My name is Curtis Price. Until my extraordinary death, I lived an ordinary life in the poor side of town in Osprey Falls, Maine, with my mother and older sister. I am the boy that nobody sees, ignored in the shadows of the hallway. I am the kid that is picked last in gym. I am the student that is never called on in class to answer the question, and, after a while, I stop bothering to raise my hand.
It is not until my stepfather shoots me that I am finally—finally—noticed.
Advanced Praise for Ordinary Boy:
“Ordinary Boy offers an insightful view into the life of a boy growing up under extraordinary circumstances. Its youthful optimism balances the harsh realities of a family’s survival in a tale that is bravely human, heartwarming, and devastating.”
— Ursula Wong author of Purple Trees
“In Ordinary Boy, Stacey Longo creates poignancy and meaning out of all the pangs of youth, the horrors and minor joys. With deft touches, she portrays a struggle that pulls us into the story. An excellent and absorbing tale of growing up without special privileges or abilities, just a daily striving against a lousy hand that fate has dealt.”
~ Dale T. Phillips, author of the Zack Taylor mysteries
“Ordinary Boy sounds the depths of youth, adolescence, and young adulthood in a voice at once deft and ghostly and heartbreaking. Huck Finn, Nick Adams, Holden Caulfield—they all would’ve ‘got’ Curtis Price perfectly.”
~ David Daniel, author of Reunion and White Rabbit

An Extraordinarily Good Read
By Linda J. Orlomoski
In "Ordinary Boy" Stacey Longo brings to life - and death - Curtis Price, a likable young man who has the misfortune of not only growing up poor but also unpopular even in his own hole of a low-income housing neighborhood. For all that's wrong in his life growing up in the 80s at a time when cliques were the norm and being an outsider was torture, Curtis is a good kid with a moral compass that consistently points him in the right direction even when the magnetic pull of puberty causes it to waiver a little bit. You can't help but like this kid whose story is told by Stacey Longo as if she herself grew up as an unpopular, combination nerd/geek (before it was cool) teenage boy. Matter of fact, it's rather scary how Longo - whose usual genre is horror - got into the head of a prepubescent boy with such accuracy but perhaps she's just a good researcher as well as writer!
When you're left thinking about the 'what ifs', 'whys', and "yea buts" of a story long after you've put the book down, you know that it was a good one and that's definitely the case with "Ordinary Boy" which in the long run proves the point that no matter how ordinary we may think we are, no matter how many lives we don't think we've touched as we make our way through this sometimes cruel world of ours that no man (or boy) is an island and that we've left more of a wake passing through than we ever thought. It's a lesson that Curtis learns and shares with us - it's just too bad he didn't know it before he was dead.

Anything but Ordinary
By Reader Prime
ORDINARY BOY is anything but ordinary. The down-to-earth, emotionally honest and ambitious sweep of this novel place it among such works as THE OUTSIDERS for its portrayal of a boy determined to overcome life’s burgeoning realities as he navigates his overwhelmingly awkward and yet unnervingly beautiful teenage years.
Longo threads her own style of blunt, honest humor throughout this dark, dramatic work, showing that life can be funny and tragic at the same time, and adding colorful nuances that punctuate the realities in the poor side of town. The roller coaster of first love, the uncertainty of defining oneself, and the struggles against small-minded bullies unaware of their own shortcomings skillfully accentuate this engaging family drama.
Like so many of us, Curtis Price seeks to escape the confines of his financially strapped situation and the personal anchors that weigh him down, desperately trying to make sense of the world he’s growing into. He is resilient and he is determined, but the unexpected could upend everything he's worked so hard to achieve. Will his dreams fade into the drab alleys and smoky bars of Osprey Falls, or will he prevail and attain escape velocity?

Curtis will win you over and you’ll fall in love with this ordinary boy who we all took for ...
By Dan Foley, Author of Inruder
Ordinary Boy is a coming of age story of a shy, withdrawn boy who, we find out in the Prologue, just happens to be dead. We all knew, or at one point or another, were, Curtis Price. He’s the boy that blends into the background, the boy who strives to fit in but doesn't. Longo takes you along on Curtis’ journey through adolescence and into his teenage years as he learns to accept who he is and deal with bullies, girls, and life in general. And then, as we learned in the Prologue, he is shot by his stepfather. Curtis will win you over and you’ll fall in love with this ordinary boy who we all took for granted at one time or another.
