A good book with a surprise ending

I had the privilege of being one of the first people to read this. It is one of those books that makes you want to peek around the corner to know what is going to happen next. You feel like you are right there beside the main character in the story. It was well worth the read and I loved the twists and turns that happened along the way.

New author, difficult subject

This new author is to be commended for tackling such a painful and difficult subject. She writes believable dialog and description. I applaud her efforts and hope she continues to find her voice, via the written word. I do feel the characters had too little depth, impeding my ability to sympathize with them. I wanted to cheer for Donna and despise Hawk -- which I did, but not as deeply as I could have if I had known more about them. All in all, though, anyone who has the gumption to write a story on this topic gains my respect.

I thought you were up stairs and wouldn’t be able to hear the door.” Rico laughed. “Nope, I was in the living room,” said Jordyn “So anyway, what did you wanted to talk to me about?” asked Rico. “I wanted to talk to you about our relationship. I feel like we should break up. I mean come on Rico, you can’t even stay faithful to me. And to make things worse, you have a baby. Then you supposed to have a side chick that came up in my shop trying to put me in my place.” “What!” Rico said with surprise. Jordyn paused as if she was thinking. Then she blurted out, “And anyways I found someone else that will treat me the way that I need to be treated.” Rico wasn’t expecting that news. Normally I wouldn't write a review but for this book I had no choice. The book was rushed and lacked detail. Some of the stuff just seemed unreal. The incident in here where the friend came and spoke about her abuse, what friend tells someone in that situation that they are dumb and I'm going to tell you I told you so if she stays. The book was all over the place and the introduction of characters that really didn't have a purpose. On top of that errors throughout the book. The storyline was okay but I couldn't get into because after while you start looking for the next mistake. I would have thought a tenth grader wrote this. I wont be reading part 2.

Enjoyable Stories and Life Lessons

In Bloom, Dr. Tavee manages to convey her positive spirit while always sounding genuine. As a Neurologist, she has seen the worst that life has to offer, but she manages to maintain an upbeat outlook and down to earth attitude. Her stories are short, enjoyable and to-the-point. In one chapter, she explains how difficult it is to break bad news (the worst news) to patients, her approach is thoughtful and compassionate. It's an interesting glimpse into the thought process of how a physician has learned to handle such delicate and painful communication. After reading "Bloom" it's obvious that she has a deep and genuine affection for her patients. Only some of the stories center around medicine, she also talks a lot about mental attitude and spiritual health. I especially appreciated one chapter, where she explains how destructive it is to live a completely self-centered life, her explanation is short, elegant and sensible. And makes me want to try just a little bit harder to be a decent person.

I'm not sure if this is considered a "self-help" book, but anyone who reads it will be helped, and not only that, inspired to help others! She is both an intellectual and spiritual person. But her writing is easy to understand and she never preaches. My only complaint is that Dr. Tavee reveals very little about her personal life and the passions that drive her. But overall the book is a great pleasure. My copy is already dogeared and highlighted and will be referred to in the future.

Wow! Normally I don't check these types of books out but I'm glad I took a chance on the new author.
Volition kept me thoroughly interested all the way to the thrilling end. In fact, I get angry at books like this because I end up losing a ton of sleep... but very worth it!
I would recommend this novel and can't wait for the 2nd one to be released so I can continue reading his literary adventure!

The Osage try to protect themselves and their way of life, but the situation becomes hopeless, especially when the sheriff and government investigators are suspected of participating in the murders. YAs will enjoy the suspense and unexpected twists of the story line, but they will also find it thought-provoking and unsettling. Through this tribe, readers experience the injustice inherent in cultural prejudice as they did in Griffin's Black Like Me (NAL, 1961), and they confront government corruption firsthand. The moving descriptions of Indian values highlight current environmental concerns. A valuable supplement to social-studies classes.

In her debut as a novelist, poet and essayist Hogan chronicles the effects of the 1920s Oklahoma oil boom on two Native American families, people entirely unprepared for the consequences of a sudden and unprecedented influx of wealth. Herself a member of the Oklahoma Chickasaw tribe, Hogan tells the story of heretofore worthless land allotted to Indians in the early years of the 20th century. Wells originally drilled for water bring forth only "the thick black fluid that had no use at all for growing corn or tomatoes," and "the Barren Land" is transformed virtually overnight into "the Baron Land." Writing in a spare, compact style, Hogan sketches the bewilderment, hope, greed, and ultimate tragedy brought on by sudden (mis)fortune in this fine, sad first novel. Recommended.

Engrossing

"Mean Spirit" is a fictionalized, but very vivid portrayal of the hardships faced by Native Americans in the former "Indian Country" (Oklahoma) during the 1920s. Most of the main characters are members of the Osage people, who were and to some extent still are better off than many other native peoples because the land alloted to them in Oklahoma sits atop a pool of oil and they retained the mineral rights. However, as Hogan points out, this material wealth was a very mixed blessing in many ways. First and foremost, the Osage became the objects of the manipulations and schemes of various oil barons and others (very likely with the tacit support of the local and even federal authorities) often with fatal consequences - and this is the main theme of the book. Although written in the engrossing style of a thriller, "Mean Spirit" is not a whodunnit novel. It is rather an exploration of the consequences of the U.S. government's policies consistently (either directly or indirectly) aimed against the interests of Native Americans, aided and abetted by society in general. It also shows that even after active fighting and expulsion ended, the war against the Native Americans continued by other means. These messages are skillfully incorporated in a very believable and realistic story (indeed, many characters and situations are based on actual people and events), which is frequently interspersed with some refreshing, very dry humor. "Mean Spirit" is a fantastic novel and a great work of contemporary fiction.

Hogan succeeds in showing the plight of the Osage Indians...

This book, about the killing of Osage Indians by whites for the oil on the Indians' land, is almost spiritual in its descriptions of the Indians and their world. This world is one in which the land is alive just as man is, and the closeness that people have with the land makes for a more complete life. Hogan's descriptions make the reader feel for the Indians and even yearn for the simplicity of the old Indian ways that are shown to be being lost throughout the book.

Evocative and Shameful

Linda Hogan's words are powerful, and MEAN SPIRIT demonstrates this most admirably. In this novel we cry out against the outrageous atrocities committed on the Osage during the oil boom in Oklahoma. The fact that many of the incidents are based on true history makes me ashamed to be an American, a white person and an Oklahoman. But that is the power of her writing -- Linda Hogan doesn't preach to the reader, but she allows the reader to draw her own conclusions about the real and supposed crimes, crimes of law and of love and morality. Read this novel and be warned -- you will laugh, but you will also cry, as your sense of outrage and injustice moves you to examine your own life, and your family's history. My family settled on Oklahoma land when it opened up for white settlement -- I'm afraid to find out if they were participants in these crimes. If you, like me, come from a "proud" settler heritage, read this book and see what the original inhabitants think of our coming

Existential Musings

I was first introduced to Ki Etienne last November during the National Novel Writing challenge. Through daily videos, she shared with us the struggles and triumphs of crafting a finished manuscript, start to finish. Her personal journey has been an inspiration to aspiring writers like myself, and it’s great to see that her passion and perseverance has finally paid off. I purchased the Kindle version of Est. 199X yesterday and spent much of the day enjoying this fun, quick read. I found myself pausing often and smiling in self-reflection. More of a character study and social commentary than a traditional novel, Ki chose to write this book in a humorous, narrative style that is both genuine and thought-provoking. Her mysterious main character, the anonymous blogger “X”, narrates each themed segment from a socially-awkward and uniquely-witty perspective. These bite-sized chapters tackle such issues as loneliness in a crowded world, “unwanted advice”, the realization that nobody (including yourself) knows the true you, and the universal questions of " who am I and why am I here." I especially liked the blogger’s take on the highs and lows of relationships, crushes, and other social interactions. Hefty observations from this lost soul. It got me thinking about my own life and the expectations that family and society placed on me, but more importantly, the expectations I had for myself. The realization that I have only one life to live, one chance to reach my full potential, juxtaposed against the paralyzing fear of making the wrong life decision and living a life regretfully unfulfilled. Each open opportunity closes another. How to choose? Life doesn’t come with an instruction manual. It’s encouraging to know that some of the same issues that I struggled with as a young adult (I’m Gen-X) are still relevant today. It’s nice to see a fresh perspective on the timeless struggles of self-discovery and finding one’s place in the world. Blogger “X” would consider this “unwanted advice,” but, in my opinion, Ki Etienne has a knack for writing and a budding career as an author if she chooses that life path. (Ugh, more life decisions!) I believe that an old soul resides within her because she has wisdom beyond her years. Overall, this is a solid debut from a gifted young writer. I eagerly await her next book.

Growing up 90's

This is a great read for all ages, but especially the 90's babies. So much of what the narrator speaks of are things I experienced growing up and things I felt. The brutal honesty and unapologetic writing style makes this book just as hilarious as it is interesting. Take a nostalgic walk down memory lane with Est. 199x, but beware of the not-so-good memories it may just conjourn up.

Loved it!

Seriously, this book is a beast! I really enjoyed it. It's told in a blog style which is pretty unique. The narrator talks about many topics that 90's babies are facing in the world. And although I'm in my mid-thirties, I was totally able to relate to some of the themes. I can't wait for Ms. Eitenne to release more work.

I highly recommend this series!

Another great mystery awaits readers in the latest installment of the Klepto Cat Mystery series by Patricia Fry. The Hammond Cat Alliance wants to do something about the feral cat colonies in the area and decide to set up teams to "adopt' the colonies so that the cats can be fed and vetted. Margaret, Colbi and Savannah decide to volunteer to take care of a feral colony out at the old Fischer building an abandoned warehouse that has been rumored to be haunted. Right off the bat Colbi sees something in one of the windows that she can't explain, but that doesn't stop the gang from trying to take care of the cats by catching neutering and releasing them. Thing is someone is sabotaging their work, by turning the cats loose as soon as they are caught. When they get a call from a woman who offers to help the Cat Alliance with a fundraising idea by having a flea market in the old building it sounds like a good idea, that is until Rags finds something in the building that ties to an old crime. Soon Savannah and the gang find themselves in the middle of a crime investigation, one that just might turn deadly!

Each time I pick up a new book in the Klepto Cat Mystery series I feel like I am catching up with old friends, while meeting a few new ones! I have watched as the characters have grown and changed as each story progressed. The romance that was developing between Colbi and Damon in a previous book continues to grow, and I am anxious to see where the author takes it with the next book in the series. Savannah is just weeks from giving birth and of course Rags the Klepto Cat is the star of the story. A pawsativly page turning mystery that was filled with plenty of twists and turns kept me guessing right up till the end, and I must say the twist at the end was surprising, and very well done! While I enjoyed the mystery Ms. Fry provides with each story I think the characters, family, friendships, and love of animals makes this one of my favorite series to read. Cat lovers are sure to love this entire series, but honestly anyone who enjoys a clean, well written cozy mystery that blends suspense, mystery,romance together with a page turning plot will find The Colony Cat Caper a purfect read. I have read each book in the series and highly recommend each one! My only complaint is that I have to wait for book six!

such a good mystery

I have read all books 4 of the other books and I loved them and yes I did love this one as well. Just all all the others, I just couldn't put this one down. It is very well written and it just sucks you right in.

If you love cats and you are looking for good clean mystery, I highly recommend this and all the other books in this series.

These characters, human and furred, are so endearing.

This is the fifth book in the Catnapped Mysteries so spoilers will be hard to avoid.

This mystery starts out with a bang. Margaret and her friend Colbi are trussed up in an old building with little hope of rescue.

From there, the author takes you back to what leads up to this scene.

Savannah, now happily married with a baby on the way, is one maternity leave. She joins up with her Aunt Maragaret and reporter Colbi Stanton to help a cat colony at an old abandoned building.

There’s a mystery surrounding the building. Some believe it’s haunted by something supernatural.

As with her other books, Patricia Fry gives you several mysteries to solve and Savannah’s klepto cat, Rags, really ups the ante with his exciting discovery.

What did Rags unearth? Who or what lurks in the building? Are the cats safe? This and more will be revealed as you dive in and mingle with a diverse cast of characters, good and bad, human and furred.

I’ve read the first two books in this series, so I felt comfortable in skipping to this fifth book. While I had no trouble following the story and catching up on early events, I’ll be picking up the third and fourth book so I can experience them first hand. This series is that fun!

Interesting story about survival and fulfillment

An interesting story of adversity and survival. It is set in Russia, but you wouldn't know it from the narrative. I assume that the story happened under communism, yet there is not a hint of the awful reality of that political system.

The kidnapping and sexual slavery is well portrayed and so is Vera's struggle to survive as a single mother.

Overall a nice story. I just wish it was more descriptive and authentic in its description of the country and environment at the time.

Very gripping story

Vera is a nineteen year old girl full of dreams of being an actress. She leaves her village to go to Moscow to go to an acting school and even got a role in a movie. She is on her way back to Moscow from a visit to her home when she is drugged and sold as a slave in her country. She is able to escape and get back but her life has completely changed her life.
I found this story really well written and I could feel for the main character.

Interesting Story

Though the story wasn't what I was expecting, The more I read the more interesting the story became. I wasn't sure how the story was going to play out until the end and I appreciate that the author gave Vlada the ending I believe she deserved. Happiness and love.

A moving and deeply affecting work containing a wealth of perceptual observation that exacts a huge emotional toll

Set in the 1990's in the San Francisco Bay area where the author is an improv actor, Charles Souby's second novel A Shot of Malaria chronicles the tragic life of a drug and alcoholic dependent musician, Daniel Martin.

Admittedly, this is a moving and deeply affecting work containing a wealth of perceptual observation that exacts a huge emotional toll as it convincingly portrays an addict who is tragically adrift leaving readers wondering how our protagonist will be able to somehow hang on and survive with all of the bitterness, despair and loss he suffers.

Daniel is a very complicated and messed up character whose days are taken up with drinking in bars with other addicts and visits to a methadone clinic, where methadone is dispensed to those who abuse heroin and other narcotics. The primary goal of these clinics is to try and extinguish or reduce opioid usage by putting the patient on methadone. At times these treatments can prove to be successful, however, the use of these treatments is often viewed as controversial.

In the opening chapters we find Daniel being interviewed by one of the temporary counselors of the methadone clinic, and, as we discover, he has not come to terms with the seriousness of his fifteen years of addiction. He informs the counselor that he only needs a short term treatment to find work and put his life back together. Subsequently, Daniel is assigned to a permanent counselor, Elsie Schwartz, and upon meeting her for the first time, we learn that he makes a little money by playing banjo on the street and that he periodically receives US savings Bonds his grandmother left him that are administered by his aunt.

During the course of further counseling sessions Daniel recounts that all his friends are addicts whom he meets for social entertainment in neighborhood bars. We are also told that one of his closest friends, Cody is dying of cancer. Daniel becomes very much attracted to Elsie, whom he falls in love with knowing full well, however, that nothing will develop other than their professional relationship. He confesses to her that he has been very lonely for quite some time and he will not be able to clean up his mess unless he has a girlfriend. As the tale progresses Daniel meets up with a variety of women one of whom he does enter into a serious relationship, however, she likewise is on drugs and alcohol and to top it off is married to a drug dealer, who is insanely jealous to the point that Daniel's life is in danger.

Souby's detailed and emotionally honest portrayal of Daniel's desperation is right on the money and it takes the experience and knowledge of a recovering addict that makes an engrossing reading out of an entire novel focused on one character, which is precisely what Souby has accomplished with this novel. In addition, his deft touch with dialogue, feel for detail as well as his narrative pacing are all admirable, and when you combine this with his wisdom in understanding the depth of hopelessness of an addict, you have quite a memorable and insightful read. For many years Souby himself struggled with addiction and in an interview with Good News Planet Souby indicates that addiction and recovery have been the bedrock of his writing. He states that “in many ways it is the best metaphors for the human condition and he believes that all of our discontents in life are based on survival and the fear of not getting what we want.”

Brilliant. I rarely write reviews

Brilliant. I rarely write reviews, but I knew halfway through I would for this one.
The story is very unique. A really in-depth look into the mind and life of a heroin addict in SF. the writing style is reminiscent of John Steinbeck in my opinion- particularly Tortilla Flat, although some have said Ray Bradbury ( can you believe I haven't read his work??) . Anyway, Danny's hangouts and and friends and the chaotic state of his apartment are absolutely realistic. I got a real picture of incredible thick dellusions and the immense trap Danny found himself stuck in, cycling seemingly endlessly.
I love a story so action packed it would seem a saga, however the time passed was actually minimal.
I also read Winfred and its almost as if by a different author, the writing style is so different. I look forward to Mr. Souby's next book , to see the no doubt continued progression and refinement of his work.
A must read for something totally different and compelling.

Charles Souby's gift as a storyteller shines in A SHOT OF MALARIA

In A SHOT OF MALARIA author Charles Souby introduces us to Daniel Martin, a man that is not just battling his own demons but trying to figure out the world in which he lives. Thanks to people that he meets along the way he is taught some valuable lessons, but will he be able to learn from them and become the man he wants to be? That is just one of the questions he must confront.

What the author does so well in this book is showcases how even in fiction readers are able to see the truth of the world and our own lives. What Daniel is trying to figure out in his life is not so different from what so many of us are trying to discover. the main question is are we willing to do the work necessary to get the answers.

Definitely a book that will make you smile and think, Charles Souby has given readers a thoughtful experience with A SHOT OF MALARIA.

The value of life, no matter how damaged.

The author took some unique elements and created a beautiful story of Lena and Chad, two people who have their own broken pieces yet never gave up on their dreams and found they could be useful in life, even when they didn’t know how. This is part of a series but can be read as a stand-alone, I have not read the other books and I was not lost at all with Hero by Night and even found I wanted to go back and grab the other books once I was finished.
Lena was a war hero, she had returned home after some devastating times in the war. Her body might be in one piece, but her mind is shattered into millions of fragmented pieces. With nightmares, anxiety, fears and longing to just be normal again, she doesn’t find a lot of support from her family and husband. With a duffle bag of belongings, a gun in her purse and her service dog Hero, she sets off to find her perfect place in life so she can heal and find her way back to a new normal that awaits her. I loved that she never stopped fighting, even when the world didn’t see it, she clung to the idea that she would be a normal woman again who would enjoy being touched, loved and the fear of people would subside. The author did a wonderful job at showing us just how much Lena had to overcome, with the fear of being around people and needing Hero by her side a job was going to be hard to find. With the anxiety of being touched, parties and relationships were going to be traumatic for her in everyday life. With no home to call her own, finding a place that will allow Hero to stay with her was near impossible without friends, but then you don’t want to take advantage of that friendship either. She knew what she needed to do, but did she have to tools or chances to make that first step?

Chad is what you would consider a man whore and he didn’t deny that fact. He would sleep with anything that was willing and never made fake promises of forever. Some women went into that arrangement only to come out feeling love and devastated that he wouldn’t commit. Other women were fine in using him for one night to satisfy their need. Chad had his own demons to battle in life and his dream was to fly the helicopter for his business but his sleeping habits had soon become too much of risk for his company to allow him to keep flying. He was going to have to settle down, become respectable and stop his whoring ways. Some thought that wasn’t possible for Chad but if they could have seen him with Lena they would finally see the real gentleman behind the sexual mask he wore. He cared about her, he was astonished that she was able to reach out to him and touch his hand, but would he be able to keep that space between them in order for her to feel safe while he helped her?

Now here is where the message of the story hit me. We have two broken people, dealing with their own issues yet they were the perfect cure for each other. Lena would have never believed in her condition she would have been helpful to anyone. She was a shattered mess after serving her country. Chad would have never believed he could step back from the sexual fixes he so craved and calmed Lena’s anxieties and make her feel safe. From out ward appearances, these two were a disaster waiting to happen but compassion, love and friendship prevailed and began the healing in Lena and Chad. It was a beautiful story to read and embrace with laughter, tears, pain and hope. It is a story of healing and never allowing yourself to think you are worthless to everyone. People have a special gift that is needed by another human, it is up to us to find that gift and offer it, knowing the risks involved yet still being willing to give it. Brilliantly written, full of emotion and understanding, characters that could be connected with and a powerful message that every person has value and hope, what more could a reader want from a story?

Doesn't Get Much Better Than This

This was a recommended book to me since they knew I went for books that have military in them. It opens with Lena the lead female character and her story is the basis for this one. As in that I mean what happened to her and make-up of personality with the road she is on now. Now that she is no longer a active member in the military her adjustment is still on going. She also has a constant companion who is gorgeous and the only one at this time she can tolerate at her side-Hero, the four legged kind. Thanks to her friend she is now in Independence Falls trying to get back what was stolen from her in her own time, in a way that works for her. This is also a turn around for me to read because I am usually reading about this as in the guy's viewpoint or that the guy is the one usually presented that this happens to. When my cousin was going through this in the early 80's it was still hush hush but now more and more being revealed and more help so they are not lost or forgotten. Lena suffers from PTSD severely but thanks to how the author has formed this character will not let it be the victor in this battle she is in now. Here she is offered a place for as long as she needs but thanks to a mix-up while sleeping she is awaken by the town's charmer-Chad. Having met him earlier they are not exactly strangers though. This will be the door opened into the start of some unconventional paths of healing for her and a challenge of a different kind for him. Once I got caught up in the scheme of things and the interaction between these two I was pretty much a goner being lassoed along as the pages turned. Chad is exposed for being a better man than most really see being with Lena who makes great strides herself. They bring out the best in each other by simply loving and being with each other. Love heals all things as demonstrated in here quite clearly. She will find more and more of the pieces she was searching for while he gives more than he has ever given before and when faced with a hair raising situation near the end (mine still kinda sticking up) things will never be the same again. When I finally reached the end of this journey I slumped back in my chair with satisfactory grin. Refreshing perspective filled with heat doesn't get much better than this.

Hero by Night is a heart warming romance that is full of heat and oh so sweet!

If I could give this book more than 5 stars I would. Hero by Night by Sara Jane Stone is quite possibly the best book I’ve read this year to date (I read close to 50 books last month, so this is no small statement). Hero by Night is a heart warming romance that is full of heat and oh so sweet!

Lena has moved to Independence Falls to rebuild her life and reclaim her sense of self. She is a war Veteran suffering from a very severe case of PTSD. She has her service dog, Hero to help with her recovery, but she needs more. Chad is a playboy and he needs to clean up his image, his helicopter is grounded

He needs to tame his reputation and finding a serious girlfriend will help him get back into the cockpit of his helicopter. Chad is the first person’s touch, since she returned from service that’s touch hasn’t sent her fleeing in the opposite direction. These two strike a deal, Lena will pretend to be Chad’s girlfriend and he will work to help her overcome some of her anxiety and try to feel normal again. Chad may have the reputation of a playboy, but this playboy has a heart of gold and the patience of a saint. Lena may think she is damaged, but Chad see’s her as a beautiful warrior that may end up taking a piece of his heart.

I LOVED this book from the first page to the last page. This is book #3 in Sara Jane Stone’s Independence Falls series, but this story can totally stand alone. However, I do recommend the first two books in this series and if you have read them you will appreciate visiting with Georgia & Eric from Full Exposure- Independence Falls Book #1, and Katie & Liam from Caught in the Act- Independence Falls Books #2. The author also does a lovely job setting up the story for Book #4 in this series Wild With You, set for release in April 2015.
