great literature. "The Virginian" is often regarded as the first true representative of the genre, establishing as it does many of the great archetypal characters and incidents of Western myth, and "Riders of the Purple Sage" remains the best-selling Western.
"Riders" has two very remarkable features. The first is the surprising complexity and mythic depth of the story. There is for example, a Garden of Eden theme, with two of the characters isolated for an extended time in a lush wilderness. This is so strikingly like the Emil Zola novel "La Faute de l'Abbe Mouret" (The Abbe Mouret's Sin) that one wonders if Grey had read and been inspired by that work. Interwoven with this is an Oedipal theme. If all of this sounds a bit much for a cowboy yarn, I can only say that it really is all there.
The other remarkable thing about the book is its attitude toward the Mormon religion. The hero is an avowed "killer of Mormons". The LDS church is depicted as essentially brutal and tyrannical. This, I suppose, reflects a prejudice of the time, but I wonder how present-day members of that church regard this novel.
It has to be said that Grey is not a great writer and in particular, he cannot do dialogue. In fact, the dialogue in the first few pages is so appalling that I nearly gave up on the book there and then. However, I'm glad I stuck with it. It is such a fine and strange story and has such a wonderful sense of place.

Her father's death has left Jane Withersteen in possession of the richest land holding in the Cottonwoods, a Mormon village on the 1871 Utah frontier. Most importantly, Amber Spring runs through her property and so she controls the water supply that makes possible the rolling fields of purple sage. But now the Mormon church wants to gain contol of the spring by forcing an unwilling Jane to marry Elder Tull. They've been steadily increasing the pressure on her and as the novel opens, Tull and his henchmen have come to arrest Venters, the Gentile foreman on her ranch. Outnumbered and outgunned, Jane prays for deliverance. Just as Tull is about to whip Venters, a rider in black appears--Lassiter, the scourge of the Mormons.
Lassiter is an archetype of the mythic Western hero. In him we see the origins of both Shane and Ethan Edwards (from The Searchers, Amos in the novel)--a lone gunmen fighting for Justice, he has descended upon Mormon Utah with a vengeance, obsessively searching for the sister who was kidnapped by a Mormon proselytizer.
Jane takes him on as a ranch hand, but makes him swear to forsake violence. Inevitably (as in High Noon), events force her to release him from his oath.
Despite an extremely harsh view of Mormons, this is one of the truly great Westerns; a must read.

Classic western story

This is the only western I've ever read; I'm mostly into classical literature, science writing, and non-fiction, but I asked friends for a book rec in the field, and they said read this one and the two Thomas Berger novels about Little Big Man.

The novel is interesting in that it's not a stereotypical western story. The main character is a woman who owns a large cattle ranch and is basically the mainstay of the little town of Cottonwoods, a Mormon town on the Utah border, sort of like the Cartwright family was in the popular TV western series, only in this case, Lorne Green is replaced by a female lead. The novel also is unusual in that it shows her struggling against the tyranny and even criminality of her fellow Mormon ranchers, who don't like the fact of a beautiful, wealthy, but unattached woman, who wields considerable influence in the local town despite their best attempts to undermine her.

One the things that sparked my interest in the novel was hearing an English prof in a radio interview on National Public Radio talk about some of the scholarship that is being devoted to genres like the western novel. She was working herself on the books of Karl May (The Legend of the Llano Estacado), Owen Wister (The Virgianian), and Zane Grey.

One of the interesting things she had to say had to do with Grey's vivid prose descriptions of the western landscape. She said Grey's prose sensualized the landscape, giving it an almost masculine sensuality and almost sexuality. I'm about halfway into the book, and I can say that the rugged countryside of sheer, rock-walled canyons, arid plateaus and valleys, and wide-open spaces of this part of Utah are vividly described by Grey and serve, not just as a dramatic backdrop against which the novel's events take place, but as a palpable force for good or evil by itself.

Contrary to some other reviews I've read that said the plot wandered a bit, I'm not really noticing that. I think the book has a strong plot with a lot of powerful elements going for it: interesting characters (including a dangerous and mysterious but chivalrous gunslinger), a sympathetic main character who struggles and triumphs against society's evils (not just a few western-style bad guys), beautiful and evocative descriptions of the landscape, and, as the backcover says it, "hairsbreadth escapes."

One last interesting thing is that, if I remember correctly, Zane Grey was actually a Pennsylvania dentist who failed in his attempt to set up a profitable dental practice in New York. He wanted to get into writing westerns, and when his first novel was a big success, his writing career was launched and he never looked back. Riders of the Purple Sage is probably his most famous book, and despite it's not being a typical western novel, it has become a classic in its field.

Truly Inspiring!

This book is very inspirational. I read it in one evening. Quite the page turner! I love how the author drew from her faith in God to help her prevail through the many storms she encountered. The reader will walk away with a different outlook on life after reading this. Very motivational!

Awesome Book

This book was very attention-grabbing as soon as I began reading. So much so that I had to read the entire book in one sitting. I didn't want to put it down. I had to use my nightlight because my husband had to get to sleep so he could get up early for work. I loved the story and can't wait until the next book comes out. This book is filled with hope, promise, and love. It gives me chills in some parts and then I'm crying in other parts. This is a must read for anyone that is lost, anyone that is in love, anyone who wants to learn about faith, practically for everyone.

About the Author
After nearly twenty-six years of writing different kinds of reports, mostly police reports, I decided to try writing some fiction. It took me a little over a year to come up with a story. It started out as a short story I wrote for my ten-year-old son and then snowballed. It was as if the story was stuck inside me, fighting to get out. Time Traveler's Rock: Flaming Eagle is a unique title of it's kind. As an outdoor enthusiast myself, I really enjoyed jumping into a story where I was transported into wilderness living. The protagonist, James, is a retired computer programmer who sets off on a hike one day. While stopping to rest, James falls asleep and wakes up to different scenery than what he recalls dozing off to. He comes into confrontation with a young boy speaking a different language, and is then shoved with such force, he falls and strikes his head on a rock. James blacks out.

Suddenly, we are seeing the story through the eyes of a young American-Indian boy named Baby Bird...and we are transported back 500 years. He is taken from his family and forced to live with a Canoe Man. Baby Bird is exposed to many facets of growing up, such as hard work, bullying, sportsmanship, and responsibility. The reader grows right along side him.

There is a strong theme of growth in this book. It has a very interesting premise and I thought it had a well developed plot that moved at a satisfactory pace. There are just enough plot points and surprise turns to keep your interest from dwindling. The book itself is a time machine, and I found it intriguing that we traveled from the future to the past in one sitting!

Cons are: I wish there was a little more development around how the time traveling happened and why; that seemed a little unclear to me. I also think there needs to be a little more grammatical cleanup in terms of punctuation and sentence structure.

Overall, this was an enjoyable book! It has a lot of potential and I think it would do well in the library. Special thanks to Rick for supplying me an ecopy of his book, it was a pleasure meeting him at the Southern Festival of Books in Nashville!

A Story So Much Better Than You'd Ever Expect

This novel is one of those you simply cannot put down, and then as you progress, collecting every last detail right alongside Baby Bird, a ten-year-old American Indian boy, you truly do not want it to end.
As the title indicates, this book involves time travel, however, it is unique in the fashion in which it transitions from the year 2065 to 400 or 500 years earlier, in the mid 1500s or 1600s, an era well before modern or even advanced technology.
The story begins with a man named James, who is 61, retired from a lifetime of designing computer games, and who takes in exercise in the form of hiking. One day while hiking he came upon what appeared to be a soccer or lacrosse field and a stream running next to it. James rests himself for a while and falls asleep. He awakes to the sound of kids playing in the field. He notices, "There's something different about the field…[and] the stream was wider than I remembered before I had fallen asleep. It was flowing a little faster but calm enough to swim in it."
The kids were playing with sticks and chasing a small ball. James witnessed one kid catch the ball with his mouth then run toward the goal. This made him chuckle. The kid with the ball heard him laugh and went toward him. This boy was about 12. He began yelling at James in a language he did not quite understand, and then pushed him hard enough to knock him to the ground. James struck his head on a rock and lay dazed until he blacked out.
The story is fast-paced, packed with action, triumph, and achievement. It takes you through the life of a young boy, battling bullies no matter where life takes him from one tribe to another, all the way through his rite of passage. The information that comes forth shows the reader how Baby Bird deals with bullies as early in life as his own two brothers and then the making of enemies from competing in the canoe races, a tribal ritual, also from his uncle, and others in the village.
Each chapter takes the reader through a better understanding of a cultural life, allowing them to experience the importance of honor, working hard without complaint as it builds strength and character, earning and showing respect for others, following rules, the meaning of participating in traditional tribal games, perceiving the rituals of romance, the rite of passage, and understanding the belief in the Great Spirit, a great ruler of the universe.
Surprisingly, Baby Bird is taken from his family without explanation, but as it is a custom to follow the decisions of the father, Baby Bird, fights his every urge to escape and return home; rather, he comes to accept his father's decision to live with Canoe Man. This book certainly presents twists and turns very well, all with the exceptional ability to cause curiosity and excitement for the reader. So much more happens in this story, though reflecting it here would only take away the exhilarating element of discovery.
Reading this entire book is time well spent. It is creatively constructed, transitions perfectly, is a wealth of information, allows the reader to experience another place and time, and appeals to both young boys and girls. The only drawback this book possesses is the ending--the reader is left wanting for more. If ever a book were encouraged as a must read, this book is definitely one of them. Get this book and you'll enjoy an extremely good read.

Time Traveler’s Rock ‘Flaming Eagle” is a fantastic story that will transport the reader back in time by 500 years. The story is captivating and the imagery in the writing will take the reader on a trip that includes vivid descriptions of the sights, sounds and aroma of the great outdoors. This historical fiction is designed to describe for the reader the daily activities and rituals of the Indian population around the Mississippi River valley and the Cahokia Mounds area during the 1500s.
Young readers will be able to relate with the daily struggles of a young Indian boy who is learning to make his way in a new tribe after his time traveling deposits him in a totally new environment. Flaming Eagle has to deal with bullies and learn how to win at yearly games that are of great importance to his new tribe. He has to master the art of canoe building without any tools and modern conveniences. The reader can feel his pain as he develops his muscles and strengthens his hands for the endurance of daily manual labor. The smell of hickory smoke will linger as the author describes the process used to build the best canoes in the area.
Universal themes of love of family, good vs evil and perseverance pays off are all evident in the story line. Young readers will be able to have empathy for the young boy and parents will be able to discuss the themes as they relate to young boys and girls today and the challenges they face in everyday modern life. The author does a great job of weaving the story tapestry with strong character development that will have the reader rooting for the young brave and wanting to read more of Flaming Eagle’s adventures.

About the Author
Sheila Hancock is one of Britain's most highly regarded and popular actors, and received an OBE for services to drama in 1974 and a CBE in 2011. Since the 1950s she has enjoyed a career across film, television, theatre and radio. Her first big television role was in the BBC sitcom The Rag Trade in the early 1960s. She has directed and acted for the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre. Her first book, Ramblings of an Actress, was published in 1987. Following the death of her husband, John Thaw, Sheila Hancock wrote a memoir of their marriage, The Two of Us, which was a no. 1 bestseller and won the British Book Award for Author of the Year in 2004. Her memoir of her widowhood, Just Me, also a bestseller, was published in 2008. She lives in London and France.

Nope sorry ! ... Historical review of 50 s 60s70s but no depth to any of the characters so really rather dull unfortunately ... At the beginning marguerite is described as an exotic fashion forward French lady with an exciting secretive past in wartime ... But as the story unfolds she develops into a bit of a pathetic frump ... I was disappointed and especially so when she meets up again with marcel at the end who has remained in his hamlet all those intervening 30 + years farming ? ... Please ... No ... I LOVE Sheila Hancock as an actress ... Not so much as a writer unfortunately ,,, I wouldn't recommend this book unless to a very young person who would like an overview of English history after the way to the 80s ?

I managed 3/4 of the book. I just had to give up. I don't think it was particularly well-written. I thought the beginning was quite interesting, as it described quite well post war England but the book was really about the trials and tribulations of education and two quite boring characters. Enough said.....

The book itself is a testament to its premise, you must fight to look past the you that you've grown up becoming acquainted with and embrace the you that has something vital to share with people who have experienced similar issues. I recommend this book to every young minister or ministry leader who bouts everyday with what they are compared to the personification of what they admire on TV. This has just become mandatory reading for my leaders at Connection Church! Love It Extremely

About the Author
Andrew "Drew" Eubanks was raised near the sunny beaches of Brevard county Florida, where he grew to love the surf and sun. At the age of sixteen he became an Eagle Scout, the highest rank that can be achieved in the Boy Scouts of America. The social skills and ethics of hard work and leadership served him well when he joined the United States Marine Corps after graduating from Titusville High School in 2002. During his time in the Marine Corps, Drew was in charge of over 50 other Marines and millions of dollars of heavy equipment and hazardous waste disposal. During this time, he gained a love of fitness that still carries on today - through countless hours of exercise and a mostly organic diet. Drew believes that the self-discipline one must have to keep the body sharp carries over to the mind. His commitment to his health is a commitment that carries onto all aspects of his life, including sales. After four years in the Marine Corps, Drew acquired a position as a salesman for a midsized auto dealer in eastern North Carolina. After showing continued success in his ventures, he was eventually given the opportunity to manage a small hyundai dealership in south Georgia. There, he successfully took the dealership from an average of 6 cars per month to selling 47 in his first month. Today, Drew resides in the Raleigh-Durham area of North Carolina with his girlfriend Britni and his six year old daughter Alize. Here he has combined the values of honor, courage and commitment that he learned in the Marine Corps and the salesmanship learned through out his auto sales career into a new passion. Drew's love for business has led him to a new venture that he hopes will provide a great service to the public in their auto buying experience. Though, Drew's work has often involved motor vehicles, his true passion in life is real estate. This started at a young age with a love of skylines and the complexities of architecture. Drew believes that real estate, more than any other business combines his appreciation for skylines with his love of helping people to make their dreams come true. Laying the groundwork for productivity and time management skills.

This book is great for those of us that want to get the most out of every day. People who want to get the most out of work, as well as their personal lives will find this book to be very useful, I like the way the author broke down productivity into eight standard principles (I'm not going to tell you what they are, because otherwise you won't need to read the book), but suffice it to say. They made me think. Some of them seemed like common sense and caused me to have an "why didn't I think of that" moment and others were very interesting concepts such as breaking the day into blocks or chunks so that it is easier to focus on one particular task without feeling overwhelmed or board. I also like how the book described the importance of making a plan of productivity for everyday and explaining why working the plan would eventually lead to being a more productive citizen.

I also like how the book gave examples of how to improve my morning routine so that I will start the day off on the right foot as often as possible, as well as provide me with more energy and a positive outlook that will ultimately lead to a greater level of personal happiness throughout the course of my life. Overall I found this book to be extremely useful, particularly given the price point, and I'm very glad to have come across it in my search for information about time management and productivity skills. It was very straightforward, easy to read which meant that putting all of these steps, and/or principles into practice. In my daily life was relatively simple which has allowed me to start using most of them without much deviation from my normal routine or inconvenience. I am very pleased with my purchase, and I will keep an eye on this author for future reference.

Concise Read... Solid principles.

This book goes straight to the real reasons that successful people are successful. They manage their time better and get more out of a day than most unsuccessful people do. This is a concise read that doesn't pull any punches. By following these principles, you can get better control of your time rather than time having control of you.
