Brit Garner woke to the irritating rattle of her cell phone vibrating against her bedside table. She pulled the pillow over her head and tried to ignore it. It finally stopped only to start again a few seconds later. If this was her partner, she was going to kill him.

She checked the caller ID and then took the call. "This had better be of life-threatening importance, Rick Drummond."

"Not life threatening, but I think you better get down to the morgue."

"What part of 'I'm on vacation with plans to sleep until noon every day' do you not understand?"

"I get it. You've worked your gorgeous butt off the past few months. But I think you'll want to see this."

"I've seen dead bodies before." Too many of them, which was why she needed a few well-deserved days off. A walk in a park or along the beach would do wonders for her state of mind. Time to read a book or visit friends would be heaven.

Her dad had warned her it would be like this.

"Just come down. No work involved. I really think you should see this."

"Why is it so urgent I see this particular body?"

"Just get down here, Brit. I'll buy you coffee and breakfast after."

"A real breakfast. No coffee and doughnut on the fly."

"Anything you want—under ten bucks, of course."

"Splurging and secrecy. You're starting to freak me out. I'll be there as soon as I can throw on some clothes. Not work clothes. I'm on vacation, remember?"

"Hard to forget when you keep bringing it up every ten seconds. Come on up to Autopsy when you get here."

Brit kicked off the top sheet and stretched her legs over the side of the bed. She went to the bathroom, splashed her face with cold water and brushed her teeth. After that she shed her nightshirt and wiggled into a pair of faded jeans and a long-sleeved green T-shirt. A quick brush of her long hair and she was ready.

She'd go to the morgue but, no matter how interesting the case, she wouldn't let Rick sway her to jump in. She really needed the time off. And not only to rejuvenate, but also to try to figure out where she'd gone wrong on a very important case.

The colder a case got the harder it was to solve. She'd been working on her father's murder for three years without a decent lead. She had to be overlooking a key element. No murder was perfect.

Less than a half hour later, she was walking into the autopsy section of the morgue. The facilities were state-of-the-art and as familiar as her neighborhood grocery store, though the odors were far more unpleasant.

Her partner, Rick, was standing next to the gray examining table. Her favorite pathologist, Elise Laugh-ton, was at the other side of the table and slipping out of her gloves.

"Looks like she put up a hell of a fight," Elise said. "Evidently she was just no match for the strength of her attacker."

"Cause of death?" Brit asked by way of greeting, determined to stick to the basics.

"You made good time," Elise said, looking up.

"Traffic was light. And as you can see, I didn't bother with makeup since I'm not sticking around long."

Elise shared a concerned look with Rick and then looked back to her. "To answer your original question, the evidence includes new bruising on the hands and arms and having her throat slashed."

Another morning in Houston. Not that all murders weren't bad, but any detective in the department could handle this, including Rick. There had to be something more going on for him to call her in this morning.

"So start talking, Rick, and this had better be good."

Rick frowned. "Take a look."

Brit stepped closer for an unobstructed view of the body. An icy chill seeped deep inside her as she studied the victim.

She could have been staring into a mirror. The lifeless victim spread out on the cold metal slab looked exactly like her.

Chapter Two

One Week Later

"How about passing that potato salad before Leif goes back for seconds and doesn't leave any for the rest of us?" Travis joked.

"Look who's talking," Leif said as he handed down the serving bowl. "You've been hogging the platter of fried chicken like a starving man."

"That's 'cause I had him out baling hay all afternoon," Adam said. "Nothing like a little ranch work to build up an appetite."

"Save room for the apple pie a la mode," Hadley said. "I made it myself and I'll be insulted if there's a bite left on a dish."

"Ice cream!" four-year-old Lacy added. She pushed her plate back. "I want mine now."

"Me, too," R.J. said, "but I better clean my plate first. You better eat a few more bites of dinner, too."

R.J. smiled and leaned back in his chair. There was a time not so many months ago that he'd have been sitting at this table all alone. Or passed out somewhere skunk drunk. Now he was alcohol-free, thankful to be surrounded by family. Best medicine in the world for a dying man.

He didn't have much of an appetite these days, even though his daughters-in-law Hadley and Faith had become dadgum good cooks. His third daughter-in-law, Joni, was too busy being the best dang vet in the state of Texas to spend much time in the kitchen.

Besides, he suspected she might be pregnant. She'd turned green and rushed away from the breakfast table a couple of days ago and she'd developed a little swell in the belly. He wouldn't ask. She'd tell them all when she was ready.

It had been over a year now since the neurosurgeon had given R.J. the death sentence. A malignant, inoperable brain tumor that would eventually take his life. For some miraculous reason, the tumor had decided to slow down a bit and give R.J. time to enjoy his family—the family he'd never bothered to get to know when he was drinking and carousing like the SOB he'd been for most of his life.

He'd given little thought to contacting his estranged kids until the grim reaper had looked him square in the eye and chuckled. But getting to know Adam, Leif and Travis and their families had given his life more meaning than he'd thought possible. Why, already there had been three weddings on the Dry Gulch Ranch. Fortunately, none of them his. Four weddings were enough for any one man.

Still, with each passing day, the longing grew stronger to connect with his other three children. So far, no luck there. His youngest son, Cannon, was either too resentful or too busy with his bull riding to give R.J. the time of day.

His daughter, Jade, was the baby of the family, though she was in her early twenties now. The only times he'd seen her was when she came to the ranch for the reading of the will. She hadn't cared much for his requirement that a beneficiary would have to spend a year living on and helping work the Dry Gulch Ranch to get a share in his estate. Hadn't seemed too pleased that he'd had the reading of the will while he was still breathing, either.

Had let him know it, too, in no uncertain terms. As feisty a hellcat as her mother had been. The ranch had never offered enough excitement for Kiki. Apparently it didn't for their daughter, Jade, either.

And that left his oldest son, Jake, rich Texas rancher and oilman. The wealth inherited from his mother's side of the family. Jake had everything a man could want. Fancy cars. Private jets. Gorgeous women half his age draped across him in every picture of him that appeared on the society pages of the Dallas Morning News.

Jake had moved on so far he couldn't even see R.J. in his mind's rearview mirror. No doubt his mother had done the same. Stupidest mistake R.J. had ever made was letting her walk away. He wondered what she was like now. He still pictured her as young and beautiful as she'd been at eighteen when they'd married. Best-looking girl in the small country high school they'd attended. Hell, she was probably the best-looking girl in all of Texas back then.

The doorbell rang.

"Are you expecting company tonight?" Faith asked.

"Nope," R.J. said. "Probably a neighbor stopping by."

"I'll get it," Adam offered, already scooting back from the table.

"You just keep eatin'," R.J. said. "I need a little exercise. Old bones get stiff if I sit too long."

He held on to the edge of the table for extra support as he stood. Never knew when one of those dizzy spells would hit. He ambled to the door, taking his time about it. The doorbell rang again.

"Hold your horses. I'm coming."

He swung open the door and stared into the bluest eyes he'd ever seen. He took in the rest of the stranger, enjoying the tour. He might be near dead. But just because he couldn't sample the wares didn't mean he couldn't window-shop.

"You must be lost," he said, sure he'd never seen the tall, willowy strawberry blonde before.

"Is this the Dry Gulch Ranch?"

"Was the last time I looked at the sign over the gate."

"Are you R. J. Dalton?"

"Yep. You're batting a thousand so far."

"Then I'm not lost." A baby whimpered.

R.J. followed the sound to a baby carrier resting on the porch, next to the stranger's right foot. The young woman reached down and grabbed the handle, lifting the carrier so that he could see the adorable infant peeking from beneath a yellow blanket. The baby kicked and made a few boxing moves with its tiny fists.

"And who might this be?" R.J. asked.

"This is your three-month-old granddaughter, Kimmie."

"My granddaughter. Well, don't that just beat all?"

"Yes, it does." She pushed the carrier toward him. When he didn't take it, she set it on the floor inside the door.

"Come on in," R.J. urged, opening the door even wider.

"No, thank you. I'm just here to drop off Kimmie."

"What do you mean drop her off?"

"Just that. I'm leaving her in your care."

"You can't do that. I'm a sick man. I can't take care of a baby." Had never done that when he was young and healthy.

"Then I suggest you hire someone to take care of her or call your son Cannon and tell him to stop by and pick up his daughter."

So Cannon was playing around with more than bulls. A chip off the old block. But the old block had made a lifetime of mistakes.

"Why don't you go tell Cannon that yourself?"

"I don't have time at the moment to go chasing down some irresponsible bull rider."

Apparently not time to raise her child, either.

She pulled a business card and an envelope from her pocket. "If Cannon has questions, he can reach me at this number. Inside the envelope, you'll find everything you need to know about caring for Kimmie."

"I'm gonna need a lot more than some notes."

"Yes, you'll need this to get you started." The woman slid a large canvas tote from her shoulder and handed it to him, as well. "There's formula, bottles, diapers and a few changes of clothing inside."

"You got a momma for her in there, too?"

The woman didn't answer, but he could swear those striking blue eyes of hers were moist when she turned and walked away.

She stopped just before she reached her car. "I play classical music for Kimmie when she gets fussy. It calms her down."

There was a definite quiver in her voice but no hesitation as she got into her car and drove away.

Once her taillights disappeared, R.J. took a look at the card she'd pressed into his left hand.

Brittany Garner, Homicide Detective, Houston Police Department.

Cannon sure knew how to pick them. Gorgeous, sexy and she could handle a weapon. All good traits in a woman—unless she turned the gun on you.

R.J. was still staring at the newest addition to the family when his daughter-in-law Hadley joined him at the door. She stopped and stared at the baby. "Oh, my gosh. Look how adorable."

Hadley reached down, unbuckled the baby from her chair and picked her up, all the while gushing baby talk.

"Hello, little sweetie. Did you just drop from heaven and land at our door?"

"Something like that," R.J. said.

Hadley's eyebrows arched. She dropped the baby talk. "What are you talking about? Who is this?"

"Name's Kimmie, or so her mother said."

"Who's her mother?"

"Apparently a lady cop."

"What do you mean apparently? You must know whose baby this is?" Hadley walked to the door and looked out. "Where is her mom?"

"Gone back to Houston, I s'pect."

"Without her baby? What's going on here?"

"Supposedly this is my granddaughter."

"Who's the father?"

"Allegedly, it's Cannon, but I bet he's gonna be as surprised about this as we are."

R.J. smiled in spite of the situation. Not the ideal bargaining tool, but it was one way to get Cannon back to the Dry Gulch Ranch. His neighbor Caroline Lambert was right. God sure worked in mysterious ways.

Chapter Three

Macabre kicked his way out of the creaky gate with a vengeance that sent adrenaline exploding through Cannon's veins. One. Two.

The bull bucked wildly. The rope dug into Cannon's gloved hand. His lucky Stetson went flying. Bad omen. Three. Four.

The crowd's cheers mingled with the thunderous stamping of the bull's hooves and the frantic beating of Cannon's heart.

Five.

Cannon's body shifted and began to slide. Instinct took over. He struggled to hang on, leaning hard, fighting to shift his weight.

Macabre's fierce back hooves propelled the animal's powerful muscles, twisting and spinning the two-ton mass of fury. The rope slipped. White-hot pain ripped through Cannon's shoulder.

He was on the ground. The rank breath of the snorting bull burned in his own nostrils. Flying dirt blinded him. He blinked, covered his head with his hands and rolled away.

Shouts from the rodeo clown echoed though the arena, but the bull didn't back off. It swerved and came back at Cannon.

Cannon rolled in the opposite direction. The crowd gasped in unison as one hoof came so close to his head that Cannon could feel the vibrations rattle inside his skull.

Then the bull turned and went after the clown. Cannon owed Billy Cox big-time.

He picked himself up, grabbed his hat and waved it to the crowd as he scrambled back to safety. Cox was safe, as well. Only then did Cannon check the results.

Seven seconds.

Disappointment burned inside him. One more second and he would have scored big. He'd drawn Macabre, the most vicious of the bulls on tonight's docket. The animal that could have put Cannon in pay dirt.

Already December, one of the last of the rodeos in what had been a great year for Cannon. Still, he could have used that prize money. Like most rodeo addicts who loved bull riding, the day would come when he'd have to retire. He'd need mucho cash to do that right.

What was a cowboy without a ranch?

"Bad luck," one of the other riders said.

"I'd say good luck," another said. "You could have been leaving here in an ambulance tonight."

"Seven seconds on Macabre should be worth ten on any of the other bulls in the chute tonight."

Cannon acknowledged the comments with a nod and a shrug. Nothing else was needed. They all knew the disappointment of losing to a bull.

"Mighty tough way to make a living."

The voice was unfamiliar, gruff, but with a rattle that came with lots of years of living. Cannon turned to see who'd spoken.

Reality sent a shot of acid straight to his gut. As if tonight hadn't already been bad enough.

"What are you doing here?" Cannon asked.

"I came to see my son ride," R.J. said. "No law against that, is there?"

Probably should be. "You've seen me," Cannon said.

"Now what?"

"We need to talk," R.J. said.

Cannon wasn't interested in pretending he had any fatherly feelings for a man who hadn't given a damn about him when he could have used his help. And he wouldn't play any part in the old man's search for redemption before he died.

Actually, he'd figured R.J. was already dead by now. Or maybe everything he'd said about the inoperable brain tumor at the bizarre reading of his will had been lies. He wouldn't put anything past R. J. Dalton.

"I know you have no use for me," R.J. continued. "I probably deserve that. We still need to talk. And I have someone you should meet."

"Look, R.J., you had your say at the reading of your will. I wasn't interested then. I'm still not. I don't play games."

"Looks like you were playing a potentially deadly one tonight."

"That's work, not a game. And it's my business."

"So is what I have to tell you."

"Then spit it out."

"Okay. You think I'm a lousy father. I agree. But unless I miss my guess, you're about to get the chance to prove you're a hundred times better at it than I ever was."

"I don't know what you're talking about."

Love this series
By paula legate
I really enjoyed this book. It is the 4th book in a series. Each book could be read as a standalone. R. J was not a good father. Now that he has a brain tumor, he wants to get to know his sons. The sons has a lot of resentment towards R.J. In each book one of the sons comes around, and the family keeps growing. I also loved the suspense of each book.
In this book Britney was about to take her very first vacation. She is a homicide detective. She gets called to the morgue. When she gets there she sees a mirror image of herself. She had no idea she had a twin sister. Shortly after she gets attacked. She is ordered off the case. Her sister had a 3 month old daughter. The father who is a cowboy that rides bulls has no idea that he is a dad. I loved how protective Cannon was, and how he watched over Britney throughout the book. The two worked to solve the murder, and throughout the book their friendship grew into love. She may have been ordered off the attack, but she just couldn't sit by, and do nothing. She was determined to get answers.

Great book. Can't wait for the next one.

The Bull Rider and the Cop
By Ellen Parker
From the moment Detective Brit Garner stares at the body of her twin sister in the morgue, I was hooked. In addition to the mystery of her death, her sister leaves a baby – and instructions to take the child to her father.
Cannon Dalton has plans for his future. An infant daughter and reconciliation with his father are not included. He has doubts the child is his, but consents to the paternity testing. He wants information, thinking Brit holds the key, he goes to talk to her.
Brit’s in danger. She manages to wound the man attacking her in her own home but the department demands she take time off to recover from injuries and gain distance from her sister’s case. Cannon sees an opportunity to get his answers and takes her to his father’s ranch, where his extended and estranged family is caring for his daughter.
Family secrets, revenge, and crime for hire combine for an excellent read.

ANOTHER WINNER FOR JOANNA WAYNE
By Fran
I love to read this author's books and this series is really good. I like suspense like this it's not heavy and not too long. Her characters are well developed and I love the dialogue between them and The story is well written. You can read what the book is about in the description so I don't have to explain it which i'm bad at. I hope there are at least 2 more books in this series The Daltons. Harlequin Intrigue and H. Romantic Suspense have the most sexiest men on their covers than anyone else. I don't know where they find them but you ought to check out their covers. Read all 4 books so you get to know the family. You won't be able to put them down

Lady Pen, by E. C. Bilder

"Lady Pen" is designed to be a whimsical tale of magic and adventure. It centers on a retired lady and her two beloved cats, Nova and Adolph. The lady loves to write, and she always addresses her pen as if it were a living being, helping her with the magic of the words. One evening, after the retired lady leaves the room, lo and behold, the pen comes to life! She introduces herself to Nova and Adolph as Lady Pen, and instructs them not to tell anyone about her, even though she gives them the ability to speak. Instead, she asks them to meet her later that night for a wonderful adventure. When midnight comes, Lady Pen takes Nova and Adolph throughout various settings of great natural beauty. She introduces them to a variety of mythical creatures, with whom the cats have a great party and a hotly contested race. When the wizard Zadwir appears and tries to ruin the party, he does so by challenging the cats to another race. They are triumphant, and as dawn rises and the cats return home, they do so eager for their next adventure. "Lady Pen" may be of particular interest to young readers who are cat lovers. In addition, because of its message about looking beneath the surface to see beauty and meaning. It may appeal to parents as well. -Jean Wahlborg, Editorial Coordinator Dorrance Publishing Company

OK but not a barn burner
By Joel L. Gandelman
I buy a lot of books and usually don't review a book unless I really like it. I have this on my kindle. I'm reading the affirmations but some of them are just so basic and simple I don't feel this is extraordinary or provides any major insight. Just OK is an accurate rating. Not a barn burner and will not inspire you to new heights of introspection.

It's okay, but honestly, you can go online and google positive sayings and find different sayings. Too many sayings are too similar..

Men of Courage: Trapped!\Buried!\Stranded! (Harlequin The Hero Collection), by Lori Foster, Donna Kauffman, Jill Shalvis

Three sexy stories together in one collection, for the first time!

The men are heroes—strong, fearless…

Fireman Ethan Winters ran headlong into a burning building to find Rosie Carrington. Rescue worker Brett Gannon defied the aftershocks of a San Francisco earthquake to prevent Haley Brubaker from entering her collapsing home. And emergency-room doctor Matt Walker braved gale force winds and rising floodwater to rescue scientist Molly Stanton.

And impossible to resist!

For Rosie, the heat in Ethan's eyes was enough to start a three-alarm blaze! As for Haley, being trapped amidst the rubble with Brett meant heightened tension—and heightened passion. And sheltering together from the storm, Molly needed Matt to make love to her. It was the only way for her to know she was still alive…and that she'd stay that way.

Ethan Winters jerked awake with a start. His heart slammed into his ribs, his head ached, his eyeballs felt gritty and his mouth tasted like sawdust. Still, despite all that, he realized several things at once.

Most noteworthy was the woman in his bed. Yep, that very shapely slim leg draped over his belly was definitely of the feminine variety, not to mention the small, delicate hand resting over his heart. Ethan looked at that hand, but with his eyes so fried, it didn't look like any particular woman's hand. Just a hand. A female hand.

Yeah, okay, so he was in bed with a woman. No big deal. He'd figure that one out soon enough. Since he wore no shoes and no shirt, only slacks that were unsnapped and unzipped—he knew that because he could feel her warm thigh on his skin—it stood to reason that the female was only half-dressed, too. That could mean several things, but likely only meant one thing.

So what? He was thirty years old, single, free to do as he damn well pleased, never mind that he didn't remember what the hell had pleased him.

With the sun so bright through the window, he realized it had to be midmorning. A quick glance at the clock showed it to be eight-forty. What time had he gotten into bed? the incessant pounding on his front door, now getting louder, had probably awakened him, not the soft woman clinging to him.

Groaning with the effort, Ethan raised his head off the pillow to look at her. All he could see was a luxurious tangle of silvery-brown hair. She had her nose stuck close to his side, practically in his armpit, and she wore his uniform dress shirt—a shirt that didn't quite cover the satiny peach panties stretched over a very fine ass.

He didn't remember giving her his shirt and he sure as hell didn't remember either of them undressing. He reached for her hair, ready to brush aside the heavy mass so he could at least figure out her identity, when the pounding on his front door started again. The woman stirred, then stretched awake, arching her body into his, raising her hands high above her head. Ethan stirred, too, despite being horribly hungover and in pain. Whoever was at the door could just damn well wait. He smiled down at the woman, anxious to see her, to have the mystery solved.

She rolled onto her back with a sleepy little moan.

Ethan leaped out of bed so fast his head spun and he nearly dropped to his knees. No. Hell, no.

His shaky legs continued to try to give out on him and his heart shot into his throat, making him dangerously close to barfing. He grabbed the footboard for support, swallowed hard, found his voice and shouted, ''What the hell. Rosie!''

The smile faded off her face. Very slowly she peeked open one smoky-blue eye and groaned. ''Shut up, Ethan. My head is splitting.''

He sputtered, heard the continued noise at his front door, and nearly panicked. ''Get out of my bed.''

The look she sent his way wasn't nice. Rather than obey, she rolled onto her stomach and nestled into the pillows. ''I need coffee.''

Unbound, her hair was glorious, but it wasn't long enough to cover her rump. Ethan stared.

Oh, God. What to do? Rosie. His Rosie. His longtime friend, a woman he'd grown up with, his ex-best friend's little sister…

Damn she looked good.

No. No she did not. He squeezed his eyes shut to block out the view of her sprawled in his bed, the sight of her plump bottom turned up for him to see, the long length of those legs. He'd seen her legs before, of course. She wore shorts, even the occasional swimsuit. But he hadn't seen her legs in his bed. Not once. Not ever.

Surely he hadn't… Of course he hadn't. Ethan snorted. What a ridiculous thought. Why, if he'd done anything with Rosie, he'd remember it, and besides, he wouldn't do anything with Rosie. She was practically like family. Practically. Not quite, but close enough.

Reassured with his own thoughts, he opened his eyes again—but to be safe he didn't look directly at her. ''Stay put.''

Rosie grunted but otherwise didn't reply.

Ethan slipped out of the bedroom on unsteady legs and pulled the door shut behind him. Whoever loitered at his front door was making a horrid racket and if he woke up all the neighbors, they'd give Ethan fits.

He crossed the living room, jerked the door open and was met with the sight of Riley Moore, Harris Black and Buck Bosworth. Without being invited, they pushed their way in. Ethan cast a quick glance at the hallway, but all was secure. The very last thing he wanted was for the guys to know Rosie had spent the night.

They wouldn't believe that nothing had happened. Hell, he wouldn't have believed it. ''What do you guys want? As you can see, you've interrupted my beauty sleep.''

Harris snickered. ''You'd need to hibernate for a whole winter to improve that mug.''

Buck shook his head pityingly. ''i knew you were crocked last night, but you must have really fried the old gray matter if you don't remember our fishing day.''

Fishing. Oh, hell, he didn't want to fish. Ethan held his splitting head and took two deep breaths. ''i've gotta pass today. I can barely stay on my feet.''

Riley, the most serious of the three, gave an aggrieved sigh. ''i told you last night to quit drinking. I told you to give it up and get over it. But, no, you wouldn't. So now you have to pay the consequences. Go get dressed. We're not leaving without you.''

Ethan stiffened. He couldn't credit Riley's nerve, bringing up such a touchy subject. They all knew he didn't want to talk about it. ''Go to hell. Me, i m going back to bed. He winced at his own statement. Rosie was in his bed.

''Nope. Riley sat and propped his big feet on the cluttered coffee table, knocking a newspaper and a Chinese food container to the floor. ''I'm sick of you feeling sorry for yourself. It's been well over a year. Enough already.''

Buck and Harris, both silent, both cautious, looked back and forth while following the conversation.

Ethan clenched his teeth. ''Drop it, Riley.'' ''I will when you do.''

''It's none of your damn business.'' Ethan didn t mean to shout, and, in fact, immediately regretted it when his brain throbbed in pain and his stomach pitched. He rubbed his hands over his face, trying to convince himself he could physically throw Riley out without puking, when a feminine voice suddenly intruded.

''They're your friends, Ethan. Of course it's their business.

Oh, God.

Riley's feet hit the floor with a thud. Buck's and Harris's chins almost did the same. Ethan groaned. Through his fingers, he looked at Rosie.

Bless the supreme powers that be, she d had the foresight to at least wrap herself in a sheet.

His shirt covered her upper parts and her lower parts were covered by toga-wrapped linen. Her hair was wild, though, her blue eyes heavy, her cheeks still flushed with sleep.

All three men turned to stare at Ethan. Their expressions ranged from censure to appalled fascination to extreme curiosity.

That was all it took.

''Excuse me a minute, will ya?'' Hoping to preserve what little dignity he still possessed, Ethan forced himself to walk to the bathroom, slam the door and lock it. He needed privacy for the next fifteen minutes while he worshiped the porcelain god, praying it was a dream, hoping against hope that when he emerged everyone would be gone—especially Rosie—and his brain could stop pulsing long enough to let him catch his breath.

He was hanging on to the toilet, his head spinning, when he heard footsteps outside the door. ''Ethan?''

He sat back on the cold ceramic-tiled floor and propped himself against the side of the tub, eyes closed. Breathing was a chore, thinking more so. He did not want to talk. ''Go away, Rosie.

He expected a sharp comeback, a refusal. Hell, he half expected her to knock the door down.

Through the years he d known her, Rosie had shown a knack for doing just as she damn well pleased without unnecessary consideration for what anyone else thought. She was headstrong, opinionated, independent—and she'd been in his bed.

After a few expectant moments when nothing happened, Ethan tensed with new foreboding. His eyes opened and he stared at the locked door. Rosie hadn t done anything. Had she actually left when he d asked her to? Or rather, when he d rudely ordered her to? Had he hurt her feelings?

Had he had sex with her?

His stomach more unsettled than ever, Ethan pushed himself upright and stuck his head out the bathroom door. He didn t hear a single sound.

''Riley?

Ten seconds passed, then, ''What?'' Riley leaned around the hallway, looked Ethan over, and made a disgusted face.

''Did Rosie leave?

''She s making breakfast.

''Oh.'' That figured. If he wasn't so hungover, he d have remembered that Rosie wasn t a sensitive girly-girl. In fact, she was pretty damn tough. . . for a female. So of course he hadn t hurt her feelings.

He hadn t slept with her, either.

''It's not what you're thinking,'' Ethan mumbled to Riley, who continued to look at him as if he was lower than a worm. ''Get your mind out of the gutter, will ya?

Riley crossed his arms over his chest and flattened his mouth. ''She said for you to shower and join us.

And Rosie being Rosie, she fully expected to be obeyed. ''Yeah, all right.''

''She said you have ten minutes.

Annoyed, Ethan slammed the door. He'd take as long as he damn well pleased, and that was that. Hell, the woman didn't own him. Just because she d awakened in his bed didn t mean she could start thinking about bossing him around.

Course, she always bossed him around. And most of the time he let her. Though she was four years younger, they d been friends forever, through high school and college. They d remained close friends through the death of her parents, through his long engagement.

They d even stayed friends after her brother had run off with his fiancée, leaving him literally stranded at the altar nineteen months ago.

Naked, Ethan stepped beneath a stinging spray of hot water and clenched his teeth against the surge of discomfort that radiated to his limbs. He braced his hands on the tiled wall, dropped his head forward and closed his eyes.

God, if he d had sex with her, he didn t know if they could remain friends. Rosie was a marrying kind of woman, not a one-night stand. And he would never consider marriage again.

What the hell had he done?

''How many eggs do you guys want?''

''Two. ''Three.

''Rosie, Riley said with a long, exaggerated sigh, ''what s going on?

Rosie Carrington glanced over her shoulder at Riley. He was a big man, so she cracked three eggs for him, same as Harris. ''I m just making breakfast, Riley. No big deal.

''Yeah, right. Just making breakfast—at Ethan's, dressed in his shirt, probably on the proverbial morning after.

''You re too smart to make assumptions, Riley.

Harris and Buck looked at each other, then snorted. Oh, they d made plenty of assumptions, all right. Not that she blamed them. It was a rather damning situation.

Riley paid them no mind. ''Okay, so what are you doing here? Last I saw Ethan at the party, he was flirting with that sexy redhead and you were fuming mad at him for, as you put it, acting like an ass again.

Rosie concentrated on not overcooking the eggs. Last night. . . well, she had been fuming mad. Come to that, she was still a little peeved. Most of the time Ethan was the best man around, easy to respect, easier to love. He was hardworking, levelheaded, conscientious. A firefighter with a moral code bone-deep. True, he d become something of a hound dog, but a good-natured one nonetheless.

Yet whenever people brought up his ex-fiancée, he went from being a great guy to a shallow, chauvinistic jerk who grabbed the first available woman. Rosie assumed he did that to prove to everyone that he was over his fiancée, that he'd recovered. The opposite was true. It showed that he was still hurting—and that hurt her.

It had been over a year and a half, for crying out loud. She d had enough. It was time to take matters into her own hands.

Rosie knew the men were uncomfortable to have found her here. If all went as she planned, they d just have to get used to it. Besides, she was now decently covered—sort of—in a ratty old housecoat that she'd located in Ethan's closet.

''You re being evasive, Rosie.

''Gee, Riley, I m twenty-six years old. I thought that meant I didn t have to answer to anyone for my personal life.

Harris scratched his head, making his black hair more disheveled than ever. ''You and Ethan have a personal life?

She ignored him as she poked a fork at the pound of sizzling bacon in the cast-iron skillet. Four men, all of them big bruisers, needed a lot of food to maintain their energy levels. ''You know, I'm amazed you guys planned to go fishing all day without breakfast. It s the most important meal of the day. You shouldn t skip it.

The men smirked at that ludicrous comment. As firefighters, Ethan and Harris kept in the peak of health. Their jobs allowed nothing less. Buck owned a lumberyard and physical labor was part of his daily work week. He had muscles on his muscles.

And Riley—Rosie peered at him again. Riley was an evidence technician for the police department. A former member of the SWAT team, he now owned a self-defense studio where he taught sparring, grappling, Jeet Kune Do and Silat knife fighting.

Next to Ethan, Riley was the most intriguing, appealing man she knew. He could break a person in two without effort. But more often than not, he was as gentle as a lamb—especially where women were concerned.

There wasn't much call for a SWAT team in the small city of Chester, Ohio, thank God, but Riley had only lived here about five years. Before that, he d evidently suffered some bad times, not that he ever spoke of it much. He tended to be a very quiet man.

Except for now, when he chose to badger Ro-sie.

''I think we'll all survive fishing on an empty stomach. Riley s voice was dry, teasing.

''Now you won't have to.''

Harris leaned forward, sniffing the eggs. ''This ll be better than the pork rinds Buck packed.

Buck shoved him in the shoulder. ''I ll just eat them all myself then.

''Hey. Harris acted wounded by Buck s selfishness. ''You know I was just placating Rosie.

After wrinkling her nose at the lot of them, Rosie began toasting bread. She had half a loaf out and hoped that'd be enough. Ethan wasn't much on domesticity and therefore didn t have an abundance of groceries. His apartment was a pigsty, his kitchen a disaster and his cabinets all but empty.

She glanced at the clock. She d give the big coward two more minutes tops, then she d drag him out of the shower whether he wanted to face them all or not. If he was still naked and wet—well, she wouldn t cavil. In fact, the idea appealed to her.

Dragging him out proved unnecessary when not five seconds later Ethan appeared in the doorway. His mellow brown eyes were bloodshot, his blond hair still wet and only finger-combed, his feet bare. He d pulled on clean jeans and a gray T-shirt, and to Rosie, he looked better than breakfast.

Her heart felt full to bursting. ''You okay?

He sent her a cautious sneer, hooked a chair, yanked it out from the table and dropped heavily into it. ''I ll live, if that s what you mean. His mean, red-eyed look moved around the room to encompass each of his friends. ''I m not going fishing today.''

''Of course not.

''We understand.''

Boring Beyond Belief....No Action..No Drama..Flat....
By Tracy Talley
I am stunned.
I like Lori Foster and read this purposely because of her. Her story 'Trapped' was definately not her best work by a mile. Contrived and moved so fast I thought I was missing chapters, it had no spice or drama usual to a Foster novel. It lacked character development and story development.
Advertised as a firefighter named Ethan Winters bursting into a burning building to save his oldest friend Rose and realizing he loves her madly isn't what it really is. There is no 'trapped', there isn't even Ethan bursting into anyting remotely burning. The fire happens in the very end and is over in two pages. I repeat, NO one is trapped. Except maybe this story. Sorry Ms. Foster, you can do better...
Second in this book is 'Buried' by Donna Kauffman. Another yawn here. Who's buried? No one is buried in this story! The entire story is about an earthquake in San Francisco and a rescue worker who supposedly saves a woman 'buried' in the rubble. She was? Apparently I missed that entire section because it wasn't in my copy. Her DOG is buried somewhere and they work together to find it. What I'm wondering is when rescue workers are assigned to find pets in the rubble during disasters when these things first happen? Aren't they sent to rescue people first??? Bury this one in the rubble...
And third is Jill Shalvis's 'Stranded'. The only story where the title actually fits the storyline. But then, they are 'stranded' in the basement, so, go figure. A storm drives two characters into the basement and they are stuck there until someone can find them. There solution? Sex. If we have sex, we'll be okay. Okay....brilliant.
Men of Courage? Where? And there is another book coming out, July 2003! Skip this and save your money. The blurb on the back hypes it out to be this exciting and dramatic collection of stories aimed at some of the everyday heroes in our country, the firefighters, rescue workers and doctors. What we get is a contrived waste of time and money. You can find more drama watching the news...

A book full of TSTL heroes and heroines
By A Customer
Wow. I bought this book because I really enjoy the work of all three of the authors featured. This was obviously not their best work.
In "Trapped" by Lori Foster, the too stupid to live heroine finally decides to let the too stupid to live hero know that she's in love with him and has been forever. The TSTL hero, of course, realizes that he's in love with her (even though he's never had any romantic feelings about her before). There is no heroic rescue anywhere in this story, and as far as I can tell, no one is trapped anywhere.
In "Buried" by Donna Kauffman, the TSTL heroine disregards the fact that the area near her home is unstable after an earthquake and goes to rescue her dog (Hello!! It's a dog!) from her house which may have crumbled. The hero (who had a crush on the heroine years ago when his brother was dating her and is still in love with her) realizes that she's on her way to try to find her dog, and goes after her. Of course, he gets hurt after rescuing the dog, and the heroine moves in with him to help him while he recovers. While she's living with him, she of course decides that she's in love with him, which wraps this boring little story up.
In "Stranded" by Jill Shalvis, the cold-hearted hero who has no time for love rescues the TSTL heroine from a flood after she finds herself trapped because she was too stupid to go in out of the heavy rain. They stay in the cellar of the hero's beautiful but dilapidated home (which he inherited from his grandparents, and hates) and since they have nothing better to do, they decide to have sex. By the time the storm is over, they've realized that life ain't so bad, the hero loves his house and they love each other.
I think I'll skip the AMERICAN HEROES miniseries from Harlequin Temptation if this is what I have to look forward to.

Time Lost!
By maggie o'hayes
I just finished reading "Trapped" by Lori Foster and all I can think is...There's 2 hours I'll NEVER get back! I certainly have to agree with the reader from Bloomington about the TSTL hero & heroine, (I don't care how good looking Ms. Foster has made them out to be). Oh Please! This guy (shallow as he is) has known her (conceited as she is) all his life more or less and within a couple hours he's "discovered" that he loves her AND wants her to be the mother of his children. Maybe, and that's a big MAYBE, if this story could have been more in-depth, developed the characters, the history, and the storyline more it might have had a chance at mediocre. I read romance books occasionally in between some of the murder/mystery/thriller books I mostly read, to give my brain a rest from the serial killers. I'm hesitant to read the other stories in this book, not sure I want to escape a serial killer that badly. Think I'll stick to Nora Roberts from here on out.

Three men are each moving within the world of organized crime and subterfuge. Their motivations and desires differ, but each plays a part in a complex dance of corruption and greed.

Francis Cranford just discovered he has a twin—a US Air Force General worth $525 million dollars, earned solely because he was adopted into the right family and Francis wasn’t. The general is in debt to the Irish mafia, who plan to replace him with Francis and seize the dead twin’s wealth. They plan to kill off Francis as well, but neglect to let him in on that part of the plan.

Ty, the boss of the Belfast mafia, and leader of the Irish Republican Army, exerts influence as far away as the United States and the treacherous Gobi Desert. With plans to become the world’s financier, Ty’s in cahoots with jihadists—when he’s not trying to destroy his sometime allies. He craves world-wide dominance.

As for Bert, he’s a shady newscaster on the take. While covering stories on the underworld, he’s also farming acres of high-priced marijuana, used to finance criminal enterprises at home and abroad.

Three men, each with their own agendas, have fates that will intertwine, as each falls under the spell of ego, death, deception, and most of all....treasure.

Interwoven stories of suspense and political intrigue -- an engrossing and fascinating read!
By Chanticleer Book Reviews
Interwoven stories of suspense and political intrigue raise important questions about the ways in which we live our lives. An engrossing and fascinating novel!

In the 1930s, a homeless, pregnant teenager dies in a New York shelter after giving birth to twin, golden-haired boys, identical in every respect except for a disfiguring birthmark. One child is adopted into a wealthy family; the other one ends up in an orphanage. Kenneth grows into a handsome, privileged, and self-absorbed man; Francis lives a hardscrabble life, raging against his fate and determined to one day balance the scales.

Years later, Camille, a forty-something woman who has grown up in a loving family but has received more than her share of hard knocks in life, decides to spend the afternoon drinking in a tavern. There she meets a distinguished gentleman in his 60s, who introduces himself as Kenneth. They chat, and something clicks.

Kenneth, a retired general from the military, owns a huge ranch and has made a vast fortune off cattle and citrus groves. For seven months, Camille dates the man of her dreams, believing that her luck has finally changed. Or has it? Is Kenneth who he says he is? For that matter, is Camille the woman Kenneth believes her to be?

Thus begins a trilogy of absorbing stories, interconnected by fascinating characters and united by theme. Long after readers finish the book, they may find themselves reflecting on the questions Vanessa Hoffman asks about how we lead our lives.

Are our important life decisions the product of how we were raised by our parents? Or are they more heavily influenced by the instinct to survive? And once we make unethical choices, do we rationalize them and ignore any feelings of guilt? Ultimately, will we pay for our bad decisions, or will we skate through life, able to ignore the damage done to others?

The people who populate Hoffman’s novel are neither wholly good nor wholly bad; but are merely victims of life’s vagaries. They are ordinary people, innocent, vulnerable victims, the self-absorbed and privileged, Irish Mafia bosses, and criminals in league with Jihadists. They have—in some cases—lucked out by an accident of birth, but in other cases, had to struggle to overcome daunting obstacles. All have made questionable, life-altering choices.

Time and again, Ms. Hoffman draws a picture of a person who, had circumstances been different, might have made different decisions. In each case, Ms. Hoffman asks the question; will they suffer the consequences of their actions? Some readers may find Hoffman’s tone occasionally a tad preachy. However, the intriguing characters and the interwoven stories of suspense and political intrigue will remain with readers long after they finish the book. "Treasure: A Trilogy" raises important questions about the ways in which we live our lives. An engrossing and fascinating novel!

Awesome, cool book. There's a lot of action with characters that you hear about everyday on the news. It is a true look into life and its morals and ideals. I wish I could have been in the story to take-down "Ty". He was really scum. I give the story a thumbs up. J.C.
