In one fleeting moment, anything—and anyone—can change…

Real estate agent Julie Ferris is enjoying a day at the beach with her sister Laura when a strange, almost undetectable charge fills the air. Then, under the hot Malibu sun, time stops altogether.

Neither sister can explain their "lost day"—nor the blinding headaches and horrific nightmares that follow—but Julie chalks it up to the stress she's been under since her boss's son took over Donovan Real Estate.

Patrick Donovan would be a real catch if not for his notorious playboy lifestyle and matching attitude. But when a cocaine-fueled heart attack nearly kills him, Patrick makes an astonishingly fast—and peculiar—recovery. Julie barely recognizes the newly sober Patrick as the same man she once struggled to resist. Maybe it's the strange beach experience fueling her paranoia, but she can't help sensing something just isn't…right.

As Julie's feelings for Patrick intensify, she's about to discover how that day at the beach links her newfound happiness with her wildest suspicions….

From Booklist
Martin’s sci-fi romance portrays aliens as the classic small beings with large bald heads, pointed chins, and extremely large eyes, a look not all that well suited for a romantic hero. But Martin has him assume the body of dissipated Patrick Donovan, a gorgeous real estate broker who, after throwing his life away on drugs, drink, and bimbos, has a heart attack. Julie Ferris, an ambitious real estate agent who has avoided entanglement with Patrick for eight years, is amazed to see him change as he recovers, gives up his vices, and becomes conscientious. But what to do about her sister, Laura, who has become fearful and paranoid, believing that she has been abducted and examined by aliens? Although this doesn’t totally succeed as a romance, Martin is a terrific storyteller, and the world of alien abductees is fascinating. This tale will please fans of Stephenie Meyer’s The Host (2008). --Diana Tixier Herald

Aliens: Bring back Kat Martin!
By Rabid Reader
I almost never give but one or 2 stars.
But...this was the worst Kat Martin book I've ever read. Far below her usual standards, and it all has to do with her subject matter.

Her writing is fine, as always, but the story and characters are just awful and without a solid story to hang a plot on, or decent characters to develop, the book fails.

This was an attempt to meld Romance and Science Fiction.
It's been tried before (starting in the 1970's) with fairly dismal and surprisingly similar results each time. Science fiction--if it's going to work for the reader--requires story and plot to rest squarely on "future science" or speculation. When the story instead rests on romance, the science fiction elements just don't ring true. They become cartoonish and "space opera". Adding an element of psychological mystery/thriller to the story in this case was unable to rescue the book.

So, I would like the Aliens to please bring back the old Kat Martin and let her write her usual excellent romances.

Season of Strangers
By mnix
Julie and Laura Ferris are sisters who have no one left but themselves. Julie is a Realtor in Beverly Hills, working for a family-owned business that is being slowly run into the ground by Patrick, the playboy son of the owner. Patrick has always wanted Julie, but she has refused him for eight years, unwilling to be just another one of his women.

One day, the two sisters are enjoying the beach, and the next, things are different. Laura begins acting strange and Julie gets debilitating headaches. Shortly thereafter, Patrick suffers a heart attack, but recovers more quickly than can be imagined.

As Patrick seems to be renouncing his old ways, Julie finds herself drawn to this new, better man. But her sister needs her now more than ever, as she insists she was abducted by aliens that day on the beach.

I admit, I was not expecting the aliens. But Ms. Martin wove in quite a bit of knowledge about space travel with commonly accepted alien lore (Area 51, Roswell, etc.). But the stellar part of Season of Strangers was Patrick. Patrick's changes come about as a result of an alien named Val merging with the spirit of the old Patrick. Watching Val learn about becoming human, while integrating the best parts of Patrick's life, was fascinating and well-done. Best of all was watching him fall in love, a concept that didn't exist on his planet. While the concept of alien abduction was different, the story of personal growth and love was exceptional.

worked for me
By RomReader
Upscale residential realtor has doubts about how permanent the sudden & drastic character changes in alcohol- & drug-abusing & notorious playboy Hero are. She finds it even harder to believe that carefree Hero whom she's worked with for 8 years is now doggedly pursuing her for a serious & monogamous commitment. These changes in Hero are occurring at the same time that her younger sister is troubled by strange memories & happenings. The truth is Hero is really an alien scientist from another planet who's sent to earth to investigate why heroine responded differently to their probing compared to her sister & other humans they've researched on. Hero invaded the body of the man heroine works with right after he died of a heart attack & fused his being with the memories & sensations of that man. His human form allows him to experience what it's like to be a human being complete with human emotions & needs. So his fascination with heroine translated itself into physical desire & a mix of emotions foreign to him. Soon Hero begins to understand how emotions play a key role in humans as he falls in love with heroine & experience regret & pain. How will heroine react when she finds out Hero's real identity?

I'm not a fan of science-fiction or paranormal romance but Martin made this book interesting. It was romance-focused & the sci-fi stuff was easy to follow. I had doubts about how Martin was going to pull of a romance with an alien & heroine but she made it work. I liked how Hero was made to experience humanity & make choices based on that. He basically became the good that the man whose body he invaded could've become if he chose a better path than drugs/alcohol/& casual sex. I liked how heroine deciphered who it was she was actually in love with & stuck with it once she figured it out. Good emotional involvement. There were a few poignant moments especially when Hero's time to leave earth was approaching. The secondary characters & their concern about alien abduction was interesting but I'm glad it was peripheral. Sexual chemistry & sex scenes were sensual & touching.

Recommended.

Loved Book 2
By April Burger
I picked up a copy of this second book in Robin Moyer's Journey Collection at a fabulous arts and crafts festival in Pinckney, Michigan called Art in the Park. The author is from the area and has had a booth the last several years. It's always a joy to talk with authors and a special thrill to get your book personalized.

In the first book Moyer tackled heavy issues of depression and suicide. These were tough topics I thought she handled with skill and grace. As we move into the second book she takes another step continuing the complex family tale and also introducing us to the world of transgender. Something that most of us know little of it is obvious that Moyer did a lot of research and I believe she did a wonderful job of showing the struggles and triumphs while hopefully educating us along the way.

While I enjoyed the first book, Journey to Jukai, Gathering is definitely my favorite. Moyer continued what I thought a daunting task in the first book and wove together the history and circumstances that connect her large cast of characters in a way that makes sense and allows the reader to keep them straight in their mind. She introduces new characters and allows us to get to know them and care for them like old friends. I am already eager to read the next book in this series and find out how life is treating them.

I loved both books
By Linda M. Lown
I was anxious to read "From a Gathering of Glass" after reading Robin Moyer's first book, "Journey to Jukai". I loved both books. In "Glass" Robin brings to us an issue that has been recently in the news. One that is still hard for many to understand and accept. I liked how she referred to the transgender characters as living in the wrong shell. It also showed us that we really have no idea who among us struggles with this issue. Hopefully the greatest message anyone reading this book will come away with is acceptance. Unless we are dealing with this ourselves we can't understand the heartache and judgement of so many. I also loved Robin's message that no matter what life throws at us we can overcome and be great! The descriptions of the glass and other art in this book brought vivid images into my mind. I could picture the beauty. I truly hope anyone struggling with these issues will stop and think of how their lives or death can impact so many others around them. The more we know that there is magic in the world beyond the struggles and that we are truly one, the better we will all be. Thank you Robin for writing a beautiful story of hope and acceptance.

So glad I didn't have to wait for the second one
By Deb
I got both of Robin's books at the same time. So glad I didn't have to wait for the second one. I loved them both. I am not as eloquent as some of the reviewers here, but I know a good book when I read it. A good book to me makes me feel sad when I reach the end.... I feel sad. I can't wait for the third one!!! :)

GET YOUR LIFE HUNNY!
By Chanel Heckstall
When I first came across “By Design,” I was very skeptical as to how different it would be from any other self-help book on the market. I already felt like I had claimed and owned my QUEENDOM. With my reservations and all, I decided to purchase the book. Upon reading the first few pages, I was captivated by Lisa’s personal story of her trial and tribulations with a man by the name of Rick. I thought that was going to be the REAL deal but then after that it got….REALLY REAL. As I continued to read, I came across the passage of, “We lose touch with our whimsical, outrageous dreams of being that ULTMATE WOMAN. Without even realizing it, we sign a “normal contract.” Man did that hit me like a ton of bricks. In that moment, I realized I had been living out my “normal contract” terms and I was excited to read on, to really figure out myself, and truly CLAIM & OWN MY QUEENDOM. Through personal experiences and exercises, Lisa really dives into the issues woman face from appearance, to attitude, right down to cleaning house (literally). She keeps you engaged and constantly questioning yourself in a life changing manner for the better. This book is definitely one you will want to have on deck in your personal library.

I was always the girl that would go to the book club meeting only reading part of the book or none of it unless the book was really good and was able to grab my attention. I bought the book "By Design" at the book release party and read it the next day within 2 hours. It grabbed and held my attention because both the situations and the advice is REAL! Half the time, we as women, know what we need to do to keep our self-esteem high or reach our goals in life but just like church gives you a boost and a friendly reflection of where you are in life, this book does the same. It is a quick informative read. You will feel like you have a confidential mentor to hold your hand and guide you through the various situations that life throws at you. By Design, helps you to be the best you. This book was authentic, inspiring and fun to read. It is a must buy!!

Delightful and Inspiring
By Pen Name
I found this book a delightful and inspiring read. I would characterize it as motivational and honest. I really enjoyed the physical and mental exercises that are mentioned in the book - they're definitely essential to a woman's queendom. I feel like Lisa wrote from a genuine place of reflection and used her experiences and wisdom to share the lessons and journey with us in her book. One of many things that I found helpful in this book was "It's the energy that you put out in the world, so it's only natural that it comes back to you. However, you'll also begin to notice that now because you have a focused mind and an unapologetic work ethic, you will become turned off when the dreams of another person proves to be all talk an no action." - story line of my last relationship lol

Arty, Crafty, Nasty, by Melanie Zuben

"Arty, Crafty, Nasty" - is an honest, often hilarious and sometimes painful journey, a truly absorbing account of personal transformation, starting from Communist Hungary in the 1970's. Apart from her passionate love affairs and migrant issues, the author gives the reader a clear insight into the workings of some religious sects, but most importantly, she exposes the forceful power of online hackers, who are desperate to silence those, whose political views are threatening to their own.

About the Author
In 2009, Melanie Zuben made a lifestyle changing decision by quitting her stressful job at a Melbourne art gallery. She had two choices left: either end up a kamikaze alcoholic on her way to total self-destruction or re-invent herself and follow her dreams, come what may. One sunny morning, she had found herself suddenly FREE to paint her long overdue masterpieces and FREE to devote her time to her other passion: writing. She's the author of: The Gresham Symphony, married and lives in Melbourne, Australia.

Wow! Punchy! Descriptive! Can't wait to read the rest.
By Sue
I have just read the first 10 pages. Melanie has a gift at re-creating situations and characters. Her way of expressing herself, is colourful, to say the least. I find it an insightful introduction to the world of art dealers and the associated pressures that we outsiders do not see or realize.

I hope she will continue to write. I can't wait to finish the rest of the book.

Good read. I liked that it was an emotional ...
By James D. Quiggle
Good read. I liked that it was an emotional and spiritual biography, not just a series of life-events. Her take on many things is sensibly funny, and at times thoughtfully provoking. I appreciated both the imaginative pragmatism and apparent satire when she formed her "BBC" (Beautiful Bitches Club) to survive in the world of fashion retail, and I both hurt for her and laughed with her in the tale of a restaurant partnership in full tailspin to disaster. Other stories of spiritual journeys, political activism and opposing hackers were equally engaging. The only reason not rated at five stars is my life-time membership in the grammar police; fellow-members will find the grammar alternately amusing and irritating, but should know the book is well worth the reading. I also enjoyed the photos.

A fasinating look at a immigrant coming to Australia
By BernardZ
I found the book extremely absorbing. Unlike many immigrants from Western Countries, immigrants from Eastern Europe years ago could not go back. If they felt they were trapped, there was little they could do. It has some great characters and some brilliant scenes.

Samuel Wedge: Memoir of Necropolis, by Kevin D. Annett

Like Salman Rushdie's "Joseph Anton" Kevin Annett's novel, through the scope and freedom of fiction, allows him to describe the trials of a man who seeks to oppose and bring to justice people in high places who are protected by the government, the justice system, and the popular media. The action ranges from Vancouver Island to Central Florida and spans some thirty years of the protagonist's life. It is a human tragedy written with humor and compassion. It is strictly for a mature and serious readership of all ages.

About the Author
Reverend Kevin D. Annett, BA, MA, MDiv, has lectured widely in Europe and America and has been a community worker, ordained minister, writer, filmmaker, and broadcaster. In 1992, as pastor in Port Alberni, British Columbia, he discovered a history of atrocity suggesting genocide in his church's residential school that had taken place for more than a century. Such had been the case in 140 such "schools" across Canada, which have been run by the major churches. Refusing to remain silent, he was discharged by his church and defrocked. For more than twenty years, he has advocated and worked internationally toward justice for indigenous people, children and other victims of Church and State. In 2015, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace prize. Samuel Wedge is an autobiographical novel based on his story. Kevin Annett has produced and directed Unrepentant, an internationally award-winning feature-length film and has produced three nonfiction books, one of which, Love and Death in the Valley, was published by AuthorHouse in 2002 and is still selling twelve years later. He is a co-founder of the International Tribunal into Crimes of Church and State.

The book; the read; the man
By Angelyn Ray
THE BOOK: It feels good in the hands. Comfortable choice of font, point, line spacing, paper. From that standpoint, a pleasure to read.

THE READ: In a word, excruciating. Annett is an accomplished writer and a natural master of words. It's advisable to undertake the read when you can go into your own depths, whatever that takes. It will drag you through the sediment of your own basest impulses, inspire you to the rawest honesty a human heart can realize, and then dare you to bridge the great divide between, with no devices and no tools, equipped only with the laser burn of that searing honesty.

THE MAN: Galileo...Snowden...Socrates. Annett is a teacher among us from whom we could learn how to save the world (isn't that what we all want to do, yes, no?). In the end, he calls himself a witness. Not only has he seen and heard, he has told what he has seen and heard. It is that witness, which he brazenly puts forth in this novel, which will do its part to turn the tides we all ride in these times. A story not included in "Samuel Wedge" is an exorcism he once performed on the Vatican - the sort of "brazenness" to which I refer. The fact that he persists in the telling, using one medium after another, is a modern-day marvel, and I, for one, am grateful.

Samuel Wedge: Memoir of Necropolis

Samuel Wedge: Memoir of Necropolis
On The Thin Edge of Honor and Destruction
Kevin Annett’s new novel, Samuel Wedge (AuthorHouse, Bloomington, Indiana, $19.95) is a slowly evolving chronicle of evil told by an old man, trying but failing to escape from a terrible secret. More sober than Joyce Cary’s larcenous but charming Gulley Jimson, but devastated less by the honor of struggle than Hemingway’s Old Man, Santiago, Wedge vacillates between his Florida sanctuary and his former Davidian confrontation, his combat avec ses defenseurs, with overpowering adversaries as a former young pastor in a remote logging town on Vancouver Island.

In his former bucolic life, he discovers and reveals the terrible history of Canada’s religious colonialism and thinly masked murder. In return he is pilloried, ostracized and marginalized by church and state, enduring an ideological combat avec ses defenseurs. Ultimately, sadder, wiser, but not totally bereft of hubris, he is left to confront his own private leviathan in Florida’s elephantine graveyard.

But just as Wedge’s isolated horror story expands and becomes a sickening metaphor for universal evil imbedded in the seats of the mighty, for the American reader, the comfortable contemplation of an Erehwon world to the North whose deadly simplicity gradually evokes the understanding that ubiquitous evil walks among us all. In the councils of church and state, Wedge discovers, and beyond – in the very boardrooms, the editorial offices and the judicial chambers of those who lever today’s world – there is murderous injustice in the form of tiny crucifixions that routinely occur, never talked about, much less mentioned, in our carefully manicured society and our narrowly censored media. And the thin edge of lonely heroism is all that can save us from destruction.
Like Santiago more than Gulley Jimson, Samuel Wedge – as simply as a little child – serves to lead us.

From the Author
Grace to Grow is just a beginning of my sharing all the wonderful treasures that the Lord has bestowed on me. As I wrote this book I prayed with all my heart over each and every page.

The book is inspirational vs instructional and has less sharing than I would like of personal testimonies. However; Be it known the next book will have more depth, more testimonies and more personal sharing. I can promise you this; AS you step out in Faith and go into a covenant with the Lord that you want to learn "FROM HIM" and receive more of him; he will bless you and strengthen you in your relationship with him far beyond your wildest dreams.

As you let Go of "what you think you know" you will find yourself closer to Him than you had ever imagined. What are you waiting for? Let's Grow!

About the Author
Laura Grace is the Author of Grace to the Rescue and Grace to Grow. She is currently working on her third full size book to be published in 2015 with Tate Publishing. Laura has been a property manager, therapeutic youth mentor, worship leader, small group leader and has assisted and helped in many areas in serving the body of Christ: especially in her prayers!

Saved and Born Again in 1987, Laura's dynamic and versatile style of ministry has the dynamic of being "down to earth and real" while very charismatic at the same time.

Laura has fellowshipped with, shared with, prayed with and ministered to many types of people from many types of churches through the years; most of which had some sort of story to tell about feeling misunderstood in churches.

She has always had a heart to reconcile believers to the Lord and to fellowship with each other: and while recognizing the very real pain that sometimes goes with the territory in church settings she encourages believers everywhere to "Grow in Grace" and the knowledge of God so they can be more effective in growing personally and eventually a healthier fellowship with others in and out of church.

injustices and the like AND you are really needing to know every day
By Laura Grace
Yes, I really am giving my own book 5 stars! And I am giving myself 5 stars for doing what I have said in this book and so much more. Hey; when you have come out of a broken torn apart marriage, suffered poverty, food bank lines, lack, government housing, church hurts, broken dreams, injustices and the like AND you are really needing to know every day, every night every hour that even when the pastor is not there to help GOD IS and I mean you want to KNOW it like it's etched into your very soul! This is where I was at when I took that song "Holy Fire burn away' whatever is not of you very literally. It did not matter to me how many church services I'd attended how many scriptures I knew or how many people I had witnessed to: I HAD TO KNOW What God was saying to me in his word by His Spirit. So I am testifying yes this book is true and good and I have prayed over it. At the very least I know my prayers for you to grow will touch your life even as you open it's pages. Laura Grace

There was no less-qualified cook in the town of Peach Leaf, Texas—okay, possibly the whole world—than Lucy Monroe, and she would be the first to admit it.

So then, to Lucy, given the way things had been going lately, it wasn't really all that surprising that she was responsible for preparing lunch for the hungry kids on a field trip, who now crowded the Lone-star Observatory's small café. Thirty or so second graders, and their already-worn-out teachers and parent-chaperones, who must be standing staring at the still-swinging kitchen door, thinly veiled impatience clouding their features as they wondered what on earth was keeping their solo waitress. Not that Lucy was much of a server, either, for that matter. Lord help her, Lucy needed a break.

Or a miracle.

She was short on both.

Full order pad in hand, she grabbed an apron, tying it quickly over her lemon-colored pencil skirt and white button-down shirt. Lucy rushed to the prep table to start slicing cheese and bread for sandwiches, and to check on the caramel apple pies she'd had the foresight to put in the oven earlier between her regular duties. The pie recipe was her grandma's—an old favorite—and the only thing she really knew how to get right in the kitchen.

Unlike Nana, Lucy was as out of her element in a kitchen as a hog in a chicken coop, which was exactly why she'd hired the best chef she could find to handle the observatory's little café. A very skilled, highly trained, seemingly intelligent chef, who, at that very moment, was on a plane to Las Vegas with the fiancée he'd met only a week ago.

Damn that Axel.

Lucy pulled out a knife and began slicing a loaf from the day before, pushing the utensil through the soft bread perhaps a little harder than was necessary.

Surely he could have given more than a day's notice before he skipped town. But then, Axel had probably made his rash decision with something other than his brain. He'd called and woken Lucy late the evening before to give his resignation. She'd bitten her tongue to prevent her true thoughts from escaping her mouth when Axel had said he would be sorry to cut out on her on such short notice, except for the fact he'd found the love of his life and therefore was the happiest man on the planet and didn't have a sorry bone in his body.

Lucy had more than enough sorry bones for the both of them. He'd left her high and dry for a red-eye to Vegas, and she hadn't had a single second to hire someone to take his place. Her regular tasks as the observatory's manager would have to wait. Finding a suitable new chef was first on her agenda—that is, after she'd appeased the ravenous throng waiting on the other side of the kitchen wall.

Her thoughts were interrupted when the door swung open and her coworker and best friend, Tessa McAdams, burst in, quickly closing the door behind her as she stared wide-eyed at Lucy.

"There's an angry mob out there, Lu," Tessa said, turning back to the door and standing on tiptoes to stare out the small round window. She ducked back down, fast. "They're closing in. I think they might come in after us if you don't get some grub in their bellies soon."

"Damn that Axel," Lucy said, out loud this time. She lowered the bread knife into the loaf once more and continued to saw, but when she looked up again a strange expression crossed Tessa's face, causing Lucy to pause midslice. Tessa crossed her arms and her lips formed a straight line, her dark eyes sparkling with mischief, nose wrinkling up like a rabbit in the same way she'd had since they were kids, whenever Tessa was on the verge of revealing a secret or in the process of calculating a naughty plan.

"Whatever it is, out with it. Now," Lucy demanded, sparing only a second to toss a serious look at her friend before getting back to work.

"Tell me straight, Lu. I know it's been a while since you had a decent date, but starting fires just to get a hot firefighter out here is no way to go about catching a man."

For a second, Lucy had no clue what Tessa was talking about, but then the unmistakable scent of scorched flour and butter hit her nostrils with full force.

"Oh my gosh, Tess!" Lucy said, tossing aside the bread and knife and making her way to the stacked ovens on the other side of the kitchen, as if her life depended on it. The way things were going, it might indeed. "My pies!"

For a second she froze, unable to do more than stand still, shocked, afraid to open the oven and face the inevitable pastry carnage. Thankfully, adrenaline took over.

Her previous impishness wiped away, Tessa rushed over to join her friend. Lucy tossed a set of oven mitts at her. "Here, put these on," Lucy said, cloaking her own hands in another pair. "You pull out the rack and I'll grab the pies. We might be able to rescue the ones on the top shelf if we're quick."

Tessa took the mitts and followed Lucy's instructions, but Lucy saw doubt crease her forehead as she pulled out pie after pie, the crust of each more burned than the one before. "Lu," Tessa said, shaking her head in defeat, "I know less about cooking than you—and that's saying something—and I hate to mention it, but… I really don't think these are salvageable."

The last pie retrieved from the oven of doom, Lucy pulled her hands out of the mitts and grabbed the bread knife. She began cutting off the charred pieces of crust and singed chunks of her special oatmeal-pecan topping, ignoring Tessa's words. She had to save the pies. Otherwise, there would only be plain sandwiches to serve her guests, and there was no way she could let all those kids and their parents and teachers return to their schools in Austin, thinking that the Lonestar Café had such poor service. The place was in enough financial trouble already.

The Lonestar Observatory had much higher standards in serving guests. In particular, its café was known for delicious, home-cooked Southern comfort food, just the way it had been when Lucy's dad was in charge of everything. He had ensured that everything in the facility was top-notch, from providing the latest stargazing equipment available, to seeing that the café served only the best cuisine. Her dad had received his PhD in astronomy with high recommendations and, instead of becoming a professor as all of his instructors expected, he, along with her mom, had accepted the local university's offer to head the small observatory, just a few months before Lucy was born.

Her dad had died the day after her twenty-fifth birthday. Lucy convinced the university to let her take over managing the observatory, on the condition that she hired a properly credentialed expert in the field to stand in as official director. Despite not finishing formal training in astronomy, Lucy knew the observatory better than any of the scientists interviewed for her father's job before the university admitted she was best for the position. She'd learned everything she needed to know from her dad, first toddling along as he checked the telescopes each day, all the way through high school and her first semesters of college, when she'd begun her own research projects to advance the field. And the director, sweet Dr. Blake, who looked and behaved more like Santa Claus than a scientist—which described the rest of the observatory's employees—respected Lucy enough to let her have her way in running the place. It wasn't the same as being a true scientist, but it would have to do. She'd wanted to be an astronomer since she was a little girl, learning constellations and galaxies at her father's side, and if she had a spare second, she might admit that she regretted not being able to finish school.

But Lucy didn't have time for regrets.

Everything aside, more than her job and her life and the means by which she was able to take care of her niece, Shiloh, the Lonestar was Lucy's home. It was where she'd been raised and where she'd learned to look up when things in her own world weren't going well. It was the only place on the planet where she felt whole and centered; she would do anything to keep it running like a well-oiled machine, even when funding was low or when struggles with Shi-loh tested her patience. Or when love-struck chefs quit at the last minute.

So this was about more than burned pies.

It was about letting down her dad—the only man she'd ever been able to trust.

Tessa had come to her side and was attempting to pry the knife out of Lucy's hands. Finally, warm tears pooling behind her eyes, Lucy let her friend take the utensil as she sank to the floor, settling her face in her hands. "Dad would be so disappointed if he saw what a disaster this is," Lucy said as she fought against the tears that threatened to escape. "He would never have let this kind of thing happen to this place." She raised her head and peered at Tessa through her bangs, which stuck out all over and clung to her glasses, frizzy and wild from the chaos of the past half hour.

"Shhh," Tessa soothed, setting down the knife and crouching beside her friend. She brushed aside Lucy's frazzled hair. "You know that's not true, hon. You're just having a rough time lately, and you're stressed. Your daddy loved you more than he loved the stars. And that's saying something." Tessa lifted Lucy's chin with her finger and stared into Lucy's eyes, a mischievous smirk behind her own. "But one thing I do know—he would not have let you set foot in this kitchen without supervision, not even to make a few pies. That's for damn sure." Tessa smiled and Lucy felt her chest relax, ever so slightly. She reached up and wiped at her eyes, then made a fist and softly brushed Tessa's chin in a mock punch. Tessa laughed and the melodious sound of it was almost enough to coax a smile out of Lucy.

Almost—but not quite.

She'd made such a mess of things today. And, even though her best friend had a way of making her feel better, the world still awaited her, and something had to be done about the hungry crowd waiting outside the door. And there were afternoon tours scheduled back-to-back, quarterly tax forms to review and Shiloh to meet at the bus stop. Lucy closed her eyes and sighed, concentrating all her effort on taking one deep breath after the other. This wasn't the first time she'd had more responsibility than any one person could possibly handle, and it was highly unlikely that it would be the last. She would just have to buck up, make the sandwiches and tackle the rest later, then find some way to deal with the fact that, for today, her beloved place—her home—had poorer pickings than a fast-food joint.

Sam Haynes had bitten off more than he could chew. He'd assumed the drive to Peach Leaf would be a piece of cake after making the trip to Austin from Houston when his plane had landed that morning, but clearly he'd underestimated the distance. The Texas road stretched on forever and looked much the same the whole way, save for a few tiny towns along the route, and not a Starbucks in sight. Hills with clusters of trees here and there, but mostly dust, dust—and more dust. And real tumbleweeds, which Sam had only seen in his grandfather's beloved old black-and-white Westerns. It was true what they said—everything was bigger here—including, unfortunately, the highways.

Luckily, he'd seen the sign for Peach Leaf about a mile-and-a-half back, shining like an oasis in the desert, and there couldn't be that much farther left to go—he hoped. A native New Yorker, Sam wasn't used to driving this much, and he'd got to the point where he'd do just about anything this side of the law to get a decent meal and a bed for the night. And he'd die for a strong cup of coffee.

His journey had been long in more ways than one.

He'd received a phone call about his daughter's whereabouts from the PI he'd hired a few weeks prior, just when he'd been about ready to jump out of his skin from the wait. The guy seemed sure this time—he'd really found her. Sam had thought such a feat near impossible, given how little he had to go on, but the investigator had come with high recommendations from a friend mindful enough not to ask pressing questions, and sure enough, the guy had accomplished the task. After taking a few days off to process the news and make some plans, Sam had notified the chefs at the three restaurants he owned that he would be available only by email until further notice, and he'd booked a plane out of New York City, with a room waiting for him at The Frederick-son Bed-and-Breakfast in Peach Leaf.

Now here he was, in the middle of nowhere in West Texas, looking for a girl he'd never even met. A girl who, until fairly recently, he hadn't even known existed.

A few of his closest friends had pronounced Sam's plan crazy for picking up and leaving without any real explanation, but he knew enough to know that sometimes, the crazy thing was the right thing.

His heart swelled at the thought of seeing her for the first time. Would she look like him? Would she have Sam's brown eyes and hair? Or would she have Jennifer's green eyes and wavy, reddish hair, with freckles dotting a button nose? Would she have his love of books and music, or would she be more like her mysterious mother, whom Sam had barely known?

It was only meant to be a one-night stand—no strings attached. Jennifer had been hesitant to even offer up her first name, though Sam insisted. He'd been young, a frat boy in college, and she was just another coed notch on his bedpost before he'd wised-up and straightened out his life. When he'd got the call from Jennifer a month ago, saying she was sorry, but she just had to tell him something she'd been keeping to herself for years, he'd been expecting anything but the news she gave him. Before she'd spoken the words that forever changed his life in an instant, he had thought that maybe she needed help, or maybe she just wanted to get together for a drink after all those years—hell, maybe she needed money. Anything was possible. But instead, the strawberry-haired girl from a reckless one-night stand whose last name he'd never known gave him the most lifealtering news a man could hear.

They had a daughter.

He had a daughter.

Good story
By S. Frank
Good story. Sam was stunned to hear from a college one night stand that she had given birth to his daughter. He is determined to find her and be part of her life. He finds her living with her aunt and has to decide the best way to proceed. Lucy has devoted her life to her niece and the observatory. She doesn't know why Sam is in Peach Leaf, but he's come to her rescue with the observatory and he and Shiloh have bonded, so she'll accept his presence for now.

Sam doesn't want to tell them who he is until he's gotten a chance to know them. As he arrives in the middle of a crisis at the observatory's restaurant, it's the perfect way for him to slip into their lives. Meeting Shiloh blows him away. He feels an immediate connection with Shiloh and wants to do everything he can for her. He's attracted to Lucy right away, but tries to resist as it would only complicate things further. He's drawn to the passion she has for her work and the passion he sees under the surface in the woman. He soon realizes that he's falling for her, and that revealing his connection to Shiloh could jeopardize the relationship growing between them.

Lucy is more comfortable amid the stars than around men. She's had a couple of relationships that haven't worked out and has decided that men are something she doesn't need in her life. Her life is full enough with her work and her niece. She's wary of Sam when he first arrives, feeling that it's too good to be true when he's exactly what she needs at the cafe and he takes to Shiloh. She's attracted to him, but worries about what would happen if she gives in to it. The temptation grows as she begins to trust him and open up to him about her past and fears and dreams. Discovering his deception makes her doubt herself again when it comes to relationships.

I really liked Sam's determination to be part of Shiloh's life. He shows an amazing amount of sensitivity to her and her emotions. I also liked the way that he loved Lucy just the way she was, even when he didn't understand what she was talking about. I really liked that he was determined to fight for her love. Lucy's wariness was understandable, but it really worked against her with Sam. I did like the way she was able to see the truth of her feelings at the end, and gathered the courage to talk about them. Though they declared their love early in their relationship, I loved the way the epilogue showed that they took the time to really get to know each other.

Heart touching storyline, engaging characters and a sweet romance
By Hope This Helps
Rating: 4.0 stars. _PG sexual content -- none graphic
Note: Stands alone read.

GOOD READ. Well written, compelling storyline, appealing characters, good supporting cast, strong family theme, and a sweet romance with a hero and heroine who are in touch with their values and life's choices. HOWEVER, this storyline is just slightly uncomfortable; the hero starts a sexual relationship with a vulnerable woman who is caring for her equally vulnerable pre-teen niece while hiding his true identity and intentions.

THE STORY revolves around smart, focused, Observatory Manager, Lucy Monroe, her disabled niece, Shiloh, and restaurateur, master chef, and Shiloh's father, Sam Haynes. Years earlier, Lucy's bipolar sister, Jennifer, gives birth to Sam's child and signs over custody to Lucy without telling Sam he is a father. As the story unfolds, Jennifer finally tells Sam the truth and he tracks Shiloh and Lucy down. Not wishing to charge in, he meets and spend time with them without revealing his true relationship. He is quickly drawn to Lucy's dedication to Shiloh and her work at the Observatory, as well as Shiloh's strength and spunk. However, things become complicated when Jennifer shows up and he has not yet revealed his connection to Shiloh.

OVERALL, a heart touching storyline with endearing characters. A good read.

You may also enjoy the complex characters and storytelling of N. Bruhns, A. Stuart, and E. Palfrey. For sweet, funny, heart touching romances with great descriptive imagery, try Susan Fox or Cara Colter.

Surprise! It's a Girl!
By whitfield25
Lucy is one of the most selfless characters I've read about in a long time. She gave up her dreams to study astronomy to raise her niece, Shiloh, after Jennifer, Lucy's mentally unstable sister, literally left the baby on her doorstep. Now 12 years later, Jennifer finally tells Sam he has a daughter. After that the story moved way too quickly. Sam and Lucy fell in love in one week???? Also, Sam should have been honest about who he really was. Other than that I liked the story. I received this book, free, in a Goodread's First Read's Giveaway. Thank you.
